Bring It: P90X Day 23

P90X is an extreme workout created by Tony Horton. If you are looking to get into the best shape of your life, this might be the program you have been searching for. I am trying this program to see what results the average here (not the superstar athlete) can obtain from this workout. I want to test it - see if it works or if it is just another TV gimmick trying to get me to spend my hard earned cash. At the end of the 90 days, I should be a whole new person!

Bring It

It doesn't seem to matter how late I seem to put my son to bed, he seems to be waking up each day earlier and earlier. That does not work well for me. It means that my workout gets disrupted. Anybody who has kids knows how difficult it is trying to get something done with them completely under foot. Add working out to this scenario, and it is even more difficult. Not to mention, I was already a little nervous about this workout because it is the first time I had to done Core Synergistics with the P90X system.

So, today I had a little workout buddy. He didn't last long; in fact, he only got through the warm up. But at least he gave it a try. And, he also got a little underfoot. But, I was a little greatful for the distraction, because let me tell you - this was one tough workout!

This workout is going to be difficult for any average person. For me, because of my past issues with my stomach, this was even harder for me. I did what I could. I even found some of the exercises to be fun... in a sadistic kind of way. Overall, it was nice to have a change up.

Day 2 of Recovery week is over and done with. This workout will be done one more time this week. Right now, I am feeling it; I can't say I am looking forward to doing this twice.

So....

What do you think

Do you work out your core muscles?

What is Core Synergistics

Core Synergistics is all about that band in your mid section. It is about working out the core will incorporating your entire body. You will be touching on a little cardio, some stretching and even resistance training, all to get those core muslces into a strong foundation.

This program is incorporated into the P90X workout for many reasons. It is meant to improve your flexibility, balance and coordination, but overall, will help improve your ability to do all the other workouts in this program. Core synergistics is all about total-body development. With a strong core, you will be less likely to suffer injury and you will be able to expose that six-pack you have always wanted!

This workout is an hour long, typical of most P90X workouts. While you will be throwing in a few variations of pushups and squats in there, you will also be introduced to a few new exercises as well. One of my favorite (and one heck of a good core strenghtener) is the Banana Roll.

Oh Bananas!

Putting your body in a position that resembles a banana is a great way to work the entire midsection.
Putting your body in a position that resembles a banana is a great way to work the entire midsection.

The Banana Roll is an odd type workout, but it will hurt - in a good way. To do this exercise, you lie on your back, with your amrs stretched straight out about 6 to 12 inches off the floor. This will have your body resembling the curve in a banana. Stay in that position for about 5 seconds. Roll to the side, hold; roll to your stomach, hold; roll to your other side, hold; roll onto your back into the original starting position and hold. That is one rep and you should do the entire thing while maintaining form. Repeat the process.

Another variation of this is the Superman Banana. Start on your back in a "banana position" and roll all the way over onto your stomach maintaining form so you are in a superman position. Both exercises are great for the entire core workout. Try it. You might find it fun!

My thoughts

Overall, this really is a great muscle. I can even feel my six pack starting to explode out. To bad it is covered by a few layers of fat. But hopefully, with all that I have been doing, this is just another way to melt the stuff off and start really showing off how strong this body really is.

This workout, like I said earlier, is difficult for me. Since I had surgery on my stomach, I have to be really careful with the abdominal workouts that I do. Therefore, I did what I could, but I didn't push it. I have learned from experience that if I work out my midsection too hard, I will be out for the count for several days. To avoid injury, I did modify some of the moves to fit my needs. Feel free to do the same, especially if you are just starting.

Remember, when it comes to working out, it is best to keep moving. If you can't do a particular exercise, do your best and try again later. The point is, we want to stay away from injury. Pushing yourself harder than what your body can handle will only set you back. I stress this, because this workout is very difficult. I had to modify, and I don't feel any shame in saying that. Remember, this is an extreme workout.

