Common Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Do you suffer from dandruff and hair-loss? Do you wonder why dandruff appears in your head? You want to stop dandruff and hair loss?

This article gives you an insight into one of the main cause of dandruff and hair fall, which is Seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Dandruff is dead flakes of skin on the scalp. Several things cause dandruff including unusually rapid cell turnover in the scalp. One of the main reasons for dandruff and hair fall is Seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is caused by fungus. Yeast named Malassezia is the main culprit. The fungus which grows in the scalp produces toxic substances causes itching, irritability and inflammation. This fungus (Malassezia) hydrolyses human sebum, releasing a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids create inflammation causes immature cell death in the scalp which appears as flakes, which is dandruff. The picture shows common pattern of Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Symptoms

· Inflammation of the skin on scalp (redness))

· Dandruff on scalp

· Itching and irritability on scalp

· Scaly skin lesions

· Hair loss due to dandruff

Does Seborrhoeic dermatitis cause permanent hair loss?

Yes. It does.

The fatty acids produced by the yeast cause serious damage to hair follicles. Hair follicles get completely damaged if Seborrhoeic dermatitis left unattended for long. Once a hair follicle get destroyed, it’s very unlikely to get a hair grow again in that place.

Treatment

Regular use of shampoos and scalp hygiene is a must. Daily shower and usage of shampoos twice in a week is recommended. Shampoos which contain Ketoconazole and Zinc Pyrithione is commonly used it’s very effective. 2% Ketoconazole and 1% Zinc Pyrithione is the usual dosage. You may get shampoos containing these substances in medical stores. One month of treatment with this shampoo solution is enough for most of the cases. In case if this treatment fails, you should consult a dermatologist and get expert help.

Head shave REALLY helps!

It’s a common practice to shave or shorten the hair to counter dandruff. But effectiveness of this method against common dandruff is quite minimal. But in case of Seborrhoeic dermatitis, head shaving really helps. Fungus does not like sunlight. Head shave helps scalp to receive direct sunlight, due to this, fungus growth will get shortened. Complete head shave is really effective against Seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Good advice, but short. Have you tried the green rubbing alcohol? I get this on my face, and a couple scrubbings with a washrag and the green alcohol seem to control it well. For some reason the regular alcohol doesn't work well.
