The Story of Two Wolves: A Transformative Gift

Ancient wisdom, all major faith traditions, and even modern science are in accord when it comes to acknowledging the power of our thoughts.

The latest advances in science, and specifically physics, tell us that there are only two elements in our universe: matter and energy; and matter is actually energy moving at varying rates of vibration. Everything is some form, expenditure or expression of energy. Our thoughts are energy.

Remarkably, we are, each and every one of us, part of a great, infinite, creative Intelligence, or Energy, which is generative. And get this, oh happy day! science, and specifically neurology and psychology tell us that we can change a thought pattern or behavior within 21 days.

The power of thought has been taught through oral tradition, written about, preached on and demonstrated, defined and documented in laboratories. There are many excellent books on the subject. A favorite scripture verse of mine succinctly explains it in Romans 12:2, which urges us not to be conformed to the world, but rather to be "transformed by the renewal of our mind..."

We don't need to look any further or wonder any longer. This is the key; this is the secret; this is the answer; this is the formula. Here is the secret sauce, the secret hand-shake, the insider intel.

We can experience transformation by renewing our minds. It is readily available, works according to, and by, Law. We are designed, created and hard-wired to be able to do it.

How many people do you know who would never consider not renewing their Driver's License, and yet who don't give any effort to renewing themselves or their minds?

When we are depleted, we can tap into this boundless Source of power and access limitless energy. Every problem has a solution, and every challenge holds within it an opportunity.

Norman Vincent Peale puts it this way in his insightful classic, "The Power of Positive Thinking:"

So the first thing to do about an obstacle is simply to stand up to it and not complain about it or whine under it but forthrightly attack it. Don't go crawling through life on your hands and knees half-defeated....To the degree to which your attitude shifts from negative to positive, the mastery touch will come to you. Then with assurance, you can say to yourself under any and all circumstances and mean it, 'I don't believe in defeat.'"

The wonder and sheer beauty of this disciplined approach is that we have the right, the ability, and the power to choose what we think, how we look at things, and the way we will approach every challenge. It is that straightforward. This is demonstrably true, real, and you can do it.

Call it enlightened self-interest, call it faith, call it wisdom, call it hard-won insights from personal growth work, call it dumb luck that stumbled upon the formulaic answer. It doesn't matter what you call it; all that matters is that you call upon it.

This creative power exists and it is available to each of us, just like the air we breathe. Its all from the same Source. If you want evil, you may have it and are free to choose it. If you want all good things, you may have them.

Here is the clearest, simplest story I've ever seen, from ancestral Cherokee wisdom, which lays it out for us. After reading this story, I was so moved that I put two of my many wolf photos with it, and made it into both a greeting card and a poster. The poster and cards are available at

The Lesson of Two Wolves

Whether aware or clueless, whether intentionally or by default and habit, we are making our choice every day. We are nurturing and attracting one or the other of these "wolves" and their powerful, defining attributes into our lives, whether or not we realize it.

Make no mistake about this. You and I are choosing, whether or not we think we are. Look at what you have in your life, and decide if its what you most want. If it isn't, you can absolutely, positively change it.

Which "wolf" have you been feeding? Which one do you most want to feed? Which one will you now feed?

If you read this story with an open heart and mind, word for word, every day for 21 days (which is how long scientific studies have shown we need to change a habit or thought pattern), I promise you that your life can not and will not remain the same. Of course, you'll likely see and feel positive results almost immediately, but it is important to stay with the practice until there is a transformation through the renewing of your mind.

If you do this, I'd love to hear the story of your results and how it changes your life.

Wonderfully accessible, with real life stories that illustrate the power of this practice.

Great Hub. Happiness is a choice and so many prefer to battle with life than choose to see the positives. Thanks for a great reminder. Excellent photos.
