Being Positive Is Your Choice

Let's get right into the nuts and bolts of why being positive is your choice. To begin with, here is a word I'd like you to write down three times. Perception. You're going to learn how important this word is and just how it connects with being positive.

I'm going to throw a thought at you in the form of a question. How would you like to live in a state of uninterrupted peace and bliss? Of course you would. This is what everyone is looking for. Do you know that this is your true nature? Author,Eckhart Tolle, (The Power of Now), writes that we already have intense joy inside of us. He further states "You have it already (intense joy). You just can't feel it because your mind is making too much noise."

No matter who you are or where you are you can learn to free yourself from enslavement to the mind and enter into an enlightened state of thinking which is being positive. It is your choice.

You have the power to interrupt a negative thought.

How To Stop Negative Thinking

Choosing your thoughts will control your inner-dialogue. It is this "self-talk" that cements either a positive attitude or a negative one. Try the following strategies:

  • Interrupt the negative thought. When we learn how to interrupt the negative inner-dialogue, we are taking the first step to choosing a positive thought over a negative thought.
  • Shout out loud - Stop! You'll be surprised how fast the negative thought will vanish. Do this whenever you have a negative thought or inner-dialogue going on. If you practice this enough, you will come to the point where you can do this in your mind.
  • Using a shhh sound works well for me. The sound is quick and deliberate.
  • Sing. Yes, that's right. As soon as your mind begins to dwell on a negative thought or an unhappy past experience - start singing. Sing anything, just to interrupt the present thought.
  • The final step is to replace the negative thought with something pleasant. It can be anything that is not related to the negative thought. Visualize a baby laughing or see yourself relaxing on a tropical beach.

Negative thinking is a habit that has been developed over time. We can stop this behavior and replace it with positive, empowering thoughts. Being positive is your choice.

Guard your thoughts. They are your treasures.

Perception and Positive Thinking

What does perception have to do with positive thinking? It has everything to do with how we think and how we interpret experiences. This is what Douglas Adams had to say about perception. "Everything you see or hear or experience in any way at all is specific to you. You create a universe by perceiving it, so everything in the universe you perceive is specific to you."

In other words, you create your own reality beginning with your thoughts. If you don't like the way your life is going, change it. Change your thoughts to change your life.

What you perceive becomes your reality. This might be a bit to take in, but as you practice controlling your thoughts, you will come to realize that this is true. Author Wayne Dyer has a quote that serves me well. "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

One of my favorite authors is the late Stephen R. Covey. One of his most famous quotes is, "To change ourselves effectively, we first have to change our perceptions."

This quote clearly indicates the power that exists in making good, positive choices.

Exercise your imagination. Explore the path along the way. Discover the beauty and the positive.
Exercise your imagination. Explore the path along the way. Discover the beauty and the positive. | Source

Your Imagination Will Change Your Perceptions

One of our most treasured gifts is our imagination. Most of us fail to use this remarkable tool in such a way as to change our perception of things. Our imagination is a powerful mind-brain function. We can even use mental imagery to reduce pain in the body. I know from personal experience that by using my imagination I am able to divert the feeling of pain by focusing on positive, beautiful and happy thoughts and imagery.

The imagination is so powerful that according to scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, future research will be done on brain-computer interfaces for people who are paralyzed. Their imaginations will control virtual and artificial devices. How amazing this is.

Emotion - The Body's Reaction To Your Mind

The mind, in the way I'm referring to the word isn't just a thought. It also includes emotions. Where your mind and body meet, emotion will arise. It's the body's reaction to the mind. If you cannot feel your emotions and you are cut off from them, you'll eventually feel them on a physical level.

An example of this is people that carry a lot of anger inside without expressing it, are more likely to be attacked either physically or verbally by another angry person.

Feel your body within to focus on your emotions. Allow them to be expressed when you are in a comfortable, safe and personal place. Most of us grow up being made to control and hold in our emotions. Feelings must not be judged. Feelings 'just are.'

A Book That Helped Me Through The Hardest Time Of My Life

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling.

Being Positive Is To Be In The Moment

When you allow yourself to be in the moment, you are being your deepest self. The noisy 'chitter-chatter' that goes on and on in the mind will come to a complete stop. This is a powerful way to switch from negative thinking to more positive thoughts.

We live in fast times with fast food and fast thoughts. How many times do you really taste the chocolate flavor, texture and smells of a chocolate dessert or snack? We wolf the delicious food down, not even remembering we ate it. We don't even live in the moment as we enjoy one of life's greatest pleasures - eating.

