Best Diet For Hypoglycemia - Is Low Carb Diet The Way To Go?

There is a lot of misleading information on the best diet for hypoglycemia. If you are suffering from hypoglycemia, you will know what i am talking about. There are so many confusing advices on hypoglycemia diet and all of them seem to contradict each other.

Even among medical experts and professional dieticians, the opinions differ.  Amiss the confusion and chaos, popular low carb diet such as Atkins and South Beach may have led some people to believe that low carbs is the right way to go in managing your hypoglycemia.  

Is Low Carb Diet The Way To Go?

The truth is that a low carb diet can be FATAL for people with hypoglycemia.

Carbohydrates give us energy. They provide the necessary fuel for our body to function properly. Thus, our body NEEDS carbohydrates for energy. This is a fact.

I don't really care what dieticians or "diet experts" say, i prefer to trust my own feelings. If you have tried low carb diet such as Atkins, you will know what I am talking about; you will feel sluggish, tired, sleepy and disorientated all the time. Are those feelings normal and healthy? Obviously not!

Carbohydrates is necessary and they should comprise more than 50% of your diet, period! The trick here however, is to eliminate the "bad" carbs and keep the good ones.

"Good" Carbs VS "Bad" Carbs

"Bad" carbohydrates, more accurately known as simple carbohydrates or refined carbohydrates, are carbs that are quickly absorbed by the body, thereby raising sugar levels.

"Good" carbohydrates, also known as complex carbohydrates, take much longer time to be broken down and thus, release sugar slowly into the blood stream. This is the carbohydrates that you want in your hypoglycemia diet; carbohydrates that do not cause sudden peaks in your blood sugar level.

A few examples for complex carbohydrates are brown bread, vegetables and whole grains.

In order to recover from hypoglycemia, it is not necessary to remove carbohydrates from our diet. In fact, doing so can be detrimental to your health and aggravate your hypoglycemia.

Effective management of your hypoglycemia requires you to pay extra attention to your diet. There is no quick fix diet in beating hypoglycemia. More importantly, beware of diet "experts" or "gurus" who tell you to simply cut out an entire food group from your diet. The key here is to be discerning and build your own diet plan that you can tolerate. Learn how you can manage your hypoglycemia now!

I read your article and I must simply disagree.

Understanding the fact that some people get hypoglycemia for different reasons must be considered.

I will cover what I know best: Hyperinsulinism.

Simply put my body makes too much insulin!

I have researched all possibilities regarding diet how what seemed like anything and everything I ate would cause hypoglycemia. My best example in recent times was I ate a steak and Greek salad and I had a hypoglycemic crash a mere 75 minutes after eating. The meal contained no hidden sugars or simple carbohydrates as it was homemade right down to the salad dressing. So what could cause that with meat and vegetables all supposedly good foods for someone who has chronic hypoglycemic crashes.

I tried different a multitude of different things as well as worked with a nutritionist. But nothing helped with the hypoglycemia.

I later discovered that in order to reduce the amount of insulin for someone with hyperinsulinism is to eliminate insulin production. Insulin is activated in our body's at as little as 9g of carb per hour consumed. So I went on a low carb adventure.

Following the 2002 version of Atkins I followed a strict regimen of 20 g of carbs per day. And as described the first 3 days were tough lots of fatigue, sleepy, disorientated. But after that things turned around. Not only did my energy improve it became better then it was before!

And the best of all my hypoglycemic crashes -stopped-.

Now I know you mentioned that the body needs carbs, but I want you to consider two things.

1) On a low carb diet you are still consuming carbs just very few, and the only part of the body that -needs- carbs is your brain.

2) If you overeat carbs what does your body do with it? It turns it in to lipids or body fat. The body can undo that carb into fat creation and request from fat to give it the carb energy, what this means is your body uses it's own body fat to feed the body.

Now I know you mentioned that it could be fatal but in all reality anything and everything can be fatal such as drinking too much water.

When done properly Atkins should limit to a few carbs in the beginning to kick start lipidosis(transitioning the body from carb burning to the burning of fat). Then a gradual increase of carbs to include more variety of nutrition and weight maintenance. Atkins is a high fat diet but you must not eat trans fats as they help create bad cholesterol. The fats recommended are avocados, olive oil, dairy/butter, mayo, and some meat fats. The carbs consumed are not only low in carbs but high in fiber. Since fiber passes through the body with out triggering insulin or absorption it is considered a negative carb specifically they recommend 2 cups of leafy greens and 1 cup of other veggies for "induction". Induction is only the first two weeks or 20g of carbs a day, after induction you increase your carb count by 5g a week which works out to about a cup of veggies which they recommend you up.

If you continue to feel sluggish and tired on a low carb diet it may mean you need to increase your fat intake at meals/snacks.

Now what about that steak dinner and greek salad? Seemingly that would be a low carb meal but it wasn't. Unfortunatly the ingredients in a greek salad are: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, feta, olives and dressing. Tomatoes and onions actually have a high carb count combining with all the other ingredients the meal contained about 15 carbs, which is over the 9 carbs that insulin could be triggered at. Body over produces insulin then blood sugar drops rapidly then a hypoglycemic crash.

This explanation does not account for people that get low blood sugar because of consuming "bad" carbs, however a low carb diet may still be beneficial at removing the cravings for bad carbs.

Lynn, It is good that you are eating hihetaelr than ever. But the cheese and alfredo sauce are not good for you. Sure, it tastes great, but it's not healthy. You are so close, but eating added oils and fats is offsetting all the good you are trying to accomplish. I highly suggest you check out Dr. Esselstyn to see what you are doing to your endothelial cells. Then try Dr. McDougall's starch based diet. You can feel healthy and actually be healthy.