Good luck on getting your workout in today! Together, we can have a party with all those six-packs!

lol... the banana huh... sounds like a fun move. I was wondering how well you were going to handle the core workouts, but remember you need to keep working on the core even if you can't push yourself! The core is THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only is the core the most important area of your body to help you maintain correct posture and avoid injury it helps you everyday without ever being recognized. I mean can you imagine trying to stand up straight if you had zero core muscles? lol... you'd flop all over the place. Plus you would risk great injury to your back and spine. Furthermore the core is the built in fat burner of your body. Even if you are super muscular everywhere else the core will burn the most fat if it is in shape! The core is what tightens up your metabolism and allows you to keep the weight off! People with a strong powerful core are always the ones that can eat anything they want without gaining a pound. In your case you just need to work on the core a little bit at a time and let the muscles build at a proper rate for you. The results are always worth the extra time! Which you of course know because you are spending all the time doing this ;-) Keep all the health benefits in mind and you can't lose! Great job :-)

@Myth - that is some great motivation. Maybe that is why I have always had a hard time losing weight... because my core muscles have been cut into. I did what I could with this workout - I will try again -- I believe it is Friday! I actually don't mind the workout - I just have a real hard time keeping good form because of my stomach. Overall, I know they are tightening up and it will take time because I have to go at a slower pace. And evne though I have been doing the entire P90X workout, the abdominal exercises are the ones I haven't included. Usually you do those 3 times a week and becuase of my poor muscles - I can't do them. I tried. Maybe next phase I will get more into the core workouts. Maybe I won't do the extreme workout - but I should at least do some Ab workout 3 times a week. But today - because I couldn't handle all of the moves - I pulled out my sports hula hoop. I forgot how much fun that thing was! LOL

Thanks for the encouragement. YOu stopping by and egging me on each and every day is probably the reason why I am still writing about each workout! Thanks for the extra push!

@Hyphenbird - if working out was like pregnancy I am going to have this world skinny in no time... you know - sympathy weight loss! LOL

I am glad that I have motivated myself to work out by writing. This idea was brillliant and I should have thought to do this ages ago. I can honestly say - if I was being held to writing about it every day - I probably wouldn't have made it this far. And for everybody that keeps stopping and pushing me - they are the true heroes. They have kept me going! I am super appreciative to the support and the feedback.

Awww.. I'm just so proud of you! I know how hard this is and for you I know how easily you can give up. I am going to be with you until the end!!! I want you to be successful. I remember how you feel about the way you looked during Jenny's wedding and I do not want you to have the same memories of Cassie's wedding (not that I believe you would because you look fine no matter what!) Keep up the good work!!

@Myth - I am going to keep pushing on. What can I say, I am super motivated with this right now. I will look good for Cassie's wedding because this time it is in my control. Besides - don't we have a little friendly competition going on that we started... oh... back in March! Not only is this good for me, but it is good for you. I feel like you are getting a little extra motivation from this as wel! :)

Yes indeed our friendly competition is coming up... but I think you won with this P90 stuff! I haven't lost a single pound in like 2 1/2 months. I just hit a wall and idk how I'm going to change it because I've changed up my routines and nothing has occurred still. For me a lot of it is stress and that won't change until after christmas is over (that is when I get my financial aid check!) and since my hormones are out of whack I'm not thinking I will be very successful... but we are still on! lol. Keep me motivated girl :-)

@Myth - I was just thinking... I have noticed the pounds haven't been flying off me either. I wonder if you... and I both... killed our metabolisms. The reason I am saying this was because I was watching this show about the 600 pound woman (not that the show should make me think of either of us) But she was only eating one meal a day. The doctor ended up redoing her whole diet. I am horrible with diet and don't eat the way I should, often times skipping breakfast and hardly eating until supper. It just got me thinking - if I killed my metabolism, it doesn't matter how hard I work, my body is in starvation mode all the time. That will difinately not help me any. I need to start making it a point to eat breakfast. And I know your eating habits. You should to, because I know how much you love food. I wonder if that is half the problem here. Your thoughts?

Oh yeah - and if you are feeling stressed - try doing some meditation. Even if you can only do it for 5 minutes a day, it might help ease the tension a little and drop your stress levels. If you have too much coritsol running through your body, it is only going to hurt your progress. Good luck - I am going to beat you with my motivation stick! LOL

@Real - I believe you are very right... those fingers there are getting a decent workout every day you stop by. And mentally, I am working those muscles for you as well.

