How Does Cancer Insurance Compare to Regular Health Insurance?

It is important to recognize that insurance for cancer is not a substitute for regular health insurance but rather a complement to it. Cancer insurance provides extra coverage that regular insurance might not completely cover.

Insurance Comparison: Cost

Cancer insurance is typically much less expensive than regular health insurance simply because it specifically covers only cancer. For the potential coverage, it can be cost effective to consider cancer insurance.

Insurance Comparison: Coverage

Health insurance provides coverage for a wide variety of medical expenses, including cancer, but cancer insurance adds more coverage relating to all the expenses involved in cancer treatment. Sometimes the medical expenses for treating cancer can go beyond the coverage offered by regular health insurance. In these situations cancer insurance provides the extra coverage keeping you from spending thousands on important treatments.

Insurance Comparison: Can they Coexist

When Comparing Cancer insurance to health insurance, specifically look and make sure the two policies can complement each other and do not exclude. Some insurance policies have peculiar exclusions that make it useless to have both cancer and health insurance. Always check that both will provide coverage and will coexist together.

What to Consider When Looking for Cancer Insurance

Here are a few things one should keep in mind when looking for cancer insurance. These may be more factors that are specific to your situation and these are meant to be a basic outline in guiding your consideration and decision making when looking for insurance.

Read the Details – this is vital when considering cancer insurance. Read the details, and then read them again. Make sure you understand what the cancer insurance will cover compared to your regular health insurance. Make sure the two will complement each other and do not exclude each other. Look for hidden costs or anything the cancer insurance does not cover. Look at limitations in coverage and specific dollar amounts for various procedures and expenses. Don’t buy cancer insurance if you do not know what you are getting.

Evaluate the Cost – although cancer insurance is generally less expensive than health insurance, it still costs money. When considering your options, evaluate the actual cost to you of cancer insurance and if you have the means to pay for it versus the likelihood of getting cancer. If cost of cancer insurance is much easier to pay for than the chance of expensive medical bills, than it might be right for you.

Are You at Risk – certain people are more at risk of cancer than others. There are a few factors that affect this including age and family history. Cancer is more likely to occur in people 55 and older and those who have a history of cancer in their family. If you fit these criteria, cancer insurance may be beneficial to you.

Upgrading Current Health Insurance – Instead of buying cancer insurance, it may be more beneficial for some to simply upgrade their current health insurance. This may be most beneficial for those who are less likely to need cancer treatment or have other important health concerns. As always, carefully look at the costs and benefits of upgrading or changing your current health insurance plan.

Most People Actually Do Not Need It – the reality about cancer insurance is that for many people, it is not necessary. Cancer insurance provides specific coverage for those who become diagnosed with cancer. Most regular health insurance plans will actually cover some or most of the costs. Be sure to check your current policy and evaluate if you actually need the extra coverage cancer insurance will provide.

Limitations on Cancer Insurance – it is important to note that most if not all cancer insurance plans do not cover those who are currently in need of cancer treatment. It is only available to those who think they may need the coverage if they happen to get cancer in the future. If you currently have cancer, or have had it in the past, you may not be able to get insurance for cancer.

The Bottom Line About Cancer Insurance

Cancer insurance is not for everyone, but in some situations it can be very useful and beneficial. It is important for you to evaluate your own situation, research and seek advice from others if you think you might benefit from cancer insurance.
