What is the Root of Your Depression?

It has been said that depression is an internal battle caused by the way a person thinks. Therefore it would seem easy enough that simply changing thoughts will eliminate depression. At times this becomes overwhelming or difficult for individuals, but there is always hope, and you can always overcome and reduce your depression to a point where it is extremely insignificant.

The most important strategy in overcoming depression may be pinpointing why the depression is occurring. Is it the result of a relationship problem, job loss, car accident, or some sort of physical injury sustained? Perhaps the depression has been the result of some sort of trauma? Often times, identifying the source of the depression will be your best first step so you can then proceed with how to work on solving the issue. Eat a Healthy Diet

Many of the foods we put into our body are loaded with sugar, fat and other harmful substances. When you're suffering depression, eating a healthier diet can help with your mood in general. It will make you feel healthier overall and certain foods can also be mood boosters.

Consider adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet as well as healthy meals including chicken and proteins. Avoid snacking late at night and especially before bed. Also consider eliminating sugary foods from your diet including soft drinks. Drinking alcohol excessively can also lead to further depression so cutting down or eliminating alcoholic beverages may go a long way to overcoming depression. Following these concepts can help to increase your overall feelings of healthiness.  Eating properly will not only make you feel better it can help you avoid issues like acid reflux disease, lose weight and extend your life span.

Exercise Regularly

One of the best mood elevators is exercise and it can make a big difference in your life. Taking at least one brisk 30 minute walk a day can boost your heart rate and natural chemicals in you that will add to your overall happiness. In addition, working out and getting cardiovascular exercise can lead to a healthier self image. With your new more fit self you will see your self esteem take a boost and begin to leave feelings of depression behind. Consider joining the local gym or simply starting to take more walks in your neighborhood or local area. As always, consult your family physician before beginning any serious exercise program.

Yoga & Meditation

Depression often includes overwhelmingly negative thoughts. Yoga is not only great for your health and flexibility but it also helps you to relax your mind.  Meditation is often linked to yoga but can be done independent of yoga, also to gain inner peace. With meditation you'll learn to quite your mind, release stress, and bring in positive, peaceful states of mind. There have been yoga and meditation programs specifically designed for those suffering from depression. These can aid you throughout the day to relieve stress and depression. Yoga programs may appear on your local TV channels, or you may be able to pick up free yoga DVD's for borrow at your local library. There's been plenty written on the internet about it as well. There's also plenty of free meditation podcasts available at iTunes music store to get you started with this. Consider forming this habit to cultivate a more positive, relaxed mind state which will greatly aid you in overcoming depression.

Surround Yourself with People

People who suffer depression may tend to feel alone in their battle, as if they are in a hopeless situation with nowhere to turn.  Depression may make someone feel like avoiding all other people, but this can only make things worse.  Getting into more social gatherings and events can help elevate your mood, as well as provide you with extra support systems. Consider joining your local church's activities, or volunteering for a charity cause to help others as well.  This will take the focus off your situation and boost your mood as you help others. There are also support groups which meet regularly where you may meet others who can aid you in overcoming your depression.

Talk to a Professional

Often times, people frown upon making scheduled visits with a psychiatrist or mental health professional, because they don't want to be seen as a freak or crazy. However, there is no shame in getting help by talking to one of these professionals, and in fact it is one of the best ways of self-improvement. If you want to live a full, successful life then making an appointment to see a therapist can be the first step in overcoming your depression. These professionals can give you techniques and help you discuss the things that may be leading to your depression, often making you feel much better just through the discussions.

There are several natural medications or herbal cures you can try to use to battle depression. One popular herbal cure is St. John's Wort. There has been strong evidence through clinical trials that St. John's Wort is effective in treating depression with fewer side effects than antidepressants have. Other remedies include Omega-3 fatty acids which can be taken daily in pill form, or gained when you eat certain fish like salmon. There are certain vitamins known to help aid in mood elevation and fighting depression which include the vitamins B-6 and Magnesium. Make sure to consult with your doctor or therapist before trying any natural treatment, as some may have side effects or act adversely when taken with prescribed meds.

Antidepressant Medications

This is last on the list because often times there are serious cases of depression which require prescribed medication to help deal with the depression. Some of the antidepressant meds used today include prozac, lithium, wellbutrin and zoloft. A newer medication, is Cymbalta, which is still under trial, but seen advertised heavily on television. There are side effects and withdrawal symptoms of Cymbalta just like any other antidepressant or medication. Some antidepressants can lead to worsened feelings of depression or even thoughts of suiciden. Always make sure to consult your doctor while taking these meds.
