History of HubPages
A wise man once said, "You can't know where you're going unless you know where you've been." This is definitely true when it comes to finding out exactly what HubPages is, so take a quick read below and get ready for a little HubPages History 101.
The best place to write on the web
As you'll soon realize in this section, there have been several changes since the Berkeley, CA garage that HubPages was first started in 2006. But even with all the changes, there's at least one thing that's remained constant - our goal of being the best place for you to write online. I know, I know, that seems like a pretty big goal, but it's something that we're always striving for. But, before we can let you know about what we have planned for the future, we should first probably tell you how we got started in the first place!
The beginning of HubPages
In August of 2006 HubPages was launched literally off of a garage floor in Berkeley, CA by 3 guys who love tech, business and most of all, coffee. In no particular order their names are Paul Edmondson, Paul Deeds and Jay Reitz. This trio had plenty of SEO, business, engineering and technology expertise and it was their new goal of creating not only the best place to write online, but the best place to get paid to write online.
They would do this by utilizing the knowledge that they had gained in their past adventures working together including MongoMusic, a predictive, searchable music platform that was later acquired by Microsoft in 2000. After the acquisition, they continued to work at Microsoft until they decided to launch their own startup together. This small but powerful team then came up with the initial idea for what you now know as HubPages.
For an even better understanding of how HubPages was first created, check out Paul Edmondson's Hubs called The Story of HubPages (up until the move to San Francisco) and The Story of HubPages Part 2 (after the move to the San Francisco Office).
The current state of HubPages
A lot has happened since HubPages' first days in Berkeley. For one, with 13+ million unique visitors a month, HubPages is now one of the most trafficked sites on the web today. This is a true testament to the hard work, vision and goals that have been carried out by the initial team at HubPages, as well as the current team that keeps HubPages running on a daily basis.
Speaking of new team members, HubPages has grown over the past couple of years, but not by much. Paul Deeds is still involved on a day-to-day basis as the general manager of HubPages, but Paul Edmondson and Jay Reitz now spend most of their time on YieldBuild, which is used to optimize ads on HubPages and is now a stand-alone product. New additions to the HubPages team include Maddie Ruud (community manager/spam destroyer), Larry Freeman (engineer/random thought creator), Fawntia Fowler (engineer/math genius), Sumit Mehra (engineer/idea guy) and Ryan Hupfer (communicator of awesomeness!/marketing guy). Although the core team has changed, the focus for HubPages continues to be the same: to create the best place for people to write online. If you'd like a first-person account of what a visit to our office in San Francisco is like, be sure to check out this Hub that was written by a traveling Hubber who stopped by one day for lunch.