Author, Eckhert Tolle, describes 'being' as "Being can be felt as the ever present I am that is beyond name and form. To feel and thus to know that you are and to abide in that deeply rooted state is enlightenment."

Meditation Quiets The Mind

Meditation is a personal creative experience. As you practice meditation you begin to understand that there is another way to view reality than the way you have always taken for granted. You come to learn that your problems are based on fear.

These first insights only occur when you are in your most quiet and self-collected moments. The clarity and reassurance you're beginning to feel will pour out into your daily tasks. You'll find that you're not s sensitive as before, not so defensive and not so rushed and anxious.

You will discover inner joy, inner gladness and inner light. You give up one way of being and grow into another. Meditation is a choice just as being positive is your choice.

An Empowering Video

How to Quiet The Mind

Good coping skills lie in the self-talk and the differing ways of interpreting events over time. It might be useful to recast our various assumptions about the nature of self-talks into four positive statements. These are:

1. Only I can upset myself which I do with my self talk.

2. My self talks are learned so I can learn new ones.

3. Although it may be difficult to change old patterns, with effort and persistence I can change.

4. Ultimately I can regulate the nature, intensity and duration of my emotional responses.

With these assumptions as a foundation we are ready to begin addressing specific patterns of self talk and replacing any dysfunctional and stress-producing thoughts with functional and health-enhancing thoughts.

Points To Remember For Being Positive

As we learn to use some of these techniques for choosing positive thoughts over negative thoughts, we may even run into a miracle now and then. Don't be surprised if this happens to you.

Here are some key points to take with you:

  • Living in a state of uninterrupted peace and bliss is your natural state.
  • You can learn to free yourself from enslavement of the mind.
  • Practice the list of strategies to interrupt any negative self-talk.
  • Negative thinking is a habit and can be changed to positive thinking.
  • Your perception influences your thoughts and interpretation.
  • Use mental imagery, (imagination) to change your perception.
  • Focusing on your emotions is your body's reaction to your mind.
  • Avoid judging feelings.
  • To be positive, be in the moment.
  • Quiet your mind, (the chit-chat.)
  • Practice meditation each day to quiet your mind and to transform your life.
  • Ego is our false self and blocks who we really are. We can only see clearly when we are without ego.
  • When you have a choice to be right or be kind, always choose to be kind.

Focus on all that is good. One way to do this is to keep a daily gratitude list. And allow plenty of patience as you practice these new concepts. You will forget from time to time. That is perfectly okay. You will eventually grow to the point where your choice to being positive will move you to Divine Love.

Oh Yes!! I have caught myself slipping a negative thought in and then stopping it and asking myself where the bleep did that come from? LOL I have also learned that being sick, not the really hard stuff, is also a negative thought. I have shouted out loud for that to stop too and it did. I have also told myself to stop thinking about being sick and stop the madness and it did. We are spirits in a body that is similar to being a puppet. It is in this body that we learn what and how to control it (the mind). Now that I do know about these things and learned them by experimenting does not mean that I have total control...and I do not think that I ever will. This is a wonderful article and of course I am going to share it just like I did with your crying article.

I have been so struggling to learn and apply these principles. I know them to be true; yet when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges in life with one's health, or the failing health of one's partner, it is difficult to remember to be happy by choice, or that we even have a choice.

Your photo illustration at the head of your article is a perfect example. I recently posted this old bit on Facebook, with the following tongue-in-cheek commentary:

The pessimist says the glass is half empty.

The optimist says the glass is half full.

The existentialist says "it is what it is."

The engineer says the glass is twice as large as it needs to be.

Many people voted that up and funny; but I also got the following additional comments:

The opportunist drinks it.

The gamer drinks it and says, "how will this affect me?"

and finally, The realist says, "The glass is completely full; half with water; half with air."

Food for thought, indeed. Voted up, useful and interesting.

Sunshine625 - Thank you so much! Linda, you are a positive ray of sunshine spreading joy to everyone here in our Hubpage family.

Audrey Howitt - Thank you lovely lady!

Lady Guinevere - It would sure be fun to sit down and share thoughts on this subject. I find that it's easy to get distracted and of course when that happens, there goes trying to 'be in the now.' Thanks so much and I appreciate your sharing this.

Hello, dear Bill - What is PIPO? If it's covered in dark chocolate I'll take it:)

Thank you great friend and do enjoy this sunshine.

Dear Liz - Oh, I agree that this is a challenge and even more needed when surrounded by pain and declining health.

Thanks for sharing your "glass is half empty, half full" remarks. I got such a kick out of the existentialist and the gamer. LOL!

