Candid B Cream: Uses and Side Effects

Candid B cream
Candid B cream

What is Candid B Cream or Lotion?

Candid B is a medicine you apply to your skin to help treat inflamed fungal skin infections like ringworm and jock itch, both of which are caused by the same fungus.

It's made of a combination of active ingredients, which are:

  • Clotrimazole — This is an azole antifungal that stops fungus from growing.
  • Beclomethasone diproprionate — This is a strong corticosteroid that relieves symptoms of the infection, including swelling, redness, and itching.

The same active ingredients are found in Lotrisone (US) or Lotriderm (Canada).

Uses of Candid B Treatment (Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate)

Candid B has a wide variety of uses. In its lotion form, it can be used to treat:

  • Ringworm of the foot (tinea pedis; athlete's foot) — Symptoms include itching, stinging, and burning between the toes and on the soles of the feet, blisters that itch, and cracking and peeling skin on the feet.
  • Ringworm of the groin (tinea cruris; jock itch) Symptoms include itching and pain in the groin area; a rash on the groin, skin folds, inner thighs, or buttocks; a distinct edge to the rash that may be scaly or have bumps that look like blisters; and a red-brown color in the center of the rash.
  • Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis) Symptoms include dry, brittle hair or hair loss in patches (if it's on the scalp), severe itching, or a red-ringed patch of small blisters or scaly skin.
  • Yeast infection (external vaginal use only; there are Candid B pills for vaginal insertion, or oral treatments as well) — Symptoms include burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina and the vulva, pain when passing urine, pain during sex, soreness, and a thick, white vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese and does not have a bad smell.

Candid B is not very effective in for widespread fungal infections on the body. For those, you'll need to take oral anti-fungal medication. It is also not very effective at treating infections of the nails.

For vaginal infections, Candid B can be applied on the outside of the vagina to relieve itchiness. For the inside of the vagina, you'll need to treat it with vaginal anti-fungal preparations or oral anti-fungal medication.

Sometimes (especially in Asian countries), unmarried girls are not prescribed vaginal antifungal preparations that are inserted into the vagina because it can affect the hymen. Instead, they are prescribed oral anti-fungal medications such as Fluconazole.

How to Use Candid B Cream or Lotion

Be sure to read any information about the medication that your doctor has given you or that comes with the packaging. If you've been prescribed the medication, follow your doctor's instructions exactly.

WARNING: Do not use on people under 17 years of age, since there is a greater chance of the medication penetrating the skin and entering the bloodstream. Do not put the cream inside of your vagina.

Directions:

  • Only use this medication on the skin.
  • Clean and thoroughly dry the area to be treated.
  • Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area and gently rub in, usually twice daily (in the morning and evening) or as directed by your doctor.
  • Wash your hands after using the cream unless you are using it to treat the hands.
  • Do not wrap, cover, or bandage the area unless directed to do so by your doctor.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes after applying the medication to the groin area.
  • Do not miss a dosage or an application. The key to eradicating the infection is consistent application over a set length of time. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. If it's already time for the next dose, continue application as normal.

The dosage and length of treatment depends on the type of infection being treated.

Ringworm or jock itch is usually treated for two weeks, and athlete's foot is usually treated for four weeks. Do not use more than 45 grams of the cream or 45 milliliters of the lotion per week unless directed and closely monitored by your doctor.

If the infection persists after these lengths of time, consult a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings for Using Candid B Cream

  • Applying the cream over a large area of the body, using a higher dose of the cream than prescribed or recommended, or using the cream more often than prescribed or recommended can all increase the likelihood and severity of side effects.
  • Do not apply the cream to the eyes, mouth, or to the inside of the vagina.
  • This treatment should not be used for children younger than 17 years, or on geriatric patients who have very thin skin, since the medicine could enter the bloodstream and cause adverse reactions.
  • Be sure to use the full recommended dosage of medication, even if the infection or your symptoms seem to have gone away.
  • Be sure to inform your doctor if your condition worsens or does not improve after one week of treatment for jock itch or ringworm or two weeks of treatment for athlete's foot.
  • If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, be sure to ask your doctor about using Candid B because its effects on infants are unknown.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to clotrimazole or betamethasone or to other azole antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole) or corticosteroids (e.g. triamcinolone).
  • Also, tell your doctor if you have any other allergies. This product contains inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
  • Always give your physician a full medical history so he or she can make sure you get the correct medication that you need.

