Why Is Your Poop Dark Green
Dark green poop is something that concerns almost everyone. However, poop of this color is not life threatening. There are many reasons why your poop has turned green. These reasons can vary from the type of food that you eat to certain medical conditions. If you are experiencing dark green poop, there are some ways to treat the condition as well as some preventative measures to aid in keeping this from happening to you.
First we need to understand that your poop starts out green in color. This is due to bile. Bile is a dark green fluid which is secreted from the liver. This bile is stored in the small intestine and then the gallbladder. As the poop travels through our intestine system the digestive process changes the color of your poop. Sometimes we experience decreased bowel transit. This means that your poop has traveled through the intestines at a rate that is faster than normal. But why would this be happening.
There are other reasons why your poop may turn green. Some of these other reasons are; food poisoning, laxative use, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease, antibiotic use, Malabsorption, Ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, medication side effects, traveler's diarrhea, bacterial overgrowth, infectious diarrhea and cancer. These are all medical reasons as to why your poop may turn green. There are still more reasons why you may be experiencing this condition such as a larger than normal intake of green leafy foods, excessive sugar or even certain food dyes.
Due to the nature in which we experience dark green poop such as medications or ingested foods, there is no real danger. However, you want to seek the consultation of a doctor if alongside this condition you experience any fever, rectal pain, constipation, weight loss or general malaise.
When treating this condition, the first thing to do is find out the root cause. As mentioned above, you may want to seek out a doctor if you are experiencing any other symptoms along with the dark green poop. Another form of treatment is a colon cleansing. Doing a colon cleansing will help your body to flush out any unwanted or harmful toxins and make your bowel movements more regular and easy. Doing a colon cleanse on a regular basis will allow your body to be more healthy digestive system.
