Cancer Causes and Prevention

One of the deadliest disease on planet earth; few years back I had no knowledge of its causes, symptoms, and cure or in other words I was never bothered to know about it. Cancer was like a taboo and it is still a taboo in some parts of Pakistan. In rural areas people who get diagnosed with cancer never go for the treatment because in their point of view cancer is an unmentionable term and those who are suffering from it must have done some sin in their life as a result of which they get infected from this disease. The loss a cancer patient suffers through in his/her life is devastating. As I observed the sufferings of some people in my life and nursed them I got a chance of understanding the physical, emotional, psychological and social stress they went through. This forced me to write something on it that can help others who are looking for information regarding cancer. As I am not a doctor this information is not based on any research but it is based on my observations.

Prevention is better than Cure: We all agree with it but still make so many mistakes in life that in long run we have to suffer their consequences. It is said that we are what we have done in our teenage life; that is definitely true. Following are few tips that can help prevent many risks in later part of life:

·                    Give awareness to your children regarding their eating habits, exercise, posture, leisure activities and so on. Sooner they will become aware, the better they will safeguard themselves from many of problems in later life.

·                    Drinking, smoking, and other forms of tobacco are most carcinogenic in nature. There are other things from which you can substitute these things: take herbal teas instead even if you get addicted to them, there is no harm.   

·                    Make it your habit, a routine check of body functioning with your physician. A laid-back attitude is not safe to adapt.

·                    Cover your face from the harmful effect of rays while you are out in the sun or else use a good quality sunscreen but still covering the face and other body part is the best thing.

·                    Tie into the sacred marriage knot as soon as you get mature rather than having several sexual partners.

·                    Make your children well informed about the pros and cons of every thing in their use.

·                    Avoid stresses to minimum: during stress take a walk; share your worries with your close relationships; vomit out your anger by even breaking a porcelain saucer but don’t let it upset your mind and nerves; never become too much overwhelmed with small problems in life, think of today not tomorrow.  

·                    Love your relationship to pass a healthy, balanced life.  

Diet:

There are many researches that support different food to be good in treating or minimizing the cause of the growth of carcinogens in body. Below is a list of some food items which have been tested again and again and proved to be very effective in treating or preventing cancer.

·        Soybean

Soybean is another super food. It is a combination of several nutrients. It has lots of minerals including zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron. In one of the research a comparative study was made between people who eat soy in their routine life and those who don’t and it was found that people who eat soy suffered less from cancer or had less chances of developing it.

·        Pomegranates

Pomegranates are very rich in antioxidants and in recent years pomegranates have took great concern as an extremely healthy fruit. In some of the researches it has been proved that people who take pomegranate in their routine have less chances of suffering from cancer. They are also very effective in lowering cholesterol level.

·        Walnuts

Previously people thought that walnuts are rich in cholesterol and therefore they are not fit for especially heart patients. In recent researches it has been proved that walnuts are the best source of vitamin E, which is proved to be very effective for fighting cancer. It is also rich in magnesium and fiber; those who are suffering from constipation should take them in routine as fiber will prevent constipation. Chronic constipation at times becomes one cause of cancer.

·        Green Tea

Green tea is one of the most talked about beverage now-a-days. Its benefits are endless. It is full of polyphenols which are also antioxidants. The caffeine content in green tea is much less a compared to black tea and coffee that makes it safer to drink.

Other than this garlic, cabbage, broccoli and olives are also rich in antioxidants. Vegetables are a gift of God to us. Eat variety of vegetables because each vegetable contain different antioxidant; in fact, vegetables in different color should be eaten because each color has its own nutritional value that provides different health benefits.

This is not the end eat healthy, eat in moderation then eat anything. Try to eat everything including meat poultry and fish, milk and dairy, pulses and beans, vegetables and fruits etc. God has created all of these things to eat, so don’t become too much choosy but eat in moderation.

Emotional Stress & How to overcome it:

The patient is in need of emotional backup from family so love her/him. Treat her/him as much normal as possible. Fulfill his/her emotional needs that will do much good. In one of the research it has been proved that living under continuous emotional stress can increase the chances of developing cancer. While in cancer patients too much stress can mean reduction in the effectiveness of treatment.

Psychological Problems:

In cancer patients mental pressures are endless. They all the time think about their disease and whether or not it will be overcame. This poses another problem for the patient and the family member. The best solution is that never leave the patient alone for long time. Accompany her/him as much as possible. Listen to his/her problems and show your concern for solving them by any means. Indulge the patient in some healthy activity; don’t ask him/her to lay down all the time e.g.; ask her to make a cup of tea for you or discuss with her/him your work or educational problems and ask for her help. Let him/her do what he wants to. Don’t even show too much concern as this will make him think that he is very ill and cannot survive. Be positive in front of him/her so that he can also think positively.  

Social Stresses & Needs:

In many of the under developed countries people treat cancer patients as taboos and those suffering from cancer in return never tell their friends and neighbors what they are suffering from. In Pakistan several thousand females die every year just from breast cancer their families never take them to hospitals for treatment after getting diagnosed and these women die quietly. Social stresses; therefore, are very common in such countries. In such situation close family members like spouse, siblings, parents or children are the only support. They can help building morale of the patient, especially for further treatment. As cancer treatments are as hard as the disease in itself. During treatment too many patients loose confidence and quit it, which indeed means no cure. Only close family members can build self esteem in patient and make him/her think positively for the treatment.   

Physical Health:

During primary stages patient do not feel much pain or aches only in very advanced stage he/she feels the loss but then it is too late. Cancer is deadly because it is a silent killer in many cases patient get aware of cancer when it is in last stage and then it is useless to cry over spilt milk. Few lucky ones know about their cancer in the first stage and even then they are only lucky if they get proper treatment and get rid of it. That is why it is important to have annual or bi annual checkups of your body to safeguard yourself to maximum level. A cancer patient should have very healthy diet because carcinogenic cells growth causes weakness and make the body frail; which in turns, leads to many other diseases.

Spiritual Needs:

Ask forgiveness from God always, not only when you are sick. Make prayer your habit and don’t miss it in the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life. Trust and hope in God is the best way to be healthy and feel healthy.
