What Is An E-Cig?
An e-cigarette is an electronic device with a nicotine delivery system designed to provide you with a predetermined amount of nicotine in the form of vapor rather than actual smoke. The e-cig generally uses a heating element known as an atomizer that vaporizes a liquid solution known as e-liquid. E-liquids usually contain a mixture of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and flavorings. The electronic cigarette first entered the market in China in 2004 by a pharmacist a from China invented the device-his name is Hon Lik.

E-cigarette and What's It's All About
E-cigarettes are rechargeable devices that allow you to inhale nicotine in a propylene glycol vapor, which can be blown out with the look and feel of real smoke.
Most of the models are automatic - as you suck on the mouthpiece, just like a cigarette, a sensor activates a heating element that vaporizes the liquid that is held in the mouthpiece.
You can choose whether or not to have nicotine in the flavored liquid solution. In older models (manual models), there is a little button which turns the heating element on and off. An LED indicates whether the device has been activated when the user inhales.
The liquid turns into vapor, which is then inhaled, (which is also called "vaped"). While some argue that vapor offers health advantages over traditional cigarette smoke, regulatory agencies and some health experts aren't so sure that's true. There is a lot of controversy on electronic cigarettes as to the health benefits to the risks.
Now, keep in mind, there are a ton of flavors that the e-liquid comes in and you can decide how much nicotine you want. I started off at 24 mg and then slowly decreased. Actually, I don't use any nicotine in my liquid now, it's just flavor. Some may ask why I continue to "smoke" the e-cig then and my answer simply is because I still have the urge to smoke and this takes care of that urge. I get the hand to mouth, throat hit and smoke (vapor) that I still crave.
Comparing E-Cigs to Smoking Patches
There was a randomized study reported in last year and the study showed that the six-month quit rate at 7.3 percent for those who used e-cigarettes, compared to 5.8 percent for those who used nicotine patches.
The researchers believed that e-cigarettes were moderately effective at helping smokers to quit.
My Personal Experience With The E-Cig
We all know that cigarette smoking is bad for you and as a former smoker, I understand. I use the e-cigarette and have been "smoke" free for almost 9 months now. I first started off with the basic e-cig and still continued to smoke my regular cigs. The basic e-cigarette had a tobacco flavor still and the end of the e-cigarette lit up. It did produce some vapor, but not enough for the throat hit that a smoker needs.
I tried the actual liquid "vaping" and quit right away. I never picked up another real cigarette. I must confess, there was an occasion or two where I tried to take a drag of a real cigarette, but rest assured, I dropped that thing right down back in the ashtray is it was the worst tasting thing I ever had.
I smoked for 30 years and was a pack and half day smoker. I don't miss smoking cigarettes and to be honest, I can't stand the smell of my husband when he walks in the house. They say a former smoker is the worst critic and I am a critic! I used to use the nicotine patch and I never benefited from it.
There are a couple things you need to know if you decide to switch. Please keep in mind that I am not encouraging e-cigs for the flavor or to have anyone start these. I am giving you my personal experience and it's up to you to make a decision. I do not recommend these for anyone who doesn't even smoke or for young teenagers to be "cool." This should be strictly used for an honest to goodness smoker who is trying or needing to quit. I have spoken with a lot of people and everyone I know that has quit smoking, went to vaping.
Please consult with your Dr. before trying any new product. My physician was fine with the e-cigarette.
