Epitaph to Mom

Updated on May 6, 2015

What is an Epitaph?

An epitaph is something written or said in memory of a dead person; especially : words written on a gravestone.

In this day and age we have a variety of mediums that can be used to write the memories and thoughts of a beloved one who has passed. In this case we are talking about the passing of your dearly beloved mother.

Each of us have different memories and experiences throughout our lifetime relating to a parent(s). Expressing these memories in writing not only helps the person who's left behind, but it also honors the life of those that have left us. We don't always need the physical presence of a loved one to remember the good (and Bad) times that were had in ones lifetime - we actually don't have a choice in life and death.

Epitaph to Mom

It was 5 years ago today that you left us, it seems like yesterday.

I know your last few months here were not the best - confined to your hospital bed, in pain; I guess your leaving was a blessing for you, but a loss for me.

I'll always remember how you were there when I made mistakes. You were there to console, correct, and guide me to a better future. You were there to congratulate me when I did good and that brought a smile to your face, and mine too.

In some of the darkest days, when no one else cared, you were there for me. No hesitation, no reservations, just the unconditional love that a mother is bore with.

Young or old I was always your Son, we had a lot of laughs and we had a lot of fun.

Looking back we can't say life was so bad, but I still didn't want you to leave so soon - that still makes me Sad.

I know I'm being selfish, I don't want to see you in pain, but I don't want to let you go - I guess there's really no time a son wants to let go of his mom.

When I was young you would feed and hold me, now in your final days I will do for you the same. Soon your body will feel no more pain.

As a Mom, a Parent, you teach, council, cook, clean and so many other things we take for granted. I'm glad we had the time for me to say thanks, I appreciate that.

We don't always have that chance in this fast paced, money hungry, crazy world we live in, and life doesn't warn us when the time comes to say goodbye - so you better say "thanks Mom" today" while you still have the chance.

Mom, there's no more comforting embrace like yours, that's the way life planned it. Now I'll have to embrace the memory of your Love and Kindness, the kind only a Mom can give.

Why are Moms special? Because in a world where everyone takes Moms just give, without hesitation, without expectations, maybe a thanks or I love you here and there - not much to ask for a lifetime of care.

So Mom, another year has come and gone since you passed away. I'm here and you're there, and life goes on. The memories of the past are the thoughts of the future that will be with me for the rest of my natural born life.

Many words in the English language only have meaning when written right to left, but the word Mom is the same no matter which way you read it - and this is a reminder of how special a Mom really is.

I'll always love you MOM......
