Flax Seed Oil Manages My Eczema
First off, if you suspect or do know that you have eczema, it is a good idea to consult with your doctor before starting to use any type of supplement such as flax seed. Although it is natural, it can effect everyone differently and your doctor can tell you if it is right for you. Also, consuming flax seed is no gaurantee that it will help treat your eczema. This is just my experience with it and I hope that my story may help others dealing with eczema find a natural way to manage it.
I was diagnosed with eczema many years ago. I was given a prescription for a medicated cream that I had to apply every day in order to reduce flare-ups. I applied the cream as directed and on my next visit to the doctor, my eczema was still there but I left feeling as if I was doomed to have to apply this cream from then on.
I was not happy at all about using the medication. The possible risks that were labeled on the product were dangerous and it wasn't doing anything as far as actually healing my eczema anyway so I stopped. My flare-ups continued and then I finally discovered something that actually worked.
During this time (I started up a fitness blog), a good friend of mine hired a personal trainer and he suggested that she begin taking 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil every day. I decided I would give it a shot as well as it couldn't hurt. After several weeks, I began to notice that my eczema was disappearing. My skin was no longer dry, itchy, or flaky. It didn't dawn on me right away, but I realized that maybe it was the flax seed oil, so I immediately researched the benefits of taking it. Wow, was I amazed at the many benefits including helping to heal eczema.
I take 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil every day now and eczema no longer flares-up. I'm sure I am benefiting in other ways as well. Needless to say, I am happy about flax seed and there is no turning back!
Type of Flax Seed I Take
I started taking Barleans brand flax seed oil. You can find this brand in any health food store in the refrigerated section. The personal trainer who suggested taking flax seed oil also mentioned that flax seed oil should always be purchased cold and kept refrigerated. I once tried another brand that was not purchased cold and my eczema flared-up again.
You can also eat the actual flax seeds but it is highly recommended to grind them before consuming. I have never tried eating ground flax seeds every day so I do not know of its effects but I would think it is safe to assume that you can get the same healthy benefits.
Some people do not like the taste of flax seeds or the oil, however, I think it is a nice, nutty flavor and you hardly notice it if you blend it into a smoothie or sprinkle the ground seeds onto your food. If neither the oil or the seeds appeal to you, you can also get them in pill form.
I take 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil per day.