Thank you wonderful lady for the vote and ratings. Hope "everything" is working okay for you.

One of the biggest things that helped me become more positive was to get rid of the chronically-negative people out of my life. I know that sounds harsh to those who haven't accomplished this before or to those who have and then experienced extreme guilt.

But let me share something with you.

When a person makes you feel less YOU each time you hang out with them, even with you giving hints (or even if you don't give hints and are just extremely uncomfortable), and this happens repeatedly without that person adjusting to your needs in the friend- or relationship? That person does not care about your needs. And you don't need that in your life.

Since I've stopped talking to a non-friend in January, I've had such a positive outlook on life, such a happier disposition. And you know what? I FEEL like things are working out for the better for me. I may not be where I want to be, but I'm on the way to it! And I can just FEEL this, it's not just a reminder I have to keep giving myself.

I know that some of us don't have the opportunity to get rid of the negative people because they're blood relatives or roommates that we live with, and I sincerely hope that you come up with ways to limit their presence in your day-to-day activities. That's what's going to clear your head.

Meisjunk - Purging negative people in our life is so very important. As you have pointed out, this is not always easy to do, especially when they are part of your family. I have lived with this my entire life and for most of it, I paid a very high price. When I made the decision to let go of this person, I felt a sense of relief and freedom. She is still in my life, but I no longer get caught up in her drama. I changed my thinking and it changed my life. Thank you!

Hello Jackie - Yes, we all sooner or later fall into feeling down. The important thing is to take immediate action by replacing the thought. I'm so glad you found this hub to be encouraging. I do hope many readers will find their way here. Thank you so much!

ChitrangadaSharon - With each hub that you write, it is obvious that you practice a positive life-style. I am attracted to your articles because of this. I seem to feel 'lifted' as I ponder what you have written.

I agree that positive thinking and living in the now is a challenge. But while we continue to work in this direction, our lives are happier. Thank you for your vote and especially for sharing. Others will be helped because you have taken the action to share. ~ Blessings ~ Audrey

Audrey...This hub is a winner from beginning to end. I am always dealing with that infamous half-full/half-empty glass of joy when going through each ordinary day (Great image on which to focus)....

Chasing away any possible negatives and welcoming that which is "positive," becomes easier, the longer we practice. The rewards are worthwhile.

Love the common sense strategies to help halt negative thinking.....I have put a few of these into action ....they work. For me, just interrupting a negative thought by saying to myself, "For heaven's sake....stop thinking the worst and turn it around, right now!" We just have to hope that few people catch us talking to ourselves!! LOL

Eckhart Tolle is an interesting and brilliant author of enormously helpful b0oks. I watched his intriguing interview with Oprah.

Following your suggestions may help one in some temporal ways; however, they do not resolve the issue of sin against a holy Creator. New Age "thinking" will never give one peace because it is built on the wrong foundation.

Oh dear. I'm afraid that before I accomplish anything else I need to get rid of the one person in my life who is unfailingly the most negative, can't-do, you're-making-a-fool-of-yourself person I've ever known. That would be me, and I suspect that to be the case for many or even most of us. Getting rid of that person (relax -- I'm speaking metaphorically!) means changing so many of the things I've been taught and have learned in the last 63 years that it's a daunting task.

I'm not even certain it's achievable at this late date.

Enters.... the daughter to the rescue.....

First of all, let me say this to vocalcoach; Knowing you as I really do, you have written another wonderful insightful hub that I have no doubt will be a great inspiration to some who read and apply it. With that said and done, I need to reply to the conversation between glynch1 and Lady Guinevere.

I LOVE reading comments when people have so much passion in what they believe and stand for. Isn't it wonderful that we live in today's society where we can voice our own thoughts and opinions? The sad thing is that when it takes a very positive message and turns it into a negative experience to all the others who visit the page in hopes to read something inspirational.

The conversation between you both has sadden my mom greatly in so that I have encouraged her to delete the conversation just between the two of you, but not your original comments to her regarding the hub.

For the record, this hub has not touched anywhere on religion OR new age thinking at all. It is SIMPLY a positive way to help ourselves delete those "negative" thoughts that we as humans tend to get occasionally (Some more than others) and suggestions on how we can do this. Meditation is one way (by the way... meditation is very healthy for the mind & body, a great stress release and yes, a form of communicating with nature, that higher power of which you may believe in) singing is another way and other ways that have been duly noted in this hub.

I believe that if two people have a strong opinion with each other which finds them attacking one another, it's best to address each other in private.

Lady Guinevere, I have loved your writings forever! and glynch1, I hope to learn more about you through your hubs.

