Photochemotherapy Vitiligo Natural Treatment: Bishop’s Goatweed Medicinal Uses- Psoriasis Home Remedies Face & Hands
Bishop’s Weed or goutweed is a plant that is native to Egypt. It bears fruit that is valued as a medicine and is useful in treating psoriasis and vitiligo. The plant thrives once it receives adequate amounts of rainfall and the temperature is right, so it does well in countries in Europe and other areas, such as India.
A Vitiligo Story
Bishop’s Weed contains several active ingredients, including xanthotoxin. This extract from goutweed plays a vital part in the effect that the fruit has on people with skin conditions such as vitiligo and psoriasis.
How to Pronounce Xanthotoxin
Researchers have established that taking the fruit orally helps to improve pigmentation. People with patches of low pigmentation who ate certain quantities of the fruit and then stood outside in the sun for an hour afterwards were able to develop deep brown pigmentation in affected areas within a few days.
Of course, this was not as straightforward a process as it looks. After standing in the sun, patients developed burns in the leukodermic skin patches. These had to be treated by doctors. Patients had to endure swelling, oozing and other symptoms of sunburn before the skin healed and developed the same color as normal areas.
Psoriasis - What is it?
Exposure to ultraviolet light had the same effect. However patients only had to be exposed to UV light for just 2 minutes after using Bishop’s Weed or synthetic xanthotoxin so they experienced less irritation. This was long enough for these persons to see an improvement in their skin tone after they healed from the burns.
Under a doctor’s supervision, Bishop’s Weed may be used to help with psoriasis. It may serve as a suitable alternative to drugs like cyclosporine, which have been used to effectively treat psoriasis when it is taken orally. In fact, it is commonly thought of as one of the most effective forms of treatment for adults with this condition. Cyclosporine can also be applied directly to the skin via local injections.
Cyclosporine has been shown to contribute to kidney disease. The drug also causes high blood pressure in some patients and is suspected of triggering certain forms of cancer. Unlike Bishop’s Weed, cyclosporine has no effect when it is applied to the skin in an ointment.
