Chronic GI Troubles Keep Workers Off the Job

TUESDAY, Nov. 7, 2007 (HealthDay News) -- People with some common functional gastrointestinal disorders lose the equivalent of at least one full day of work in every 40-hour workweek, a new U.S. study finds.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders, which are associated with impaired quality of life, are among the most common causes of workplace-related absenteeism. These conditions also play a role in "presenteeism" -- when people go to work but are less productive than normal.

For the study, patients filled out numerous questionnaires over one year. People with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), chronic constipation (CC) alone, or functional dyspepsia (FD) lost 10.3 hours of work per week, while those with gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) lost about 6.3 hours per week.

Patients with IBS-C, chronic constipation and functional dyspepsia (chronic or recurrent pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, including feeling full earlier than expected when eating, sometimes accompanied by bloating, belching, nausea or heartburn) also scored higher on a scale measuring impairment/productivity loss than GERD patients.

"This research demonstrates the significant economic impact of these common conditions," study author Dr. G. Richard Locke, of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, said in a prepared statement. He conducted the research along with co-investigators from drug maker Novartis Pharmaceuticals.

The findings were slated for presentation Monday at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting in Philadelphia.

Here’s something you should try implementing for chronic or casual constipation relief:

First some dos and don'ts:

• The diet taken during constipation must be easily digestible.

• Plenty of fruits, vegetables and salads

• Freshly cooked food, and chew food thoroughly.

• Eat only when hungry and maintain at least 4 hours between meals.

• Use spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric powder, fennel and asafetida as they make the food easy to digest.

• Whole grain bread and cereals

• Regular physical exercise is also important for maintaining proper bowel movements.

• Sleeping hours should be regulated and efforts should be made to have a sound sleep.

• Fried foods, beans, gas forming vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli and dried fruits should be avoided.

• Do not mix too many kinds of foods in one meal.

Next here are over 100 home remedies; many passed on over thousands of years: (so before spending your hard earned money on seductive packaging, why not try some of these? If they worked for our ancestors over thousands of years, why not today?)

NB: These natural ingredients are the same ones you’ll find on the labels of high priced health products.

Better than Zelnorm and not a drug. Works great for many I recommend it to. Source of this originates from a very prestigious gastroenterologist. Magic Pudding is what I call it. Mix 2 parts unprocessed wheat bran (must be UNprocessed -- available in the natural foods section of the supermarket), 2 parts unsweetened applesauce, 1 part prune juice. The mixture keeps a week in the refrigerator. Eat 1 to 2 tablespoons before bed followed by a glass of water. Keep it up daily, increasing up to 8 tablespoons until stools are soft (I eat about 1/4 cup every night).

Try Chamomile Tea with a lot of sugar. Also fresh, raw papaya and grapes.

Eating chapatti made of wheat (two parts) and roasted black gram powder (one part) along with their husk is also beneficial and is good constipation remedy.

To make good home remedy for constipation take 2 tablespoons of Blackstrap molasses before going to sleep.

Molasses are high in calories. It has a strong taste, though; you may want to add it to milk, fruit juice, or prune juice etc.

Walking 4-5 kms. After dinner is highly beneficial as it helps in the digestion of food.

Half cup cabbage juice taken twice-daily cures constipation.

Mango is a natural reliever of constipation.

Dip 10-12 dry grapes without seeds in milk and boil the milk. Drink the milk separately and chew the grapes. This is more beneficial when taken at night.

Dip Spiegel seeds 5-10 grams in 200 grams of warm milk. Add sugar and take this during night.

Chronic constipation can be cured with high intake of figs dipped in water and taken in the morning time.

Dates along with milk also relieve constipation.

Dip two teaspoonfuls of Spiegel seeds in water for 6 hours, add equal amount of sugar and take this with water at night.

Drinking water, which has been kept overnight in a copper vessel in the morning with empty stomach, will give immediate relief from constipation.

Mix 1/4 teaspoon of Epsom salt to 1/2 a glass of water and drink.

Mix 1/2 cup olive oil with 1/2 cup orange juice and drink.

Daily intake of guava with empty stomach in the morning is highly beneficial.

Take some fennel seeds and add them to a glass full of warm water. Drink this water each night before going to bed. Fennel has properties in curing digestive problems. The regular use of fennel will normalize the working of the digestive system and heal the constipation problems

Take 2-4 teaspoonfuls of castor oil also relieve constipation.

Carrot juice mixed with spinach juice gives immediate relief from constipation.

A teaspoon of linseed taken with water before each meal provides bulk and lubrication, thus curing constipation.

Mix the powder of one dry ginger (Zingiber officinale) with the powder of some senna leaves in equal proportions. Put these powders in a cup of lukewarm water. Drink this water while it is still a little warm every night. This will ensure proper passing of stools in the morning.

