Fasting Gives the Colon a Rest
Peristalsis is the contractions that the colon makes. It is similar to the contractions that the heart makes. If you could stop the heart contractions and give the heart a 3 week rest, it would probably double your lifespan. But I know of no way to do that.
The colon also makes contractions like the heart that never stops until you die. Peristalsis is "the progressive wave of contraction and relaxation of a tubular muscular system, especially the alimentary canal [from mouth to anus], by which the contents are forced through the system." Note that the colon is also called the large intestine.
So how do I know that fasting can stop this. Well it takes food to go from mouth to elimination in about 24 hours. Now I have fasted on only pure water for 22 days. Other than the first several days I have have no need to have a bowel movement during the fast. But when I break the fast I (and others) will have the need to have a bowel movement before the meal ends.
So the reason that there is no need to have a bowel movement during the fast must be that even though the waste is in there, it has no need to come out since the contractions have stopped. Then when you start eating, they start again and you need to have a bowel movement of waste that has been in there a while.
Now what is amazing is what happens during that break or vacation. If your heart could take a break, it would probably repair anything that is wrong with it. So during that break it becomes stronger and works better than ever before. Note that it usually takes around 5 days of fasting before the peristalsis stops since people on a fast will have a bowel movement before about 5 days of it. They say that in 10 days of fasting it purifies the blood.
This webpage tells about cleaning the colon during a fast but this one is the best by far. It is called Colon Cleansing During Fasting.
Dr. Herbert Shelton (N.D., D.C.) performed about 40,000 fasts. Now I said that only the fast is needed and nothing else is needed to cleanse your colon. Well since Dr. Shelton figured that you needed to cleanse the waste out of everyone when you began the fast, he gave enemas to the first 6,000 he fasted (supervised their fast).
Then he learned that they were not needed. Once the fast is over and it was more than several days, then the colon becomes aggressive at getting rid of waste and gets rid if it quickly. Although it took him 6,000 tries to learn it. It is a pain in the butt to give enemas.
Now there is a N.D. who used to have the most severe sypmtom's of Crohn's disease by the name of Dr. Jordan Rubin. He would have diarrhea so bad that we would need to take a bowel movement every 2 hours. This meant that he could only sleep for 2 hours at a time. He went to a hospital in Germany that gave him opium to slow down his peristalsis. If only a doctor knew that it could be stopped by fasting.
It used to be common knowledge that if you have a problem with eating, then just stop doing it. Do you know why the Bible has 74 references to fasting? It was what Jews used it for medicine. Here is an article about Jordan Rubin. It says:
For more than two years the young man experienced between twelve and 30 usually bloody bowel movements per day. They came on all night too, allowing him to sleep no more than one hour at any given time.
Jordan Rubin's quality of life was nonexistent. To find some viable therapy, he consulted over 70 health practitioners worldwide and tried more than 200 different nutritional products, including several probiotic preparations. As he explained to me, "During the two years of my illness, despite my ongoing search for treatment, I was never granted even one day of reprieve from the symptoms of Crohn's Disease. The excessive amounts of emotional, physical, and mental distress caused me to want to die."
So all he had to do was to stop eating. He has a nutrition company now with excellent products. It is mentioned in the above article-- Garden of Life. Stress and bad diet can cause this disease. His father is a doctor of chiropractic (D.C). He raised him on a very good diet. Then he went to college and ate a very bad diet. I read all about him in a book they gave out free at Whole Foods markets.
Note that the professional fasters recommend you get your fast supervised so nothing goes wrong. The biggest danger is that it lowers blood pressure so if someone gets up too fast, they could pass out and fall and break their head open. The second biggest danger is that one out of 200 people have trouble with too little potassium and the fast must be stopped right away. But I think that problem does not come up unless you fast longer than 10 days.

But you will not get the benefits that are listed here since your peristalsis does not stop. I have a book on fasting by Dr. Shelton. The he boke his foot and doctors told him he would never skate again. He was fasted by Dr. Shelton for longer than Jesus fasted and then he won some skating medals.
He became an M.D. that treats people with fasting followed by a change in diet. He created the nutritarian diet that suggests lowering the intake of animal foods.. He has created the ANDI (aggregate nutrient density index) scale of food that gives kale a 1,000 that Whole Foods market uses. He also says to protect the body from disease one should eat G-BOMBS. It is an acronym that stands for greens, berries, onions, mushrooms, beans, seeds and nuts.