Side Effects of Candid B Cream

Most people using this product do not experience extreme side effects. If your side effects are worse than the original problem, then you should tell a doctor and stop using the medication.

The most common side effects at the area of application include:

  • Redness
  • Tingling
  • Dry skin
  • Stinging
  • Blistering
  • Peeling
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Burning

If any of these side effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

  • Extreme hair growth
  • Skin thinning or discoloration
  • Acne
  • Stretch marks
  • "Hair bumps" (folliculitis)

Unusual Extreme Side Effects of Candid B

Rarely, this medication is absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. This can lead to side effects of too much corticosteroid. These side effects are more likely to occur in children, and in people who use this medication for a long time or over large areas of the skin, which is why these behaviors are not recommended.

Tell your doctor right away if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Unusual or extreme tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Headache
  • Swelling of the ankles or feet
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Vision problems

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:

  • Rash
  • Itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat)
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

When Should Candid B Not Be Used?

Candid B should not be used when these other conditions are present or to treat these conditions:

  • Acne
  • Open or infected wounds
  • Black heads
  • Carbuncles or Furuncles
  • Bacterial abscesses
  • Warts
  • Herpes
  • Broken skin at the site of the rash
  • Skin infections near the rash

Using this preparation for the above conditions will make them worse.

If the hair lost is due to fungus infection, then it could help. Patchy hair loss can be due to fungal infections, but it could result from other causes as well.

This cream cured some infection near my waist linebut has caused a scar at the waistline. I thought it might be due to dettol.

Its been 3 years and not gone. Any remedy to remove scar?

I am trying Aloe-Vera.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Dear Rahul

Thanks for reading and commenting,

Candid B usually do not cause scarring. However, some fungal infections can cause scarring. It is difficult to treat scars with medications. It is especially difficult to suggest anything without seeing you. Therefore, you can get an opinion from a dermatologist.

I have a small about 2 inch long and an inch thick inflation kind of rash on my left bum, its itchy and and gets dry skin which can b peeled off while scratching. Can candid b help me cure such disease, its irritating.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Dear Ravi

It is difficult to give you a proper diagnosis with that information. But the possibilities are fungal, bacterial, inflammatory (eczema type) or psoriasis.

If it is fungal and inflammatory then it will respond to this medication.

However, if there is a bacterial infection going on then it will not cure (sometimes aggravate) it.

Sometimes fungal infections can get secondarily infected with bacteria and applying Candid B will worsen the bacterial infection and can even cause spreading of it.

I hav fungal infections on my head n i've tried all means to get rid of it, but no changes at all. I've applied almost 60% of all available creams n shampoos, took 2 types of different drugs for 2 different months, as a write this now i'm not yet well still. Though am still using candid B. I'll apreciate your assistance. Thanx.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Dear ronnie,

If it is so resistant, then the diagnosis might be wrong. You might have something else such as alopecia areata. Other possibility is not using the medications as instructed. It can develop resistance.

Usually drug resistant fungal infections are very rare. You need to be treated by an experienced dermatologist.

It is difficult to say what it is without seeing the lesion. By the description from you it is unlikely due to a fungal infection. Therefore, Candid B would not help you.

Dear anitta

This could be a bacterial infection. Therefore, may not respond to Candid B.

You need something like Mupirocin cream.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Dear Sylvai

This could be due to a side effect of candid b. Usually it is temporary. But if it is persisting and your vagina is getting red then get medical opinion (rarely this could be an allergic reaction to the medication).

i have white disharge. can i apply candid cream? and how gto apply it?

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

I assume that you have whitish vaginal discharge. Whitish vaginal discharge can be due to vaginal candidiasis or bacterial vaginosis. Vaginal candidiasis can definitively helped by applying Candid B cream outside the vagina. But it should be supplemented by vaginal antifungal tablets (tablets that are inserted into the vagina). But these are not suitable for virgins due to obvious reasons. For them oral antifungal medications are effective.

