The Amazing Chocolate Pie Diet Adventure

I am going through a rather incredible diet adventure in my effort to lose about 60 pounds. Mostly, I have been practicing the precepts of the Fit for Life diet plan co-created by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. They base their diet on the food combining precepts.

Now don't get excited! Their diet does not involve eating a piece of chocolate pie every day; although, if you read the book entitled "Fit for Life Not Fat for Life" published in 2003, Harvey Diamond does not prohibit it. He states something to the effect that if you desire to have a piece of pie or cake, eat it around 4:00 in the afternoon. That way, it is about 3 hours since you have eaten lunch and 3 hours before you will be eating dinner.

Since January 22, 2011, I have been attempting the following:

* Eating only raw fruit prior to noon. With the exception of one day, I have accomplished that quite easily as I love fruit. It is quite a treat! Additionally, I have never been a big cereal eater anyway.

* I am working my way toward having a salad twice a day or a salad with one of my meals and raw vegetables with another one of my meals. That is a work-in-progress.

* I have been using my juicer and experimenting with different raw veggie and fruit combinations.

* I am getting better at not mixing proteins and starches at the same meal. I am by no means perfect at this; however, I am getting better.

* I am working my way toward making certain that at least 50% of what I consume every day is raw fruit or raw veggies.

The Fit for Life diet is not calorie-counting. It is also not portion control; however, that is a part of it to a certain extent. You can go crazy on fruit as long as it is on an empty stomach. For the rest of the day, you can go crazy with raw veggies and cooked veggies; although, raw veggies are better.

* When I get tempted to do that hand-to-mouth snacking, I have been attempting to do that with a raw veggie mix of peppers, cucumbers, carrots, and celery.

I generally meet my parents for dinner about once a week at Golden Corral. When one of my friends meets me for lunch or dinner, we sometimes choose to meet at Golden Corral. When I go to get either my husband's car serviced or my car car serviced, we pass right by a Golden Corral. Every now and then, we eat there.

Just about every time I go, I get a piece of Chocolate Chess Pie and gobble it down with great enjoyment. I personally feel that they have the best-tasting chocolate pie I have ever consumed. My struggle has been to only eat one piece of pie rather than two. Up to about two weeks ago, one of my greatest accomplishments was not allowing myself to indulge in that second piece. I would feel quite victorious as a result.

Then, a few days ago, I met my best girlfriend for lunch. I ate a lot of proteins and cooked veggies. I had a big salad. Then I walked to the dessert bar to get a piece of my beloved Chocolate Chess Pie. I sat back down, picked up my fork, and took a bite.

Pause. Hmmmm! That didn't taste just right. Let me give it another try.

I took a second bite. Pause. My taste buds don't seem to be working. But how could that be? I could fully taste everything else I have placed in my mouth during this meal.

FYI - It was not that long ago that I finished up my last chemo treatment. That was on July 1, 2010. During the six months I went through chemo for my now cured breast cancer, I could not taste most of what I put in my mouth. This chocolate pie was one of the few things that I could taste. So, now, all of a sudden, not to be able to taste it felt like a bad case of déjà vu.

I took a third bite and then a fourth. Then I put my fork down and pushed the plate away. The pie tasted like sawdust. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not trying to suggest that there was anything wrong with their pie. I'm sure it was absolute perfection to anybody else. It was me and my taste buds.

I think that God had orchestrated it that chocolate pie was no longer appealing to me and my taste buds. I think that due to all the raw fruit and veggies I had been consuming, my taste buds preferred those tastes instead.

Later on that day, I did have a piece of white cake with white icing I had made for my husband when he had a bad day. It still tasted good. So it wasn't all sweet things. It was just one of my former greatest temptations - Chocolate Chess Pie from Golden Corral.

I knew that I would be meeting my parents for dinner four days later. That would be last night, February 26, 2011. As usual, we met at Golden Corral. I live in a city 45 minutes away from where they live. This restaurant is one that both my parents and I enjoy, and it is very convenient to their home.

I was determined to discover if that was a one-time occurrence or whether it would happen again at this meal.

The first thing I did was walk to the dessert bar. I took two pictures of the chocolate pie right after a woman grabbed a piece. The manager came over to see what I was doing. I told him that I had been trying to describe this pie to a friend and thought a picture would do it a lot better. He praised the pie. I agreed. Because other than that one day, I thought it was one of the best things ever; therefore, I was being honest.

I grabbed a piece of pie and put it on a plate. I took it back to the table and took two pictures of it.

Then I went and grabbed my actual meal of veggies galore and some seafood followed by a large salad. I loved every bite. Yum!

Then the moment came. I pulled the piece of chocolate pie in front of me that you see pictured below. I picked up my fork and took a bite. Hmmmm! It tasted a little better than the other day but still not right. I took a second bite. I might have taken a third. Nope! It did not appeal to me whatsoever.

I put down my fork and said, "I am so excited! I don't like this pie anymore. My diet must be succeeding better than I originally anticipated."

My father said, "I am so excited too. Get me a fork, please!" Then he gobbled down the rest of that piece of pie. There had not been any up there when he had been ready to get dessert.

I went and got some ice cream. It tasted overly sweet. I ate a few bites but left about half ot it untouched.

My Dad said, "You didn't finish your ice cream."

I said, "I still have 54 more pounds to lose."

He nodded and said, "Oh, okay." He did not push me to eat any more.

I think next time I go, I will just eat red jello or perhaps get a larger salad.

I am absolutely thrilled that I am no longer tempted to eat a dessert that has 380 calories. It is lovely that my body is obviously loving this diet so much it does not make me feel as tempted by sweets - at least, not by this one. No more Chocolate Chess Pie or any kind of chocolate pie for me!