The juice of two oranges taken in the morning with empty stomach for 8-10 days relieves constipation.

A teaspoon of linseeds, swallowed with water before each meal, provides lubrication and is good natural remedy for constipation.

1-2 teaspoons of almond oil taken with milk at night for 3-4 days also relieves constipation.

Take almond oil with milk every night before going to sleep.

Mix 4 grams of triphala powder with 200 grams of warm water or milk.

Morpheme Triphala provides Natural Triphala extract in vegetable capsules. Charaka states that “by using this recipe continuously for one year, one can live for a hundred years, free from aging and diseases”

Prepare a mixture of equal quantities of carrot juice and spinach juice in a glass. Drink this glassful of juices at night before going to sleep.

Vajrasana is one of the yogasanas beneficial for curing constipation.

Drinking hot water with sour lime juice and half a teaspoon of salt is also an effective home remedy for constipation.

Rose petal jelly: Take 100 g of white rose petals and cut the base. Place one tablespoon lemon juice, two tablespoons orange juice, two tablespoons clear honey, 450g white cane sugar and 150 ml water in a stainless pan. Leave it till the sugar gets dissolved. Now add the rose petals and heat with continuous stirring till the petals appear to dissolve. Allow the mixture to cool and seal when it is cold. Intake of one teaspoon daily will enhance the bowel movement.

Peach blossom drink: One teaspoon of dried peach blossoms infused in a cup of boiling milk should be drunk twice daily for immediate relief from constipation.

Take Apple pectin, helps with constipation and brings fibers into the body.

Take folic acid. An insufficient intake of folic acid can lead to constipation.

To clean and heal the digestive system take Aloe Vera juice twice a day.

Ginger tea is a great home remedy for constipation. It helps start bowel movement.

Yerba mate in tea form is very helpful with constipation.

Eat lots of fruits, green vegetables cabbage, peas, carrots, garlic, sweet potatoes; all these are high in fiber.

Exercise often a simple stroll in the park can relieve constipation.

Eat a lot of plum's spread.

Constipation treatment:

Eat apples.

Drink carrot juice.

Eat 1/2 a cup of sunflower seeds everyday.

Drink every morning on an empty stomach, warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and half a lemon juice.

Blanch a teaspoon of thyme in a cup of warm water, add honey, and wait for 3 minutes then drink.

Eat potatoes daily to help with the constipation.

Saturate plums (or dates) with warm water before you go to bed; drink the water in the morning and eat the plums.

Take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar every morning (on an empty stomach) with a glass of water.

Mix 1/4 teaspoon of Epsom salt to 1/2 a glass of water and drink right a way (bitter but amazing).

Constipation treatment: eat cooked red beet.

Drink a lot of water, 2 liters a day at least.

Eat a lot of green vegetables, especially lettuce and parsley.

Swallow 2 tablespoons of olive oil on an empty stomach every morning.

Eat green cabbage (might make you gassy), plums, and figs. Do not eat white bread!

Bran and oatmeal.

Honey everyday.

1 banana everyday.

Eat horseradish.

Chop chick peas (hummus).

Mix dried figs with plum's concentration, add half a teaspoon of paraffin oil, 1 cup of borscht, honey, lemon and drink.

Grain tomatoes and eat, also drink tomato juice.

Grain potatoes and drink the liquid to relieve the Constipation.

The most natural time to move your bowels is within the first few hours of the day. Drinking water on an empty stomach stimulates peristalsis by reflex. So, before breakfast, drink the juice of half a lemon in 1 cup of warm water. While it may help cleanse your system, it may also make you pucker a lot. If you find it hard to drink, sweeten it with honey.

Drinking lemon juice mixed with warm water two to three times a day eases constipation.

Guava when eaten with seeds provides roughage to diet can give relief from constipation.

Add more fruits to the diet prunes pears, grapes, Orange juice & Papaya.

Mix 1 cup tomato juice, 1/4 cup carrot juice, and 1/2 cup sauerkraut juice and drink.

Newborn Babies or Infants: Stimulate the sphinctors (muscles) in the rectum of the baby by inserting the tip of a thermometer into the babies rectum and slide it back and forth. It really works.

If lemon and water is not for you, eat or drink anyone of the following at room temperature (not chilled).

1. Prune juice or stewed prunes

2. Papaya

3. Two peeled apples

4. Six to eight dried figs. Soak them overnight in a glass of water. In the morning, drink the water, then eat the figs.

The combination of dried apricots and prunes is said to work wonders. Soak six of each overnight. Next morning, eat three of each. Then, in the late afternoon, an hour or two before dinner, eat the remaining three apricots and three prunes.

Eat at least three raw fruits a day. One of them, preferably an apple, should be eaten two hours after dinner.

