10 Habits for a Happy Life

Build character traits for Happiness

You may think that once you get past a certain age in life, nothing can change the way you've lived your life. Nothing can be further from the truth if you want to live a very long life. Age is just a number and what we all should concern ourselves with is our own unique identity, and what we want for a fruitful and happy existence everyday of our life, Here are 10 ways to help you get there. If you already possess them then more power to you.

1. Have a love of learning - Don't stop learning after you have finished your education.Constantly try to acquire new skills; such as wrting on HubPages or other blogs. Constantly try to satisfy your curiosity, and build on your existing knowledge. Have you ever wanted to learn French? Sign up for a language class and plan a trip overseas to put your new skill to use.

2. Let your creativity shine - Let your hair hang down, and go and take an art or dance class. Do it with the attitude of having fun, and don't judge yourself. You will be so satisfied when you do this; it may just become contagious.

3. Have Humility and Modesty - Be able to recognize your abilities and achievements and also appreciate others achievements. Try writing down the names of 3 or 4 friends or associates that you look up to, and lists the traits that you most admire from them. Put a check besides those traits you don't have, and work on achieving that trait.

4. Have Humor in your Life - Learn to laugh and do it alot. Watch a funny movie or sitcom. Go out with friends to a local comedy club. If you do something stupid; laugh at yourself instead of getting mad, and throwing or breaking something you"ll regret later.

5. Be Persistent and Strong - If you face any type of obstacle in life like loosing weight, think about what may not have worked last time, and change it by having a better plan. People who take responsibility for their success and failures are more likely to succeed in achieving their goals.

6. Have some Gratitude - Be grateful and thankful. All of us should count our blessings because somewhere in this world, there are those less fortunate than we are; especially the children of the world. Reflect each day by being thankful for what you do have; especially family, and not material possessions.

7. Learn how to forgive - Don't hold on to hurt and anger. If the event that caused you anger is getting the best of you, try writing a letter, and state your forgiveness to the person who was involved. Don't send the letter...the act of just writing the letter will help you start the healing process.

8. Appreciate Excellence and Beauty - Recognize the good things in life and appreciate them. Literally; "Stop and smell the roses or Wake up and smell the coffee". Allocate some "you" time, and take a walk to the park or visit an art gallery or science museum. The choices are yours for the taking.

9. Spirituality is a good thing - You don't have to be a devout church goer to possess a spiritual side. Try meditation for 10 to 15 minutes a day. When you first wake-up in the morning or just before bedtime, say a quite prayer or just quite contemplation allows you to go beyond yourself.

10. Show some Vitality - Get up and move, don't be slumping around. Physical activity increases you sense of vitality with activities such as a gym workout, a hike, or a bike ride through the park. Less vigorous activity like gardending, or painting on a canvass, also get the job done.

Humor and gratitude are two important qualities to have and which I enjoy; your list is one filled with wisdom. And... you just reminded me to get up and move around, feeling sluggish right now, so off to the treadmill I go. :)

fishskinfreak2008; You are right, I realize that life is not a bowl of cherries, but we should be thankful for being alive, and also treat those around us like we want to be treated.

# 1 have a love of learning.  you ask if you ever wanted to learn french.  Well I didn't but my father did.  After retirement he taught himself to speak french mainly through tapes and repetition.  He also went to France and knew enough French to carry on some conversation with the locals.  If you love something enough you can learn it.  My father had to go to work at a very young age so had to quit school in the 8th grade and today 10 years into retirement he is still learning up a storm!

Dottie1; Kudos to your father, that's just wonderful. There is such a wealth of information out there. I think it's fascinating. Thanks for sharing.

Shirley; The great part about having those traits is that they are not hard to achieve if you're not already there. Sometimes it's take a little time and effort, but the rewards are great.

Hello again dayzeebbee, I again appreciate your postitive remarks to one of my Hubs. You are a very nice person. Have a wonderful and happy life!

johnny yuma1 7 years ago

I have always done some of these things. A friend told me a few months ago that to have so many health problems I sure am a happy person. Well, why shouldn't I be? Having health problems is much better than the alternative. That would be no health at all, or death. I choose the problems and love life. I am probably the happiest person anyone will ever meet. I have days that I am not happy part of the day, but never a full day that way. And speak of staying young, I am 62 but really don't feel that old at all. Seldom do I think of myself as being old and hardly ever remember to ask for a senior citizens discount unless my wife reminds me too.

I love your hubs!

Hello Johnny, I would have to agree with you on everything you say. I am 58 and still am young at heart and try to stay happy so those around me can be happy also. I always count my blessings. Thanks for the comments.

johnny yuma1 7 years ago

Age is to a large degree how we feel about it. If we don't mind it doesn't matter so much as it does to the people that do mind.

Exactly Johnny yuma1. We should not let age control our actions and attitudes about how we live our lives. People should just be themselves and let the normal progression of life happen. One must not worry about becoming old and  equating that with  anticipating bad things happening with our health, bodies, and thought processes, etc. If that is what a person thinks, then it might very well happen.

Great hub laringo. I like the laugh at yourself part. I intend to adapt that attitude because I will find quite some situations like that. Yes, laughter is the best medicine. Thank you.

Thanks earnesthub, I think now more than ever is the time to apply the principles of this Hub. We all need to remain positive in  light of the situation of the world we live in and all the problems we must face.

I feel I have a right to be happy. We all should have happiness. When did misery become something we have to not only expect - but to accept?

Thanks for this pep talk!

laringo profile image

laringo 7 years ago from From Berkeley, California. Author

BKCreative.....thank you for your pointing out that we as a human race have learned to accept what we do not want or expect. Who said life is suppose to be this way? All we can do is try to keep above what we cannot control and grow in a positive way.

C. C. Riter 7 years ago

Oh waht a good hub this is. Well, I look up to you for one. You are a guiding light. I need to be more humorous but i refuse to learn French. I'm working on Scot Gaelic and I'd like to learn Cockney. LOL I also need to walk more, but it's been too nasty out and I spend too much time being creative. I do out and pick up dog poo, does that count?

When fine weather does come my way, I promise you won't see much of me 'cause Wee One's got a huge list of things I have to get done outside. Sheesh!

Thanks for a great inspiration. Laringo, but I really want your chicken fried recipe.

Great hub - I love number two. We're all so busy being consumers we forget that we all have the ability, in our own small way, to be creators. Being creative is a hugely underestimated source of human happiness - way more satisfying than consuming.

laringo profile image

laringo 7 years ago from From Berkeley, California. Author

Hi Karen, I agree with you on number two. I think if you are just stuck doing the same thing over and over, then you just don't grow to your full potential and to me that's just a waste of life and what you and it have to offer.
