Cure Holiday Blues and Anxiety with Supplements

Updated on December 1, 2010

Dealing with Holiday Blues

Not everyone is cheery and excited about the holidays. Some people just get too stressed and their anxiety level shoots up, or some people have traumatic experiences or sad memories related to the holidays, which can cause depression.

If you're the person who suffers the holiday blues and depression, there are natural options that you can consider to help ease your holiday. No matter what you're worried about, stressed over, or not looking forward to, there are natural supplements and vitamins that you can take to help ease the troubles.

What Causes Holiday Depression?

Holiday anxiety and depression is really a case by case basis, where not everyone is affected by the same thing. But, common causes of holiday blues may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Financial strain
  • Loss of a family member
  • Loneliness
  • Previous experience around the holidays that may evoke bad memories

In many cases, the loss of a family member before the holidays will cause depression and a doleful mood, as the holiday season is meant to be shared with family. The loss of a family member is a common cause of the holiday blues, and will become easier to deal with over time.

Treat Holiday Depression

Trying to deal with holiday depression can be hard, especially when most everyone around you is in a great mood, excited, happy, and blissful. Seeing these happy people can sometimes make your mood worse...

Trust me, as I'm in the same boat every year.

You can either ignore it, and wait out the season until it's done and over, and you are in a better mood, or you can try to help yourself before the time comes. The holidays come every year, and you know when-abouts you start to feel the anxiety and depression to come on, so you can (in theory) prevent it and help yourself as well as those around you.

Supplements and Natural Treatment

The first things you want to consider is what causes the depression. Because different people have different causes, you want to take into account your case. Is there a specific time or situation in which you feel the worse?

  • If it's money and a financial strain, consider layaway options, as so many stores offer layaway so that you can pay along the way and have all the perfect gifts wrapped and ready for the holiday.
  • If it's money, start saving early. Put away $20+ a pay check throughout the year, so that when it comes to buying gifts, you have the money, and don't have to worry about how you're going to afford everything.

If you're blues are caused by other means, such as loneliness, past memories, loss of a family member, or something else, you may want to consider other natural options to help ease your depression and/or anxiety.

  • Exercising daily will help get your blood pumping and proper hormones flowing to help reduce your depression.
  • Eating a healthy diet will help maintain your daily nutrition and essentials, which can help your mood.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, as it is a depressant, which can increase the anxiety and bad mood you're already in.
  • Consider taking supplements and vitamins, as they have been known to help many people treat depression and anxiety. Just remember to start taking them at least 6 weeks in advance, so that they are properly in your system when you need them.