Take two small beets, scrub them clean and eat them raw in the morning. You should have a bowel movement about 12 hours later.

Flaxseed is a popular folk treatment for constipation. Take 1 to 2 tablespoons with lots of water right after lunch.

Sunflower seeds are filled with health-giving properties and have also been known to promote regularity. Eat a handful of shelled, raw, unsalted seeds every day.

Raw sauerkraut and its juice have friendly bacteria and may aid digestion. It's also an excellent laxative. Heat destroys the important enzymes in sauerkraut, so make sure you eat it raw.

You can also drink an 8-ounce glass of warm sauerkraut juice and then an 8-ounce glass of grapefruit juice (unsweetened)-one right after the other. It should do the job.

* We were told about an acupressure technique that is supposed to encourage a complete evacuation of the bowels in 15 minutes. For three to five minutes, massage the area underneath your lower lip, in the middle of your chin.

*The findings of recent studies say that monounsaturated fatty acid-the kind found in olive oil-is best for lowering cholesterol levels. Olive oil is also a help when a laxative is needed. Take 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil in the morning and 1 tablespoon an hour after eating dinner.

*For some people, a dose of brewer's yeast does the trick. Take 1 heaping teaspoon of brewer's yeast and 1 heaping teaspoon of wheat germ with each meal. (Both are available at health food stores.)

Start with small amounts of either or both brewer's yeast and wheat germ. Gradually increase your intake and stop when the amount you're taking works for you.

Are persimmons in season? Try one. It's been known to relieve constipation.

For a mild laxative, soak six dates in a glass of hot water. When the water is cool, drink it, then eat the dates.

If you have a favorite brand of cereal, add raw; unprocessed bran to it. Start with 1 teaspoon and gradually work your way up to 1 or 2 tablespoons each morning, depending on your reaction to it.

Exotic, But Effective

Two natural laxatives available at your greengrocer are escarole (eat it raw or boil it in water and drink the water) and Spanish onion (roast it and eat it at bedtime). The cellulose in onions gives intestinal momentum.

Hippocrates, the Greek physician and father of medicine who lived from 460-377 BC, recommended eating garlic every day to relieve constipation. Cook with it and eat it raw (in salads) whenever possible.

For a Gentle Approach

Raw spinach makes a delicious salad, has lots of vitamins and minerals and is a mild laxative, too. Be sure to wash it thoroughly.

One teaspoon of blackstrap molasses in1/2 cup of warm water, drunk an hour before lunch, might do the trick.

Okra acts as a mild laxative. Add chicken gumbo soup to your menu from time to time.

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach try this. This will definitely help to activate your colon and stimulate it to have a bowel movement. Here’s how to prepare your green drink. To add a little flavor to the chlorophyll, mix a little lemon or lime in it as it is a little bland tasting.

* Add 1-2 oz of pure liquid chlorophyll into an empty glass (you may want to start with a tablespoon or two)

* Squeeze the juice of one lemon into the glass

* Fill the glass with 8 oz of distilled water

* Drink the combination completely

Stool Softener

Every night, before eating dinner, eat a tablespoon of raisins or three prunes that have been soaking in water for a couple of hours.

How to Use Cascara Sagrada as a Constipation Remedy

Cascara Sagrada comes from the bark of the buckthorn tree. It stimulates your colon to produce stronger contraction than normal. When it does this, it can work on the most difficult and chronic cases of constipation.

It is one of the herbal constipation remedies with a strong laxative effect. It will be found in many herbal combinations that are mixed for constipation. Cascara has Chrysophanic acid, which stimulates your colon wall to produce peristaltic action. Cascara also contains a chemical called emodin, which controls the strong action of Chrysophonic acid thus producing a balanced laxative effect.

If you use cascara in a constipation remedy mixture, do not use this mixture for more than thirty days. After 30 days take a rest from it. Do not use Cascara in large amounts and for long periods since it can cause intestinal distress and become habit-forming. When you use it, you will see results in 1-2 days.

Cascara Sagrada also stimulates secretions from the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and stomach. These secretions give Cascara additional laxative effects.

Do not use Cascara Sagrada if you have irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, or ulcers. Use Cascara for a limited time. It can become habit-forming and, if used for an extended time, it can increase the risk of colon cancer. Its use also causes you to lose potassium with each bowel movement.

If you have liver problems do not use cascara sagrada full strength. Use it in combination with other herbs. Cascara is known to put a strain on the liver.

You can take Cascara Sagrada as a single herb for constipation. As a single herb, it can cause cramping and nausea. However, I recommend you used it with other herbs. In an herbal combination, the combination can detoxify your colon, tonify your colon walls, cleanse the blood and produce other synergistic actions.