For bacterial vaginosis steroids in Candid B would help. But it is controversial.

15yr old gal 4 years ago

yes i am a virgin and i take homeopathic meds for my white discharge (liquid , viscous and foul smelling , sticky makes my clothes dammp) but as i am out of those and am currently inable to get them, for a moth or so, I have to get an alternative. A person recommended Candid, ( Not Candid B, but Candid, on the box next to Candid is a red flower, i do not know if it is the same) and I bought the cream. But I wish to know if it is safe and how to apply it. I don't know about the antifungal meds. Is it safe to not have those while applying Candid cream?

P.S.: The cream I bought is this one: http://www.procanadadrugs.com/media/catalog/produc...

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Candid cream contain only the anti fungal med Clotrimazole. Unlike Candid B it does not contain steroid (Betamthazone).

It is a safe medication to apply.

Hey! I hav a whitish thick discharge with a very bad smell and my vagina is itchy. Can candid b and the vaginal antifungal tablets help both at the same time? How long should i use them

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Yes they both will help. In fact it is advised to use both the medications at the same time. Generally it depends on the type of vaginal tablets you use. Please read http://hubpages.com/health/Candid-V1-V3-V6-usage-a...

15yr old gal 4 years ago

Okay, thanks..!! Could you tell me how to apply it?

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

You can apply around and just inside the vaginal mouth, after washing with mild soap (baby soap). It is better to apply it thrice daily. However, vaginal candidiasis should be ideally treated with oral or vaginal tablets in combination with local cream preparations.

ruth 4 years ago

I have thrush n i was given candid b and candida v3 but then got this irritation and went back to the hospital and i was given polygynax,a capsule n candid b are they safe to use in pregnancy

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

It depends on the trimester of your pregnancy. In first trimester it is better to avoid these drugs. But in third trimester, bacterial vaginitis should be treated, otherwise it will cause infections in the newborn. Therefore, benefits outweigh risks in third trimester, so it is better to take them.

You need to stop using creams containing steroids. After stopping them your skin will become normal in due course. There is no specific cure for this side effect.

Hope this helps

hai sir,

i have pimple on butteks and its very pain , shall i apply candid b cream

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Candid B will not work on pimples. You need to apply anti acne preparation. Sometimes this lesion might need oral antibiotics. Infections in buttocks can sometimes cause problems because there is loose tissues inside the buttocks and it will result in spreading infection. Therefore, i would recommend you to meet a doctor.

Nag25 4 years ago

I have tinea cruris and my doctor advised me to use candid - B for 1month daily 3 times. Now , he advised me to use candid cream and candid powder.

My question is how to apply these two? Is it necessary to clean 3 times before applying.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

use candid cream on the skin and powder on the sweaty areas such as loins and axilla.

It is recommended to clean the affected area before applying. So if you are applying thrice then you need to clean the area thrice per day.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

If it is red, hot and painful then it could be due to bacterial infection. Candid B does not work on bacterial infections. It is difficult to recommend something without seeing the lesion. Therefore, it is better to show it to a doctor.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Dear sarah

Candid B should be used only in fungal infections complicated with inflammation. Even though steroids have skin whitening effect it is not recommended for that purpose. Long term application can cause skin thining. For skin whitening hydroquinone and isotretinoin can be used . But these are prescription only drugs and ideally prescribed by dermatologists.

i have an iching problem in my vegina... it is good to use candid -b....and there is any saideffects of this cream

njmanura profile image

njmanura 4 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Dear Kushboo

Candid B is for inflamed fungal infections. Vaginal itchiness may be due to many causes. One of this is fungal infections. In addition, vaginal candid infections need oral anti fungal medication (if you consider virginity is important) or anti fungals inside vagina (Candid V3).

You can try it. Side effects are mainly in long term use. You can apply it and see. If it responds, you can apply for at least two weeks. However. it is always better to get a doctor's advice. But the response may be temporary if you do not use intravaginal or oral antifungals.