Please let us all be mindful of our thoughts before we put them to paper... I know.... Let's SING!

Your comment says the hub has nothing to do with New Age philosophy at all; yet you call meditation "a form of communication with nature, that higher power . . . " First, seeking to communicate with nature is right out this philosophy/religion. Second, nature is not a "higher power" unless you equate nature with God. That belief amounts to pantheism. The true God created mankind to manage and rule over the rest of His creation. Third, the authors the hub cites (namely, Tolle and Dyer) are either New Age spirituality, self-help, self-actualization, or New Thought writers/speakers.

I did not personally attack Lady G; I only pointed out that following these New Age meditation methods will not obtain eternal salvation for her or anyone else who subscribes to them.

However, she did criticize Christianity, the Bible, and me; I was merely trying to convince her that she needed to acknowledge these attitudes. She also never sought to refute my argument that Christ is the only way to God; no method of positive thinking or meditation can deal with the issue of sin against a holy Creator.

My friend, you needed to read my comments more carefully.

I will not get in the same back and forth he said she said.. as for my comment.. I read my statement again and it should have said ...nature, OR that higher power that.. so that was my typo bad.. as for your back and forth comments to lady G. I perceived it as both of you attacking one another , again my perception as the conversation between you both did get heated. Either way, it was throwing a negativity light upon something that is a very positive thing. I have read and re-read your comments, however, this is not about what you, Lady G, myself, or anyone else believes, or whether anyone is right or wrong...this is about respect for the author and the those who do come to read the hub.

as for rereading hubs.. this hub needs to be reread as well. Have a great day my friend! ♥

Your perception of my conversation with Lady G is in error. I did not attack her (personally); I disagreed with her beliefs. She, on the other hand, denigrated the Scriptures and me.

I have no doubt that you believe your mother's hub was a "very positive thing." She included some helpful comments; however, the basis for her philosophy is very serious spiritual error. I do believe "this" is about truth. I believe in absolute truth; New Agers do not. If I read spiritual error, I must correct it with the truth of Scripture for the sakes of the author and of those who read it.

DeaverTex - Oh, my friend, it's achievable at any time. You've most likely been 'brain-washed' with negativity most of your life. It takes a strong desire, along with courage to begin changing our way of thinking. You are still young enough to begin an exciting path to positive thinking. I read a quote recently that I'd like to share with you. "Success is a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired - you quit when the gorilla is tired." This is kind of how we go about changing our thoughts.

I want to thank you for reading this hub Deaver. If I can help you in any way at any time just let me know. - Audrey

I want to tell you that I did use your positive thoughts and wrote my last hub about gardening instead of using negative thoughts towards the person here who attacked me. Thank you so much for this hub. It does work and I did enjoy writing my gardening hub very much. It took my mind off of negative things. HUGS!

"However, she did criticize Christianity, the Bible, and me; I was merely trying to convince her that she needed to acknowledge these attitudes. She also never sought to refute my argument that Christ is the only way to God; no method of positive thinking or meditation can deal with the issue of sin against a holy Creator."

That is only your perception and I did neither. Positive bring positive period and it has nothing to do with you as such in my or anyone else's life.

All this hub is saying is that if you stop the negative thoughts that come to mind such as: I doubt myself and I hate others and others are not as perfect as I am and also that I do not feel qualified to express my opinions or even as simple as I do not think that I can do such and such. Now replace them with FAITH and hope and visualize you doing those things that is bringing in a positiveness to your life. Those are hard to do once someone gets into others heads that they are always going to do bad and they must ask someone outside of themselves to do something that is totally within that person or individual. I will not banter scripture because this is NOT what this hub is about.

Love one another as thyself and do unto others as you would have them to unto you.....well that is in scripture but it is not only in that one book that is read.

Attitude begins within the person or individual. It does not come from something outside of oneself. Having a positive attitude for oneself is not being selfish.

Thanks for sharing such a detailed hub about positive thinking. It's true the way we think affects our physical and mental. I use to be very negative but in 2014 God has helped me to turn my negativity into positivity and whenever i get discourage I remember "Joseph Scriven" the man who wrote the words to the song. WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS, OH WHAT PEACE WE OFTEN FORFEIT ALL BECAUSE WE DO NOT CARRY EVERYTHING TO GOD IN PRAYER. I wrote a hub on it, its very interesting.

Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" has changed me radically. And I haven't even read the entire book due to his ponderous writing style.

Excellent advice on "How To Stop Negative Thinking" - I have practised it all and still do. As punishment for a negative thought, I had to replace it with 2 positive thoughts. That's when I've learned how to appreciate the feeling of sun rays on my bare arms.