In Michael Murray, N.D., book called The Pill Book Guide to Natural Medicines, he talks about the drug interaction of cascara sagrada,

“Cascara and other stimulant laxatives may decrease absorption of other drugs that pass through the gastrointestinal tract. If you are currently taking an oral medication, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before self-medicating with cascara.

Cascara may potentiate the action of digoxin and other heart medications due to potassium depletion. The use of cascara with thiazide diuretics and corticosteroids may further decrease potassium levels.”

Recommend dose for the cascara sagrada, as a single herb, is 350 – 1000mg just before bedtime.

Use 1-4 cascara sagrada powder capsules a night, but do not use these capsules for more than 10 days. Start with 1 capsule a night and increase the amount each day until you get results you want.

For a laxative tea, use one teaspoon of cascara bark in 3 cups of boiling water for 20 minutes. Drink 1-2 cups of tea just before bedtime after it has cooled to room temperature.

Cascara Sagrada is a strong constipation remedy and will help you clean out your colon even if you have chronic constipation. Use it sparely and for a short time.

As soon as you awake, start drinking warm water, a little at a time. By the time you are ready for breakfast, you should have at least taken a quart. Faithfully following this regime, you will tend to develop regularity in your morning bowel movement. This plan nicely starts the day off right.

Dairy foods, soft drinks, white flour, salt, coffee, alcohol, highly processed foods, and sugary foods should not be used, if you want to solve this problem.

Iron supplements cause constipation. So do painkillers and antidepressants.

All decongestants and antihistamines are drying agents, and may cause the stool to become dryer than it should.

Drink half a pint to a pint of cold water before breakfast, preferably distilled water. Increase the bulk of food, with free use of fruit, especially apples, oranges, and figs; also brand cakes, etc. (instead of so much smooth, non-fibrous food).

INCREASE ACTIVITY OF INTESTINAL GLANDS—Half a pint to a pint of water at bedtime, to be retained overnight; abdominal message; Hot Abdominal Pack, without plastic covering.

Neutral Enema; oil retention (oil enema to be retained throughout the night). Repeat the application till bowel is thoroughly emptied, then inject a pint of water at 750-700 F., to tone the bowel.

Bael fruit: Bael fruits are excellent laxatives. Eat raw bael fruits before dinner for 2 or 3 months for chronic constipation. For adults, take 60 gm of this fruit. Eating all kinds of fruits, except bananas and jackfruit, will ease oneself from constipation.

Pear: Ear medium-sized pear during breakfast or after dinner, or drink pear juice for a few days.

Guava: Eat 1 or 2 guavas everyday to achieve normal bowel movement.

Grapes: Grapes are good laxatives with its cellulose, sugar and organic acid content. Not only that, they also they also tone up the stomach, intestines and relieve the most chronic constipation. Eat at least 350 gm of grapes daily to achieve the desired results.

Raisins: When fresh grapes are not available, soak raisins for 24-48 hours. This will enlarge the size to that of grapes. Eat a handful early in the morning, along with the water in which they have been soaked.

Orange: Take 1 or 2 oranges after waking up or before bedtime. Orange juice helps prevent fecal accumulation in the colon.

Papaya: Papayas also acts as laxatives in the stomach. Eat half of medium-sized papaya during breakfast.

Figs: Soak 4-5 dry or fresh figs overnight in a little amount of water. Eat the soaked figs in the morning.

Spinach: Raw spinach contains the finest organic material for the cleansing of the intestinal tract. Mix 100 ml of spinach juice with an equal quantity of water. Take it twice daily to cure the serious cases of constipation within days.

Lime: Mix lime juice in a glass of hot water then add half-teaspoon salt.

Copper: Store water in a copper container overnight then drink it first thing in the morning.

Linseed: Mix a teaspoon of linseed with water and take it before each meal. Linseed acts a lubricant for constipated individuals.

Diets

A diet consisting of fresh and natural foods always brings benefit to the health. Eat a lot of unrefined foods such as wholegrain cereals, bran, honey, lentils, green and leafy vegetables, fresh and dry fruits, and milk products in the form of butter, ghee, and cream.

Although what people eat directly affects one’s health, it is how and when you eat it that makes it more effective. Chew food properly when eating meals. Avoid skipping meals and taking it irregularly.

Foods to avoid when having constipation are: sugar and sugary foods, products made of white flour, rice, bread, pulses, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, fleshy foods, preserves, white sugar, and hard-boiled eggs.

It's very informative. This remedies really help me a lot I could try some and some of this I already tried it. I was also diagnosed last month with IBS-C. It is really difficult to have these syndrome, it really affect my work now. My bowel movement is almost normal now but my pain in my abdomen still bother me almost everyday. My doctor told me just to cope up my stress, eat proper food and reduce weigth because I am also obese. Thanks ibsdoctor...