Jot

It seems you are suffering from candid infection of the vagina. It should be treated by an doctor after seeing you. But you can use Candid B for external vaginal area and if you are married then Anti fungal (e.g. Candid V1, V3, V6) vaginal tablets. If you are worried about virginity then you can take oral anti fungal medication such as Fluconazole. Fluconazole is a prescription only medication. It should be remembered that using candid cream alone will not treat vaginal candidiasis.

In addition, you need to clean or boil your undergarments or use new undergarments because it can reinfect. Your sexual partner is also need to use anti fungals in his/her genitals. Unless he/she also can reinfect you.

i have been using candid b for three years and more on my face . it made my skin bleached. Now i could not stop it as it makes my skin itchy, full of acne, pimples and rough even i stop it for two days. i am a college student and its withdrawal effects are so severe, i can't go to my college ugly so i didn't stop using it. Its three years now i completed my studies and im on leave now i thought of quiting its usage but my skin have gone dark, itchy all over the spot i have applied before, black round patches all over my face and neck. Now iam so depressed and i locked myself inside a room. i can't stop using it as it causes severe effects and i can't continue as this may cause dangerous effects permanantly. what can do now I am so worried and depressed that i lost my original skin. please help doctor i am so depressed.

I think your depression is needed to be addressed first. In addition, you need to be treated by a qualified dermatologist. It is better if you could meet a psychiatrist then discuss your issues, then he/she will refer you to a dermatologist if needed. I am sorry, but your problem cannot be discussed in an internet forum. You need to be seen by a qualified doctor.

Vaginal fungal infection need to be treated with intravaginal antifungals or oral anti fungals, because treating only outside the vagina would not help.

I'm diabetic and have had thrush problem ever since, i have been using Candid B it helps for a while but the problem is back once stopped. I hate this can't there be a permanent solution?

njmanura profile image

njmanura 3 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

First, your diabetes should be under control, because infections do not settle when the diabetes is not controlled. Diabetes suppresses immunity. Second, there may be reinfection of the fungus. Therefore, it is advisable to properly wash cloths (some advocate to boil undergarments and cloths) and dry them in direct sunlight (to destroy the spores). In addition, treating your sexual partner for fungal infection reduces the chance of reinfection.

If it is a fungal infection then candid b will help. Do not apply if there is bacterial infection (red wound with pus). Do not apply for open wounds. You can look at how fungal infections on skin look like by doing a google search. following webmd article will give help to understand what is a fungal skin infection. http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/...

You need to take oral anti fungal tablets such as Fluconazole 150mg. But they are usually prescription only. In addition, following hygiene tips for preventing reinfection is important. They are mentioned in previous comments.

Ruby,

You can use Candid B, but you need to take oral anti fungals to completely cure candidiasis. In addition, you need to follow clean/boil your undergarments and cloths to prevent reinfection. Usually Fluconazole 150mg daily for seven days would help to treat candidiasis.

Chelsea 3 years ago

I started using Candid B for a fungal nail infection I have had for ages after a friend told me she used it to cure her nail infection. And it worked actually. She now has a healthy nail.

My problem is, my skin is now peeling around my fingers (which I can see is a side effect). I am reluctant to stop using it if it can work but I am also concerned about my peeling fingers and toes. I have it in all 10 fingernails and toenails.

My question is:

How long does the lotion remain effective, even after dipping my hands in water since I believe it is absorbed by the skin? I have reduced it to twice a day now and I am considering reducing it to a night-only application.

Also will it still tackle the problem if I further reduce it to 3 consecutive days in a week? I am very concerned about the fungus developing a resistance to it if I reduce the application.

Please advise.

Chelsea 3 years ago

Also is there an alternative I can use that can still tackle the problem without the steroid which causes the thinning since my fingers do not itch.

Please advise.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 3 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

You can use preparation without steroids, e.g. Candid cream (without B). Washing will obviously remove the medication, therefore you need to apply after washing. It does not absorbed from skin, it kills fungus growing in the skin. Usually you need to apply it thrice a day. Generally nail fungus infection is difficult to cure, you need to apply continously for at least 1 and half month.

If it is not settling, it is better to consult a dermatologist.

Some lesions may aggravate if you apply steroid containing medications. In addition, diagnosis can be missed if the skin condition is serious. But applying once or twice would not do any harm. If there is inflammation then steroids in this preparation will help to alleviate it.

