What a Detox Diet can Do for You
It´s been four years or so when I decided to go on a diet. At the time. I didn´t know what a detox diet was. I just knew my body needed a cleansing. Not an emergency! or urgency!, but definately, I wanted to get rid of my bad eating habits.
We are accustomed to eat all kinds of food; some of them are healthy food; others are loaded with fat, artificial flavors and sweeteners that harm our system and produce nutritional deficiencies. Our body possesses a natural mechanism of detoxification, which it uses when unnecessary nutrients need to be evacuated from the body.
The age of a person determines his/her nutritional requirements; a growing child will need the same nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals) as an adult does, but in different amounts. A teen-ager will need more calcium for growing bones than an adult will. A pregnant woman will need to consume more protein to support her growing baby.
The nutrients needed may also be determined by our lifestyle. An athlete will require more energy for optimal performance; however, a sedentary person (one that spends hours watching TV, for example) may not require as much energy from nutrients.
The Liver in Detoxification
- A good working liver gets rid of 99% of toxins; however when the liver is damaged due to alcoholism; for example, the liver will not work as efficiently.
- Each day the liver produces an approximate amount of 1 quart of bile, which is used as a transporter of toxic substances in the intestines. Once in the intestines, the bile and the toxins are absorbed by fiber and excreted out of the body.

The liver is one the the most important organs in the human body. This organ is the one our system uses to get rid of toxins in the body. Nearly two quarts of blood go through the liver every minute for filtering.
Throughout this hub, I´m going to explain how and why I started a detox diet and what kinds of foods supported me during the endeavor.
Like I said before, I didn´t know what a detox diet was when I decided to go on a diet. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to follow a more healthy lifestyle than the one I was accustomed.

All this occurred one day. I had eaten a highly seasoned mexican dish which make me feel too bad after digestion. SOme dys later, a doctor diagnosed high contents of sugar in my blood after analysing some laboratory tests.
¨There is high levels of sugar in your blood,¨he said.
¨So, what should I do,¨I inquired.
¨Change you eating habits,¨ he advised.
He did not have to give me more advises, I comprehended instantly. Unhealthy eating habits sooner or later become a headache to one´s health.
I went home and begin to think in the best types of food to implement in my diet......

Breakfast (Detox Diet)
The following day, I began the detox diet. First, I got all the foods available at the moment; some others were implemented in the diet as they were found in the supermarket.
My weight at that moment was in between 77-80 kilos (170-175 pounds). In addition, my height is 1.80 meters (5.9 feet) which is the average normal.
Carrots have been one of my preferred types of vegetables, so I grabbed one that I had already washed and began to cut pieces off it with my teeth. Three carrots, an orange and an apple were my breakfast that day.
I consumed more carrots during the first days than anything else. Over time, they were consumed with measure, along with the other foods.
From here on, my system went into catabolism mode, metabolic process by which the energy sources in the body, such as fat, are depleted.
Carrots are good sources of beta-carotene, which can be turned into vitamin A by metabolic processes. They´re also rich in vitamins B, C, K; soluble and insoluble fiber and minerals, such as potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and calcium.

Nutritional Balance and Moderation
For lunch, I made steamed rice with added little soy meat and no ingredients, just a pinch of salt. I remember feeling hungry after the meal, but I chose to eat fruit instead of a hearty meal.
I did not have to use the blender to extract the juices from the fruits; I just peeled them off, in the case of the banana, pineapple and orange, and devoured the mangoes, grapes or tomatoes, after having thoroughly washed them, along with their peel.
The fruits and vegetables formed part of my daily boost of energy. I could carry some with me and give them a bite if my system indicated me to do so.
The grains (nuts and peanuts), which are easily found in every corner in my country were included in moderation if my system signaled me to do so.
Steps You May Follow During a Detox Diet
1st measure your weight and height
2nd start the first day by drinking or consuming your favorite type of fruit
3rd include other types of juicy fruits in the diet
4th include an energy booster, such as bananas, nuts and peanuts when needed
5th take a daily walk around the corner, the more you walk, the better
6th drink only pure drinking water
Conclusion and Results
After the first week of implementing the diet, my body weight lowered down to about 60 kilos (132 pounds). I did not feel week, instead, I used to walk more often than before the implementation of the diet and always carry with me my energy boosters (fruits, nuts).
I quit soft drinks and chose to drink just pure drinking water. My system responded optimally and the types of foods that I chose to detox my body were included, as they were needed.
The daily dishes varied in the way they were combined with the other foods, and the fruits and vegetables were consumed along with their peel. I still do it whenever I eat fruits.
Even though nobody supervised me, I implemented this procedure with care and never felt the necessity to consult a dietitian.
In the present, I have gained my ideal weight and remain as slim and without a bulging stomach as a teen-ager.
