Parkinson's Disease medication, dopamine agonist, can this cause Gambling addiction?

While surfing the internet searching for help with my gambling issues I came across an article which I found very disturbing. How could medication prescribed by a professional cause you harm? Well I have found that this is indeed possible.

Dopamine Agonist which is prescribed for people with Parkinson’s disease has been blamed for causing pathological gambling behaviour in some patients.

Apparently Parkinson’s disease results in the death of the neurons of an area of the brain called the substantial nigra. Treatments include drugs that restore balance in the brain chemical signalling system dependent on dopamine, a chemical that helps regulate movement, balance and walking.

Dopamine also plays a role in the brain's behavioural reward system. It has been implicated in the reward of gambling behaviour.

After starting on medication, some people with Parkinson’s disease undergo a dramatic personality change, becoming impulsive, addiction-prone pleasure-seekers. In particular, a high rate of pathological gambling among these patients has led researchers to rethink how the neurotransmitter dopamine works in both diseased and normal brains.

Fortunately I do not have Parkinson’s disease and do not take this medication so unfortunately I cannot blame my gambling addiction on Dopamine Agonist. I only have myself to blame.

Do Not be too Hard on Yourself: Take it Step by Step

If you aren't able to resist the gambling craving, don’t be too hard on yourself or use it as an excuse to give up. Overcoming a gambling addiction is a tough process. You may slip from time to time; the important thing is to learn from your mistakes and continue working towards recovery:

Speaking as a Gambler

"Kind words indeed and very apt. There is nothing worse than people been ‘on your case’ when you are trying to stop an addiction. It is a very tough process and one that few people can overcome. Learning from your mistakes sounds easy but been a gambler it is very easy to forget your mistakes in order to justify going to the casino for "One last time" .

Do you have a Problem with Gambling

A Problem with Gambling is an urge to continuously gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. Gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others, rather than by the gambler's behaviour.

Severe problem gambling may be diagnosed as clinical pathological gambling if the gambler meets certain criteria. Pathological gambling is a common disorder that is associated with both social and family costs.

The condition is classified as an impulse control disorder, with sufferers exhibiting many similarities to those who have substance addictions.

Although the term gambling addiction is used in the recovery movement, pathological gambling is considered by the American Psychiatric Association to be an impulse control disorder rather than an addiction.

However, for the DSM 5.0 Pathological Gambling is being considered as an Addictive Disorder as opposed to an impulse-control disorder.

Reasons Why We May Gamble

To provide excitement, get a rush of adrenaline

My answer to this speaking as a gambler

"Yes, this is an upside to gambling and probably the worst as once you get that ‘rush’ you just keep wanting more and more. Unfortunately that ‘rush’ even though very pleasant indeed, can be very very expensive. It can be more expensive and sometimes fatal than if you where taking a class A drug. In my opinion, as a gambler, gambling should be classified as a catorgary A disease. Some people call it the 'silent' disease. Well It most likely is a silent disease. As a gambler I like to be very 'silent' indeed about my addiction.

Reason why we may Gamble

To be more social, overcome shyness or isolation:

My answer to this speaking as a gambler

"Yes this is also true of gambling. When people are shy and wish to socialise it is nice to be able to walk into your local casino and sit down beside people you have met along the way and have a chat about your day. Especially for women. Unlike men women do not usually visit pubs clubs or restaurants alone but walking into a casino on your own is more exceptable. And for this reason a lot of women, including myself, visit the casinos for the company and to get a break from everyday life. Unfortunatley this usually leads to losing money you cannot afford".

Why do we Gamble?

To numb unpleasant feelings, not think about problems:

My answer to this speaking as a gambler

"Sitting at a machine and gambling is a great way to ‘Switch off’ from your everyday life. 90% of the time that is why I gamble. It’s great for passing time and not thinking about your problems especially when you win. When I win and have recharged my batteries it’s the best feeling in the world. Sometimes even when I have lost my money I feel refreshed as I have giving my mind the day off".

Why Do We Gamble

Boredom or loneliness

My answer to this speaking as a gambler:

"Oh boredom is a terrible thing especially if you are a gambler and even worse when you are a gambler with no money. Yes loneliness is a very sad thing also and yes unfortunatley gambling can sometimes help with this but again it is a very expense way of dealing with things".

To relax after a stressful day

My answer to this speaking as a gambler:

"There is nothing better after a stressful day than going to the local casino and sitting at your favourite machine and distressing after a hard day".

To solve money problems

My answer to this speaking as a gambler:

"Sometimes gambling does solve my money problems but MOST of the time gambling is what causes my money problems in the first place, so if I did not gamble then I would not have a money problem".. !

Tips On How To Handle Gambling Cravings

A few tips on how to better handle Gambling cravings

Feeling the urge to gamble is normal, but that doesn’t make it any easier when you are struggling to make better choices. Remember, as you build healthier choices and a good support network, resisting cravings will be easier and easier. The following strategies can help:

Reach out for support. Call a trusted family member, meet a friend for coffee, or go to a Gamblers Anonymous meeting:

Speaking as a Gambler

"I have reached out many times for support and each and every time I have received it. Coming from a loving family I am not short of people who are willing to help. Unfortunately as a gambler I have always reverted back to my old ways and said “thanks for the support but I am fine now and can handle things from here” As soon as my support has turned their backs off I go again to climb into that black hole looking for some light".

More Tips on How you can control your Gambling

Do something else. Distract yourself with another activity, such as cleaning your house, going to the gym, or watching a movie:

Speaking as a Gambler

" I Have done and tried all of these activities and more but as a gambler these things seem mundane compared to the rush of excitement you get from gambling".

Postpone gambling. Tell yourself that you’ll wait five minutes, fifteen minutes, or an hour: However long you think you can hold out. As you wait, the urge to gamble may pass or become weak enough to resist:

Speaking as a Gambler

"This is a good strategy and has worked for me in the past. I still give in eventually but it has defiantly stopped me from going gambling many times and on the occasions that it has I have felt very good about myself".

Tips on How Not to Gamble

Give yourself a reality check. Visualize what will happen if you give in to the urge to gamble. Think about how you’ll feel after all your money is gone and you’ve disappointed yourself and your family again:

Speaking as a Gambler

"I have given myself many many ‘reality checks’. Yes it has stopped me from going gambling on a lot of occasions. I always try to remind myself of the many times I have returned home after a bad gambling sessions with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. How sometimes I cannot sleep for days because I am so disappointed in myself and how embarrassed I am to have to tell my family that I have yet again lost my money.

Avoid Isolation. If you gamble to socialize or be around other people, try healthier ways to build a social network. Volunteer, connect with old friends, and make new friends:

Speaking as a Gambler

"Isolation is a dangerous thing especially when you are a gambler. Most gamblers crave for isolation or should I say unlucky gamblers do as it is easier to return to an empty house after a bad session, that way you do not have to explain yourself to anyone but yourself".

Very interesting theory about one reason for a gambling addiction. The side effects of a lot of medication can be devastating to some people.

Hi viking305

Yes it must be awful for this to happen, not only for the patient but also for the family. Any addiction not only has an impact on the 'user' it also affects their family and friends.

Its one thing having an addiction as I do but to have that addiction from a medication that was given to you by a professional cannot be an easy thing to have to deal with.

They really should do more research into all the medication before they allow it to be prescribed. But like most things in life 'money' has a lot to do with why they rush these things into the markets.

Hopefully these reports will prevent any more patients of Parkinson’s disease suffering as these people have.

Thank you for taking the time to visit and comment and keep writing those great hubs of yours. I really enjoy your writing viking305; keep up the good work.... Garlic Angel :-)