If it is not itchy. But red, hot, and painful then it may not be due to fungal infection. Then candid b wont help. So you need to contact your doctor.

If it is ring worm then candid b is effective. You should apply it after cleaning the area with a mild soap. Usually twice a day is enough. You need to clean and dry your garments in sunlight to prevent reinfection.

It is safer to use it after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

njmanura profile image

njmanura 2 years ago from Sri Lanka Author

Chances of harm are very low and there have been no documented cases of harm to baby by using this product in pregnancy. Therefore, of you have severe fungal infection then by all means use it. Since you are using it on skin (not in vagina) , absorption is further reduced. Therefore, any antifungal preparation would have similar risk to this product. But if you are a person who is ultra careful then apply it after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

You can use either, as there is only slight difference between betamethasone and beclomethasone. Candid B has an anti fungal added to it.

Hi, I went to sri lanka and got a shirodhara massage on my head. After that I started losing hair loke crazy, went to a doctor and he said its a fungal infection. He prescribed me candid b lotion to use on my scalp daily for a month. Will this have side effects such as skin thinning? Can I htake orally any medicine to cure the fungus? EWill my hair grow back after treatment? And finally, I think the massage center used USED oil on my scalp...could this have caused the infection? Please reply!!!!

Long term use of candid b can cause skin thinning, but you can use it for several months (3 -4) before seeing that side effect. After treatment hair will grow back. Probably massage center introduced the fungus into your scalp.

Luna W. 4 months ago

Hi Doctor,

I was infected with Candidiasis for months I think, only 2 weeks ago I decided to visit a doctor due to rashes around my vagina and butt area, it was itchy. I am 24, virgin. I have been dealing with a lot of discharge, including white, brown, clear, even black discharge for the past few years and have always had the itch feeling around my vagina, only this time it got worse.

After my visit with a Dr, took a sample in my vagina, and prescribed me with ONE Fluconazole, and Econzine cream with piritton. I took the OCP and at night I put on the cream around my vagina and it was very itchy and I took piriton, and no longer used the cream. I thought the infection was over as 2-3 days after that my vagina got a lot better and less discharge , less itchy and rashes completely gone. Then, a week later a lab report for my sample shows that there's a heavy growth of Candid in my vagina, and yes on the same day, my vagina gets itchy back but not as itchy as before I took the pill.

Then, i told my Dr that and she gave me ONE more fluconazole and replaced me with Candid-B cream. She said to put on the cream as far as I can put it on my vagina, so I thought it has to reach inside the vagina, and For two days in a row, i put the cream on the mouth of my vagina and I know when i sit/walk/layback it will get into the inner area of my vagina, and I kinda put a lot of it as I do not know how much should I put it on until I read ur post.

My question is,

1. Why we cannot put the cream INSIDE the vagina? What's the side effect?

2. How long should the Fungal to be gone when I use the candid-B? Roughly?

3. You wrote earlier something to do with enter the blood etc, if it enters the blood, then what's the side effect?

Thank you so much for reading,

Look forward for your reply.

Regards,

Luna W.

1. Generally it is advised not to put Candid B inside the vagina, because it is not effective inside. For that there are vaginal tablets. There won't be any new side effect if you apply it inside the vagina.

2. Generally you need to apply it at least for 10 days. In addition, you need to sterilise (boil) your undergarments as candid fungal spores can reside in them (to prevent reinfection). Need your sexual partner to use this cream to prevent reinfection.

3. I mentioned about entering into blood to a lady who is worried about pregnancy. The amount is very very small and wont cause any harm.

Hello doc

For about 3 months now I ve seen these round fair patches on my face (am dark in complexion )..they kinda peel off when I scratch them ..but before then I had had the same problem a year back and I was given a fungal oral medication..with a vaginal cream .....but recently

I contacted a pharmacist and he prescribed fluconazole tablet and a candid b cream for me ..my problem is there's no discharge whatsoever ..just that it itches sometimes but not too much ...

Can I apply it to the patches on my face and also on my vagina even if it doesn't itch too much ?

Is it allergy to candid or reaction of kz and candid. Feeling very sad.
