An alternative approach to prostate cancer pinpoints causes as bases of prevention and treatment.
Yesterday I viewed a taped interview of Dr. Jun Gereal, a urologist. He talked on prostate cancer detection and prospects of survival (gmanews.TV. August 19,2011).
Prostate cancer ranks fourth as killer of victims of cancer, the ranking being lung cancer, first; liver cancer, second; colon cancer, third; prostate cancer, fourth. This ranking holds true in the Philippines, said Dr. Gereal.
Asked if what causes prostate cancer, Dr. Gereal said there are studies that correlate consumption of meat to prostate cancer. That is, consumption of meat and prostate cancer are associated. However, it does not mean that consumption of meat causes prostate cancer.
The incidence of prostate cancer is higher in the United States because Americans eat more meat than Filipinos do, said Dr. Gereal. But Filipinos are imitating the Americans that is why the incidence of prostate cancer is on the rise in the Philippines, he said.
The prostate gland is located between the urethra and bladder. The cancer partially blocks the flow of urine.
What is the cause of prostate cancer?
Mutation causes cancer, wrote Howard Kauffman, MD (The Melanoma Book. 2005). However, Dr. Kauffman did not elaborate on the mechanism of mutation. His book deals on the diagnosis, phasing and treatment of melanoma which is cancer of the skin.

The prostate gland is located immediately near the urinary bladder. Its primary function is to give the fluid for the "seed" that will fertilize the egg, according to Dr. Gereal.
This discussion is more of a journey in discovery.
Let us go back to the belief in perpetuation of species. The virus perpetuates itself. The RNA (ribonucleic acid) virus produces several RNA virus in a host organism. A retrovirus gets into a host cell of bacteria or man, uses the DNA of the host and produces more retrovirus. A bacterium divides into two, such division occurs as a chain reaction and several bacteria are produced. Higher multi-celled organisms, like human beings, have the male and female and produce their young.
The perpetuation of species is ensured by the provision of food and protection. For example, a bean seed has two cotyledons which are actually food for the germinating embryo.
In men, the "seed" and fluid are provided with protection.
Zinc is concentrated in "seed" and its fluid and prostate gland (Ulene, A. MD. Dr. Art Ulene’s Complete Guide to Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs. 2000:205).
"...almost half of your body's supply of selenium is located in your testicles and seminal ducts next to your prostate gland..." Your seed "also includes significant amounts of the mineral, so each time you (discharge during gratification) you lost a quantity of selenium" (Berger, S. How To Be Your Own Nutritionist.1987:231, parenthetical mine). The recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 2 mcg; optimal level is 150 mcg; maximal level is 300 mcg (same source as above:345).
It must be noted that Dr. Ulene's, and Berger's observations were published years apart and in separate books. Not one of these authors made any medical interpretation of their observations. I have not yet found a literature in medical research that made use of these observations, for example, making them parameters of a research project, or making a hypothesis out of them.
We will attempt to make an interpretation using perpetuation of species as an umbrella premise, an assumption. We will not go into proving perpetuation of species, just a brief explanation of it like the one given above.
The question is: why are zinc and selenium concentrated in the prostate gland, and the "seed" and fluid?
There is a similar question: why is coenzyme Q10 concentrated in the heart?
Answer: coQ10 is involved in the production of energy, the adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The heart needs a steady supply of adequate energy because of its non-stop pumping. If a person’s supply of coQ10 in his body goes down to 25% he dies ((Bliznakov, E. MD. and G.L., Hunt. The Miracle Nutrient Coenzyme Q10. 1986).
Zinc and selenium ensure perpetuation of species by protecting the prostate gland, and the "seed" and its fluid. Zinc and selenium separately are antioxidants - they catch free radicals and reactive oxygen species produced in the prostate gland. They are constituents of glutathione.
The glutathione enzyme system ensures the survival of man against free radical attack. Without the glutathione system, man or woman becomes sick of progeria, a heritable lack of built-in antioxidant. One sick of progeria dies of old age, due to free radical attack, when s/he is only around 10 years old (calendar age).
Mechanism of glutathione enzyme system
The molecular oxygen that we breathe is used in the metabolism of glucose to produce energy (ATP). By-products of this metabolism are water, carbon dioxide and superoxide. A molecular oxygen (with two unpaired electrons) loses one unpaired electron during metabolism and is left with one unpaired electron, now turned into a superoxide which is a master free radical. It can produce hydroxyl radical, an alkoxy radical and hydrogen peroxide; turn low density lipoprotein into LDL-oxy or bad cholesterol.
The enzyme antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) of the cell converts superoxides into hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase, another enzyme, dismantles hydrogen peroxide into safe water by donating one electron, among other things. Glutathione reductase, another enzyme, gives back one electron to glutathione peroxidase, recycling it and enabling the same glutathione peroxidase to dismantle another hydrogen peroxide (Sharma, H, MD. Freedom from Disease. 1993).
Glutathione synthase makes glutathione from elements provided by nutrition, except lipoic acid which the body makes (Pressman, A. D.C., Ph.D., C.C.N. with Sheila Buff. Glutathione: The Ultimate Antioxidant. 1998).Glutathione consists of glutamate, cystine, cysteine and cofactors, B2, lipoic acid, zine and selenium.
Zinc acting alone protects the "seed" and its fluid and helps ensure perpetuation of species. Zinc is also a component of the enzyme superoxide dismutase; one kind is zinc/copper SOD, the other is manganese SOD. Selenium alone acts the way zinc does. These minerals are a part of a glutathione enzyme system. Zinc and selenium have the capability to protect the prostate gland, and "seed" and its fluid that ensure the perpetuation of species. They are found concentrated in the prostate gland, and "seed" and fluid.
Dr. Gereal missed in pinpointing the cause of prostate cancer because he used the frameworks of physiology and germ theory. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species belong in the free radical theories of disease (that involve physics and biochemistry). However, Dr. Gereal was not far from the mark because processed meat gives rise to free radicals. Meat treated with nitrite or nitrosamine is a carcinogen.
An alternative approach to prostate cancer is aware of the presence of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Such approach recognizes free radicals and reactive oxygen species as causes of disease. I have a Hub “Free Radicals with Unpaired Electrons in Alternative Medicine.”
The alternative approach involving free radicals and ROS provides primary prevention. That is, it can prevent mutation that results in prostate cancer; thus it prevents prostate cancer. It applies antioxidants, chelation therapy and immunotherapy which is different from chemotherapy. Chemotherapy destroys both cancer cells and healthy cells in the vicinity of diseased cells. Immunotherapy destroys cancer cells and leave healthy cells unharmed (Kauffman. H. The Melanoma Book. 2005). With the use of chelation (oral or infusion) and immunotherapy, cancer can be prevented, or halted, or regressed and cured. Oral chelators are vitamins A, C, B complex, and E (Walker, M. MPD. The Miracle Healing Power of Chelation Therapy. 1986). Infusion chelation therapy includes EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate), minerals and vitamins.

