I was wondering - when I was little we used to go to the woods and pick "gooseberries" and make gooseberry pie...they looks so similar to your fruit. I wonder if they could be related?

We have gooseberries in Florida. I have heard of gooseberry tea, but don't know anyone who who actually made any. The plants look the same, and I often see raccoons delicately peeling them and nibbling on the pulp. Are they the same?

@ RealHousewife, WD Curry, The botanical name for Amla is, Phyllanthus or Emblica Officinalis and the English name is,Indian Gooseberry myrobalan.

If this is the name of the gooseberries you have over there, then they would be the ones I'm referring to.

A link to an interesting and informative hub on gooseberries by hubber len7288 is here.Amla, is one of the several types of gooseberries available.

Marisol 4 years ago

Hi Rajan, first off I want to than you for sharing this info on this powerful fruit. I'm 25 years old and am experiencing hair loss due to hypothyroidism. I'm also always tired, have dark under eye circles and poor skin complexion. I've done some research and found that there are all kinds of home remedies for these issues, such as Rosemary, jojoba oil, amla and fenugreek. However, I have decided to stick with Fenugreek and Amla. Do you know if I can take both Fenugreek and Amla both orally as a dietary supplement for overall health and apply them topically to skin, hair, and scalp? If so, in what forms do I take them; powder form, extract, pill form from local vitamin store? Also, I live in California and have no idea where to purchase the Fenugreek and Amla, can I buy them at an Indian grocery store? Thank you

rajan jolly profile image

rajan jolly 4 years ago from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar,INDIA. Author

Marisol, let me thank you first for reading this post. Fenugreek affects the thyroid hormones so consult your doctor before consuming them. Amla is believed to help in hyperthyroidism. However since you have thyroid disease it is better to consult your doctor before using them.

Both fenugreek called Methi Dana in India and Amla will be available in Indian grocery stores in California.

Thanks.

How suitable is adding amla?

rajan jolly profile image

Taking 1 tsp of amla everyday is useful in general, Harsha!

Harsha Vardhana R profile image

Harsha Vardhana R 2 years ago from Bangalore

Rajan, thanks for the clarity. I would take amla separately.

1 more query. I just got a 1000 ml Amla 'Ras' (Syrup) from an Ayurvedic shop. It says it has 1000 mg of Sodium Benzoate too! I am wondering why a chemical in an Ayurvedic extract?

Could you please give your opinion on this?

rajan jolly profile image

rajan jolly 2 years ago from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar,INDIA. Author

Sodium benzoate is added as a preservative in acidic foods with a pH of 4.5 and lower. But I've read of the dangers of sodium benzoate; if it is combined with vitamin c and potassium benzoate, benzene which is a known carcinogen is produced.

So see the list of ingredients and judge for yourself Harsha.

Any one wants to use on for hair, pl note - using shampoo is harmful for hair, contains detergent to foam and remove the dirt, if you use, should wash minimum of 30 times. Hence use shikakai powder in place of shampoo.
