Frustrated Patient

I Am a Patient

I am a patient

Made to stand in a hall

Feeling just a part of the herd

As if in a cattle call

I am a patient

Keeping the phone free

Means no Internet, no faxing, hurried conversations

In case the nurse calls me

I am a patient

I really should be packing

My trip is on hold as I wait for that call

But I can’t leave with peace-of-mind lacking

I am a patient

With family and friends

They’re concerned too

Will the waiting never end?

I am a patient

Your job puts you in a bind

I know you feel frustrated

You’re running behind

I am a patient

But patient I shouldn’t have to be

When my body is a living coffin

For the offspring I longed to see

I am a patient

And when my child dies

My grief should not have to be subjected

To waiting room eyes

I am a patient

My pain you can’t know

You said it didn’t hurt

But later, the bruises show

I am a patient

I believe in God, I have a soul

Don’t call me an ostrich

When faith threatens your statistical goals

I am a patient

Your science is great

But it’s no excuse to be rude

When my child’s life is at stake

I am a patient

At your mercy I stand

As no other profession

Literally, holds my life in its hands

U Neek, This is wonderfully touching poem. I am a nurse who had to stop nursing due to medical problems. So, I have been on both sides and I know how it feels after numerous surgeries, procedures, etc. And, on the care giver side that can be painful too when you see the pain of a patient and even more so the grief of their family when things don't go well. Great hub!

Thank you, Pamela99. I appreciate your understanding from a nurse's side as well as the patient's. I'm sorry, too, that you have health issues that keep you from being the wonderful, compassionate nurse that you must have been. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm new at this and need all the encouragement I can get!