An alternative diagnostic protocol can be developed for prostate cancer. The level of selenium can be used as an indicator (recommended daily allowance is 2 mcg; optimal level is 150 mcg; maximal level is 300 mcg). A lot of selenium is discharged with the "seed" and its fluid during sexual activity. A low level of selenium indicates that protection against prostate cancer is deficient. The level of selenium can be measured from the discharge of the man during sexual gratification. A bonus is that the level of zinc in the discharge can be measured as well. RDA for zinc is 15 mg for men and women; optimal level is 75 mg; maximum level is 150 mg (Berger, S. How to be Your Own Nutritionist.1987:348). With the results of diagnosis one can take a preventive course against prostate cancer. This diagnostic tool can be useful even when prostate cancer had already taken hold.

A selenium level of below 2 mcg is a warning that protection against prostate cancer is lacking. Prevention is a better course to take.
The selenium protection against prostate cancer protocol is like the protection against sudden death due to lack of coenzymeQ10 and sodium/potassium pump. In coQ10, a person who reaches a level below 25 percent of normal of this coenzyme dies.
"If the essential levels of CoQ10 in your body drop much below a 75 percent deficiency, life can no longer be sustained" (Bliznakov, E. G. MD. and G.L. Hunt. The Miracle Nutrient Coenzyme Q10):8). The level of coQ10 can be measured from a sample of blood.
The sodium/potassium pump is an activity along action potential. That is, the cell works against the gradient -- a solute moves from an area with less concentration toward another with greater concentration energized by adenosine triphosphate. The usual movement is from the greater concentration toward the lesser concentration. In a cell the concentration of sodium outside across the membrane is greater than the concentration of potassium inside he cell. Potassium moves toward the outside. The ideal ratio is 4 ions of sodium to 3 ions of potassium. If an imbalance occurs in this ratio, the work of the pump becomes defective. If an imbalanced ratio occurs in heart muscles, the pumping of the heart is compromised. "To live, the cell must pump" (McElroy, W. Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry. 1961). The incidence of sodium/potassium imbalance is now on the rise and more people are hospitalized due to lack of potassium. There is a laboratory test for potassium.
The protective role of selenium against prostate cancer is delivered through the glutathione enzyme system, among others. To recall, metabolism in the body produces superoxide as a by-product. Superoxide is a master free radical in that it induces the production of reactive oxygen species. A superoxide reacting with another superoxide, catalyzed by superoxide dismutase, produces hydrogen peroxide. A superoxide reacting with lipids produces lipid peroxide. Both hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxide are reactive oxygen species that grab electrons of molecules or tissue inflicting damage. Lipid peroxide interacting with iron and copper produces alkoxy radical and hydroxyl respectively that are also reactive oxygen species. Hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxide are dismantled by the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (Sharma, H. Freedom from Disease. 1993:116-119). Without the glutathione enzyme system (consisting of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione synthetase), the work of superoxide dismutase is useless, rather it is even hazardous.
Glutathione peroxidase has four atoms of selenium (Cranton, D., MD and A. Brecher. Bypassing Bypass. 1984:183).
The development of a diagnostic tool based on selenium level looks fairly easy. That for BRCA1, the gene marker of heritable breast cancer, and BRCA2, gene marker of heritable ovarian cancer, were much more difficult. It took 20 years to locate BRCA1 and 25 years for BRCA2 whose use is mainly to find if these genes had been mutated in a person, whether male or female both of whom can develop breast cancer. BRCA1 is located in the long arm of chromosome 17; BRCA2 is located in the long arm of chromosome 13. There are 48 chromosomes in the nucleus of each cell of a human being. A person who inherited a predisposition to breast cancer has one allele of BRCA1 mutated; to ovarian cancer, has one allele of BRCA2 mutated. Myriad company and the Utah University jointly hold the patent for BRCA1 and BRCA2 tests. Tests are paid for; Myriad is reported to have spent $500 million for research and marketing.
Perhaps the one barrier difficult to hurdle is the switch over from the conventional view of prostate cancer to the alternative view of free radical theories of disease. In the long past, it had been the belief that diseases are generated spontaneously. Jenner, Koch, and Pasteur changed that belief. It took Joseph Lister 40 years to convince the medical profession to adopt Pasteur's germ theory of diseases and use antiseptics in surgery or in delivering babies to save the baby, especially the mother.
