I like to share information that makes life more joyful and meaningful. My main interests are health and general wellness in body and mind.

Healthy Nutrition

Healthy Nutrition : Don't Be A Health Freak.

As we grow older, we become more conscious and cautious of our diet. The more we read about the healthy nutrition guides, the more things we have to avoid eating. What about fresh fruits and vegies? Common sense on healthy nutrition will tell us to eat more fruits and vegies to stay healthy. What to avoid? Healthy nutrition guides will advise us to cut down on fats, oil, salt and sugar which are the major health hazards.

Soybeans are supposed to be one of the top choices. The Chinese have been consuming soybeans in various forms for thousands of years. Soybean protein is as good as animal protein, if not better. It is "complete", meaning that it contains all the eight amino acids for human health. Soybeans are the only non-meat food that contain protein make-up which is considered to be nutritionally complete. However, it is mentioned that since soybeans are rich in antioxidants which help cells survive, there is an increase risk of infertility. Well, we can't have everything can we?

Tomatoes are next on my list. It is said that lycopene, the bright red antioxidant pigment found in tomatoes can reduce the risk of cancer, particularly prostate cancer. Lycopene also helps to protect the skin from sun damage.

I try to reduce red meat intake. I think if a person sees how animals are slaughtered, he may think of reducing meat intake. So I go for fish.

Healthy Nutrition : Be Moderate In Our Diet.

I don't usually read analyzes and comments on food items. I am sure an average person is aware of which are the healthy foods and which are not. And I am just an average ordinary person. I don't want to be bogged down with the "scientific" researches telling us what to eat and what to avoid. Don't be surprised when the "latest" news tell us that "further research" discovered that the contrary is true. Two subjects on issue are coffee and eggs. The "experts" said caffeine is bad, and egg yolk is a killer. Just drink the coffee and eat the egg yolk! That's what i do. I take the moderate approach. As far as I am concerned, eggs are good for me! The healthier stuff I take more, while the potentially "dangerous" ones I will always be cautious and consume less, if I can't avoid them.

Healthy Nutrition : Fruit Juices

I make my own fresh fruit juices, mix with a spoonful of psyllium husks. What are psyllium husks? My usual fruits are pineapple, carrot, apple, cucumber, orange, tomato, a bit of ginger and potato. Yes potato. In fact there is this viral email circulating that a "miracle drink" can even cure cancer. This miracle drink is actually a very simple fruit juice combination of one each of carrot, apple and potato!

Apple juice helps maintain the levels of a brain chemical called acetylcholine, which is vital for memory and brain health. Low level of acetylcholine is linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps the body digest proteins and aids digestion. Bromelain acts as an anti-inflammatory agent which can reduce arthritis joint pain and swelling.

Have you heard of "falcarinol"? This substance is found in carrots. Falcarinol is a natural pesticide that protects carrots against fungal diseases. Research done has found that falcarinol can reduce the risk of developing cancer.

Potato contains a large amount of carbohydrate, in the form of starch. A small but significant portion of this starch is resistant to digestion by enzymes in the stomach and small intestine. As a result this "resistant starch" can reach the large intestine essentially intact. This resistant starch is considered to have similar physiological effects and health benefits as fiber. It provides bulk and gives protection against colon cancer, improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, lowers plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations, increases satiety, and possibly even reduces fat storage.

Healthy Nutrition And Regular Exercise

If you want to be healthy, eating right alone is not enough. Yes, exercise. I practise qigong as well as yoga. You can refer to my article on easy and relaxing qigong with Youtube presentation. Healthy diet and regular exercise are keys to keep the body strong. But this is still not enough to prevent sickness.

Apart from this physical body, our mind needs taking care of. We need a relaxed and clear mind to boost our immune system. To have a hateful, aggrassive, resentful, and negative mind is actually adding poison to your body. When your mind is clear and relaxed, your system will function smoothly. And if you are always a happy person, then it's a bonus!

My latest health regime is taking health supplements every day. Previously I took them only when I felt like I was going to be sick. It was always too late when the sickly symptoms appeared. Lately I changed strategy. I take my health supplements regularly every day. Since following this method, I have been in good health. I don't take all my health supplements everyday. I take only one type of supplement for a few days, and then I change to the next type. With this rotation method, I am providing my body with a sufficient variety of nutrients and vitamins, and not overloading my body with too much of them. This is moderation. The health supplements that I take are spirulina, omega fish oil, cod liver oil, multi-vitamins and sea-buckthorn.

My latest addition to my health regime is a tablespoon of raw unprocessed honey first thing in the morning and before going to bed at night. Be careful when you buy raw unprocessed honey. You need to get it from reliable sources. As for me, I get it from a reliable source, direct from the jungles in Malaysia. This honey is so excellent that I am also supplying to my friends and to those who approach me.

But be prepared. Health problems may strike without warning, while you are relaxing!

This is my personal view. What do you think?
