Summer is just around the corner and that means we want to be able to wear bathing suits and shorts, while looking slim and trim. Most exercisers seem to turn their attention more towards the midsection of their bodies so that they can get a flat stomach, and while this is important the hips and legs should not be ignored.

There are some great exercises to work the lower half of your body which will help you to lose fat,are with the simplest being just plain walking. However, you can use a treadmill and several other pieces of exercise equipment at most fitness centers.

There are two new are great ways to get your bottom half in shape by shedding some unwanted pounds. Dance classes with the first being Zumba and the other is belly dancing. The secret to these programs is the fun factor because you don't feel like you're exercising because it's more like dancing. There are classes available for beginners, intermediates and for senior citizens.

The Importance of Shapely Legs

The legs and hips should be taken just as seriously, as they can make a big impact on your personal and professional life. Of course, the lower part of your body is important for walking, running, climbing stairs and lifting objects, but they can also help or hinder your career, which sounds kind of crazy. Unfortunately appearance counts, sometimes and just getting hired for job. Think about Tina Turner, for instance, who is famous for her strong sculptures legs. She is still touring at the age of 69, showing off are still sexy legs in skintight Capri pants.

Another celebrity who is known for shapely legs is Brooke Shields. Obviously we aren’t all built like that, but we can sure make the best of what we have. If you can tone your muscles and lose a little weight, you will look better in a bathing suit or any clothing for that matter. Many women get stressed about their overall size or just the size or their hips and the best advice I can give them is just quit worrying and get moving.

Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness program, using red-hot international music. I have been in the Zumba class for over two years, and it is so much fun that I hate to miss any classes. As you learn the routines it gets easier especially because you are improving your physical condition. Exercisers mumble, salsa and merengue in a fast-paced work out that will leave you more fit and waiting less if you continue with the classes. The Zumba website states more than 10 million people take weekly classes in more than 110 countries. During a one-hour session exercises can burn between 500 and 800 calories. The instructors are required to complete a certification course before they are eligible to teach classes and each instructor may bring a little bit of their own style and personality into their routines. Zumba’s motto is “Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked.”

Since Zumba is so popular a variety of other classes have evolved including: Zumba Gold which targets baby boomers; Zumba for toning which combines body sculpting moves with high energy cardio; Aqua Zumba which is done in the pool; the ZumbaAtomic, for children ages 4 to 12; and Zumba Circuit which combines circuit training and dance. The video below is obviously not beginners routine but you will be amazed at how quickly you progress if you attend Zumba classes regularly.

Belly dancing is also very popular although this form of self-expression has been around for more than 6000 years. The early documentation is really poor but it pertains its connection to fertility and eroticism by being an indispensable feature at weddings and many Middle Eastern countries. Today belly dance is enjoyed worldwide and taught in almost every country. Beside the joy of learning a beautiful dance, you receive satisfaction from achieving new levels of physical mastery. Another benefit is you have strengthening, reshaping and renewed acceptance of your body. It is also stated that you will get relief from back pain and the dance is just fun to do especially when you are learning it with your girlfriends. Also, belly dancing outfits are absolutely gorgeous.

In the United States, belly dancing was adopted as a form of exercise 1970s. One of the good things about belly dancing is it is a low-impact form of exercise for women of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels. This dance uses a variety of hip thrusts, hip drops and circles which help tone and tighten the lower body. Dancers can burn as many as 250 to 300 calories during a one-hour class

Exercise Benefits

There are other benefits to exercising besides making your legs and hips look summertime-hot, as it will provide strengthening the lower half of your body, and help you to perform many other fun activities, such as, dancing, gardening or playing tennis as those activities will become much easier with improved muscle tone.

If you want to learn how to lose weight and exercise has to be part of the equation along with a healthy diet. There are literally hundreds of dance classes forming across the nation, particularly in the larger cities. No matter what type of exercise you prefer, if you will do it consistently you will be pleased with the results. When you trim down and have more energy because of the exercise you also have better self-esteem. It is a win–win situation.

I wish there are programs where I can wear a pedometer (which measures how far walked or run) and earn points or gift cards or other rewards based on the distance walked. I think that would be a good motivator for exercise.

Blissful, My daughter-in-law uses a pedometer all the time. I don't know how that would work with the dancing, but of course, the reward for her is lost pounds and inches. She has done great. There is always running with an occasional reward of just finishing a marathon. I obviously don't have any good suggestions for you unless you could compete with a buddy. Thanks for your comments.

Great tips, Pamela - I read somewhere the other day about sitting and watching TV (or I deduced sitting at your computer) and letting your belly hang out. I think it is the equivalent of doing kegels but with your stomach and that if we did more with our abdominal muscles while sitting there doing 'nothing' it strengthens them and also takes the strain off our back.

Since I spend 8-10 hours per day in a chair, I'm trying this method out - but I'd rather be doing the workouts above. I never felt better than when I was playing old lady soccer....though I faithfully ride my bike, walk, and do the treadmill. I think exercise and fun though is the answer!

Zumba is a great exercising program. I became acquainted with it a couple of months ago and love it. Years ago a gym that I belonged to offered belly dancing as a way to exercise. It was also great.

I had never heard of Zumba but that video got me out of my chair and I tried my best to follow along...although I'll admit to being a bit clumsy. Haha! Looks like fun! Last year I focused on shimmy belly dancing. I recall my husband coming home after a poker game and asked what I had been up to. I told him I was watching Fit TV and learning to "shimmy" and he asked me to teach him. I asked him do you even know what that is , he says no, who cares its sound interesting. LOL

(Shimmy = Belly Dancing)

Funny I happen to find this hub as I just ordered my Zumba CD's three days ago. Pretty excited to get start. Looks like a great time and workout.

Bail Up, At least Zumba is a fun way to exercise but it doesn't mean you're not working hard. It has certainly helped me maintain my weight and as I haven't been able to dance in the last five weeks due to surgery and I have three weeks to go; I can tell I'm going to have to get back to it and work really hard. Great article on exercises to lose fat. I always wanted to learn how to belly dance. I focus a lot on exercising the legs and hips with bicycle riding, but belly dancing would be a fun activity too. Thanks for the information.

cherrycrime, I did Zumba for several years and loved it. It is so much fun, but now I get to short of breath due to lung disease. Belly dancing is another great way to tone your muscles. My daughter-in-law teaches belly dancing. I appreciate your comments.