I loved the picture of Max - took me for to get it so he looked like he was marching - kept catching him with his foot down. Luckily, it was only the warm up so I didn't miss too much. Now - if only he would have done the banana roll - that would have been funny. However, he did jump on me making it more difficult for me to do! But hey - 30 extra pounds - I was pushing hard! LOL

Yes I know that my metabolism is dead... I really do need to start eating right somehow! I just don't know how to do it. I mean I can make myself do pretty much anything, but for some reason dieting is just not one of those things. I think what I need to do is literally write up my personal menu every week and just stick to it no matter what! I like lists after all and that might be what it takes. The unfortunate part is rebuilding your metabolism is not easy! First off you have to start small... start by eating a yogurt for breakfast EVERYDAY! Once you have that down add something like a piece of fruit. By that point you should be eating an equivalent of about one egg and can try switching it up and eating an egg for breakfast. By that point you can start mixing it up by eating an egg with a piece of fruit or with a yogurt or even a piece of bread. You can continue like this until you have a decent sized breakfast of about 700 calories! If you do it too fast your metabolism will be confused and all it will do is force you to gain weight because you will be eating extra calories. Furthermore you have to remember that breakfast is supposed to be your biggest meal of the day once your metabolism is rebuilt! It is time to take care of yourself and that includes your eating which I know is sporadic just as much as mine is! Eating again is exactly what we need to do!

I am super stressed, but meditating doesn't work right now because every time I try I start thinking about all the stuff I do. Actually meditating doesn't usually work for me because the moment I start I have the urgent need to make lists and to double check everything and whatnot. That is why I do pilates because it is meditating with out the ability to think! lol. Right now nothing is helping though. I have a feeling nothing will help until I am done with grad school and working. I need that life and I want it more everyday. Does not do well for my stress levels ;-) But keep beating me with your stick and maybe I will still be somewhat successful! lol

I hear you about the food. My problem is I usually eat breakfast, but sometimes it gets really late. I get distracted because I am waking up, making 3 lunches, getting the kids off to school and trying to get my workout in. The workouts themselves are at least an hour long, by the time I get around to breakfast - it is almost 10. I would eat before, but I don't want to end up throwing up mid workout because my stomach was too full. But maybe I should be doing a light snack beforehand. Hmmmm - I am going to have to think on this stuff.

As for the meditating... it takes great practice to clear your head. I would keep trying if you can because once you get there, it feels great. I have a hard time doing it as well because I am always thinking of stuff as well. But, maybe you can think about breakfast! ;)

barbergirl28, Pre-made protein shake have helped me so much in losing weight. I have run out the door to work each morning. That is one reason why I love my hair so much BIG TIME SAVER!! I so need a trim. Keep up the good work

@Susan - Thanks so much for the tip. For awhile I have always had Slimfast on hand. Not because I was following the diet plan, but because they were quick and easy. But, it seemed like they changed something and they no longer stuck with me. After about 20 minutes I was hungry again, so I stopped getting them. Maybe I need to do that again just so I can get in a preworkout snack and jump start my metabolism!

BTW - get out there and get a trim - these workouts are sweat inducing. I felt like I just grabbed my clothes from the washing machine and put them on by the time I was done. Got to love that KenpoX :)

Better to modify than not do it at all...I too have a hard time figuring out how to fit in eating if I work out early in the morning. Not only do I not have time to eat before my very early class but I wouldn't know what to eat that wouldn't make me ill while working out.

barbergirl28 profile image

barbergirl28 5 years ago from Hemet, Ca Author

@Danette - Very good point. I am still beating myself up a little about this workout because so much of it I can't really do. Hopefully when it gets introduced after phase 2 I will be much stronger and be able to fully do this video. It has put me in a bit of pain and the workout was twice this week, so I am hoping when I go into the new phase I will be feeling much better.

As for eating before your workout, I feel you on that one. I did try a banana one morning and I didn't get ill. So maybe I need to stock up on bananas for before my workout. If you find something that works for you, I would love to hear it! :)
