Aloe Vera Acne Treatment - For Natural Acne Relief
As anyone who has ever suffered from acne (me included) knows, it's no fun. While many turn to antibiotics or other doctor-prescribed medicines, these aren’t always effective, and in any case, a lot of people prefer to try natural acne remedies. These typically work in a gentler way, without the unpleasant side effects of many conventional acne medication. One such holistic approach is to use an aloe vera acne treatment.
Aloe vera is an evergreen plant that is famous for its gel-filled leaves. This clear gel is rich in nutrients, with over 200 identified so far. It also contains vitamins, amino acids, minerals, enzymes and other helpful chemicals and substances, which combine to give aloe vera its well-known healing properties.
How can aloe vera work to get rid of acne?
Aloe vera can help with acne in various ways. It has anti-bacterial properties, which are beneficial because acne is associated with the presence of bacteria which live on the oily sebum that clogs the pores of people with acne-prone skin. The aloe gel is also an astringent, which can help counteract excessive oiliness, as well as being an anti-inflammatory, with a very soothing effect on the inflammation that acne can cause.
How to use aloe vera to treat acne
If you’re interested in trying aloe vera for spots, there are different ways you could use it. Applying the aloe gel to the affected areas directly is the easiest method – you can buy pure aloe vera gel in pharmacies and health stores, as well as online, or you could grow your own aloe plants and cut open a leaf to get the gel directly. Some aloe gels have other natural ingredients added – I have one by Ransom that contains tea tree oil, which is also good for acne blemishes.
There’s also a wide choice of creams, lotions and other skin products that contain aloe vera. Look for those that contain aloe as a main ingredient (it should be listed at or near the top of the ingredients list), and avoid products with potentially harmful chemicals – natural ingredients are better for your body, and for the environment.
Another way to use aloe vera for acne is to take it internally, in the form of high quality aloe vera juice, powder or capsules. This can help you to develop healthy skin from the inside out.

Which aloe vera products are best for acne?
This is a difficult question to answer, as everyone will get different results, and will have different preferences. I personally like to use aloe vera gel, as it’s so easy to use and readily available, and economical too. It’s also handy to have around as it can be used for lots of other things too, such as itches, rashes, inflammation etc. If you decide to use aloe gel, growing your own will give you the purest, freshest gel, but this isn’t always practical, and a packaged pure gel is the next best option.
Creams containing aloe vera can also be useful and are easy to find and use, but it’s important to check that there’s enough active ingredient for it to have an effect – not all ‘aloe vera’ creams have this!
For internal use, look for aloe vera juice or capsules that don’t contain harmful or unnecessary additives. Organically produced products are generally better too, as you won’t be taking in potentially harmful chemicals at the same time. In the case of aloe juice, avoid those that have added sugar or other nasties.

Does aloe vera really help cure acne?
Like any other acne remedy, aloe vera unfortunately isn’t going to work for everyone. But many people have had great results from its use, and considering that it’s readily available and free of side effects for most people (some have allergies or other adverse reactions, although these are quite rare), it’s well worth trying. Just be sure to stick with whatever type of aloe you choose for at least several weeks, so you give it a fair chance.