Negative thoughts are the thieves of our peace and joy. We have to kill them before they kill us!

Carpe diem!

Excellent hub, Audrey.

Audrey, what a wonderful hub. I am familiar with Eckhart Tolle and his philosophy and works. Meditation is part of my life and it does wonders. Also, your suggestions and tips on thinking positive are spot on. I like your suggestion of just the word, stop! to get rid of negative thoughts. I had to chuckle at that because it is so simple to re-direct our thoughts. Thanks for reminding us what is important in this world and how to think only positive thoughts.

no body profile image

no body 2 years ago from Rochester, New York

I have often wondered how a person could be a "James Bond" and grow old and retire like some people I have read about and seen in magazines and on television. As well as people like the old west sheriffs and law men would know how to handle physical and mental stress on a moment's notice and then be cool and calm in the next. I know that stress mounts in the body and must be dealt with. I understand that mental rehashing or future envisioning cause the body to be overloaded. Yet in life things come at you in milliseconds and if you are to survive you have to be in a state of readiness. You have to be aware of your surrounding and ready to react if that change means danger. So a certain amount of adrenaline will be at the ready. That has to be damaging but I know when I am in a state of relaxation, I am in my good place with God. I am praying or singing or whatever the Spirit moves in me. If someone were to attack at that time or there was an emergency at that time, I am too "far away" to react to save myself or others. So I have to believe there is a "safe place" as far as stress factors go so you can be on the alert and yet be constantly sloughing off the excess stress out of your mind/body. I am not sure that is completely clear but it may be the only way I can say it. "A State Of Relaxed Readiness." What do you think?

I like your "replacing two positive thoughts for every negative thought."

Some days I walk around using the mental "stop" all day long. Those are the times I grow the most. It's an on-going process.

I agree that negativity is a thief of our peace and joy and thank you for adding this.

Thank you Martie for adding your own wisdom to this hub. I love your "carpe diem." Gives me such a boost for the day.

Excellent hub! Too often people lose sight of personal perspective. Although is it human to covet that they do not possess, unfortunately this can be an effort in futility that leads to demoralizing and destructive emotional outcomes. Thus, be appreciative of everything you have because there is someone wishing they had the basic desires of life - food and water, a safe place to rest at night, and people who care about them.

Dear Audrey,

Wow! I came here expecting to be uplifted and to learn new pearls of wisdom about the benefits of choosing positive thoughts and have to say you delivered both in this informative, upbeat hub.

I recently finished Dr. Wayne Dyer's "I Can See Clearly Now," and have read the other books you listed as resources and can see that you've taken some things from each of them, but also added your own unique viewpoint and tips about choosing positive thoughts and banishing negative ones.

And the last picture of your daughter to be, Jennifer Halenar, whom you dedicated this hub to, made me smile. She's beautiful and it's great that she shares your love and joy of music!

Am voting this up and sharing.

Hi Audrey - What a positive hub. It is so true that we must do self talk to get us out of any negative feelings. Sid Kemp, in his hub, says we can even look at an inspiring photo or painting to make our minds quiet. I do this all the time to make bad thoughts go away. Who wants bad thoughts? You brought all these ideas together in one hub with beautiful pics and video. You are an amazing lady, Audrey. It is so nice to know you. Sharing this hub that you shared with us. Blessings, Audrey

So very true! We have the power to control our thoughts and put positive thinking at the forefront. Sure, sometimes that is going to be easier than others, but it is possible. I like to wake up each morning and name out some things that I'm thankful for, such as having a roof over my head and a job that allows me to take care of myself. Great hub, Audrey. It's so real useful and knowledgeable. As for meditation, I've began to do mini meditations and one walking one to church, since I've been having a dry spell in the writing world of having no creative ideas to write a new novel. It's been this way for six months, since my mother died last March and when I had Shingles last summer. Any ideas on meditation and such?

vocalcoach profile image

vocalcoach 24 months ago from Nashville Tn. Author

Kristen - I'm sorry about the loss of your mother. This is very hard and you have my sympathy. When you meditate, try to completely empty your mind and just focus on the sound of OM as you breathe in and out. Visualize yourself writing easily and effortlessly like a non-stop fountain of water. Picture yourself as an ever-flowing waterfall full of sweet energy. The words pour from you on to your writing tablet. It's like you can't stop the words from flowing one after the other.

Do this repeatedly. Let me know what happens.

Create in your mind exactly what you want. Be precise and consistent.

Hugs to you Kristen. Thank you.
