Being happy with your life!
Happiness is such a transient emotion. No sooner have you realised that you are happy and then it is gone, as you search for the next thing you need or need to do to make yourself happy again.
At the risk of jinxing myself... I am happy! The last two years have been the happiest of my life. In this time I have ended one relationship, moved house, started another relationship, married and had a child. These are some of the most stressful things that one can do and I repeat... I am happy!
In order to be happy I believe that you must have the following 5 things:
· Someone to love
· Someone who loves you
· Something to do
· Something to look forward to
· Choices (but not too many!)
Everyone wants to belong part of belonging is “loving”. Loving someone and in turn having someone to love. Everyone really does want to “belong” even those that eschew relationships with people will cultivate relationships with pets or with God.
When you have something to do there is a purpose to life, again it speaks to wanting to belong this time to place as well as people. When you have something to do there is a reason to get up in the morning. Even if it is just to do the washing.
Having something to look forward to is also important. When our lives have monotony people become bored. The thing or event that you are looking forward to doesn’t even have to be particularly exciting just something different!
Finally there is nothing more hopeless than a person who has no choices. However this is a double edged sword too many choices paradoxically cause stress!
So when analysing happiness or your lack of it remember the 5 – 2 someone’s, 2 something’s and 1 choice!
