Clarithromycin Side Effects
Clarithromycin is a antibiotic drug used to treat many different kinds of bacterial infections. It works against different kinds of bacteria, especially chlamydia, hemophilus and streptococcus. It belongs to the family of drugs called macrolides. It is also used in combination to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori. Clarithromycin drug will not work for viral infections like cold and flu. The drug is available in United states under the brand name Biaxin
and other countries it is known as Klacid and Mavid.
Side effects of Clarithromycin:
The side effects of Clarithromycin mostly affect the digestive system. Diarrhea, stomach upset, nausea, vomitting, and pain in abdomen may occur. Others may include changes in taste, light fever, sore throat, tooth discoloration and headache may occur. If any of these side effects persist, call your health care provider. Below you will find some of the serious side effects and allergic reaction of Clarithromycin. This is not a complete list of side effects, others may also occur.
Serious side effects of Clarithromycin:
Call your doctor immediately if you have any of the side effects:
- Hearing loss
- Mental / mood changes
- Severe dizziness
- Fast heartbeat
- Yellowing of the eyes and skin (Jaundice)
- Muscle weakness
- Changes in urine color
- Changes in vaginal discharge
- Severe Abdominal pain.
- Increase in hunger
- Mental confusion
- Vision blurring
- Swallowing difficulties
Allergic reaction of Clarithromycin: Allergic reaction may include rash, itching, swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
How to use Clarithromycin:
Take this medication as directed by your doctor. You can take this medicine with or without food. Antibiotics works best if it is taken at the same time each day. Stopping the medication too early may allow the bacteria to grow.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Clarithromycin (Biaxin), take it as soon as possible. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and go back to your normal dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Storage: Store Biaxin at 77 degrees F. Store away from heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom.
