The Real Facts Of Life

Updated on October 5, 2013

The Facts Of Life

What do you think of when someone mentions the facts of life to you?

Most people would answer that question with making babies and continuing the circle of life.

Boy meets girl, boy and girl have a little fun under the duvet and girl gets pregnant; Nine months later a new little boy or girl is introduced into the world and the cycle begins again.

When I am asked about the facts of life I see a different answer come into my head, I think more on an individual level and rather than try to understand the whole meaning of life stuff.

The real facts of life to me are simple, you are born, you live your life and then you die.

Whether there is an afterlife or not, I am quite sure that one day I will find that out but if there is an afterlife, then why do we have such a strong survival instinct?

Will I Live To Be 100?

How Long Will I Live For?

According to scientists and boffins, almost everything that we do is costing us life minutes, they say that, for example, every cup of coffee that you drink takes ten minutes off your life expectancy and if you are a smoker each cigarette that you smoke takes another ten minutes from your life.

If those statistics are true though I either had a life expectancy of one hundred and fifty or I must be gaining time back because in actuality it takes me around twenty minutes to drink a cup of coffee and it takes me around six minutes to have a smoke.

So if I drink a cup of coffee and have a smoke at the same time it takes a total of twenty minutes I lose ten minutes for having that smoke and ten minutes for drinking that coffee so the time that I am supposed to have lost on my life expectancy is cancelled out.

How Long Will You Live?

With all of the scientists giving out health warnings about almost everything that we eat and drink how long can you expect your stay on earth to be?

I am sure that there will come a day when scientists claim to discover a gene or something in our DNA somewhere that can tell us how long that we will live for, when a baby is born they will take a test and say your baby will live to the ripe old age of ninety.

Of course even if you had a gene that determined how long that your body is programmed to live for there would still be no way of knowing when you were going to die.

Accidental death, suicide, murder or natural disaster cannot be ruled out, your DNA could maybe say that you will live to the grand old age of ninety but you could go outside after reading this and get knocked down by a car.

If you took a test today and it came back with the result that you have fifty years three hundred and twenty two days to live, you would think that you are indestructible until that time, you would begin to take risks knowing that you have plenty of time left; again you could be shot in the head and it would be all over in a second no matter what your test result was.

There is no real way to know how long that you will live.

What Is The Meaning Of Life?

It is the age old question that has puzzled scientists and thinkers since the beginning of time, What is the meaning of life?

Is there a meaning to life, a reason for our existence? There must be, because if there is no reason then why are we here?.

I won't mention a certain hitch hikers guide to the galaxy book and the number it describes as the meaning of life and I won't mention the Monty Python movie that leaves the watcher more confused about the meaning of life than before they started watching it.

If you have a religion then you will believe that if you live your life in the way that your God wants you too, it will lead to an eternal life in paradise.

If you have no religion you believe that when you die there is nothing more it is all over, the fat lady has sung her song.

Even with religion I cannot find a reasonable explanation of life, after all if life is a chance for everlasting life I still don't get why life exists in the first place, what is the meaning of everlasting life whether in a Paradise or not?

Without religion we live we die game over, no reason for us being here in the first place.

Does there really have to be an explanation for why we exist? Maybe instead of worrying about the meaning of life we should all just enjoy what time that we have and get on with it.

How Old Are You?

Perceptions of age

Humans have a strange perception of age that changes as we get older.

  • Age 1-10 Anyone over the age of 20 Is ancient.
  • Age 10-20 Anyone over the age of 30 is ancient.
  • Age 20-30 Anyone over the age of 40 is ancient.
  • Age 30-40 Anyone over the age of 50 is ancient.

When we reach the age of 40 things start to look a little different.

  • Age 40-50 We begin to wish we were in our 20's again
  • Age 50-60 We begin to wish that we were in our 30's again.
  • Age 60-70-80-90-100's We stop caring about age and start criticizing anyone who is younger than us and berating them for having it a lot easier than it was in our day.

As the old saying goes age is just a number it is how old that you feel inside that really matters.

Is Age Just A Number?

How old are you?

It doesn't really matter if you are twenty years old or eighty years old. The grim reaper can come calling at any moment and put an end to all of your hopes and dreams in one swoop of his scythe.

We count our age in years rather than months, days, hours, minutes or seconds but as far as the reaper is concerned age is just a number and when your time is up, your time is up.

If you count from one to one hundred and fifty and each of those numbers in your count represented a year of your life, nobody would finish that count even though it is not a big number.

Our time is limited and short on this earth so we have to try and make the most of every second that we have.

There may not be a real meaning to life in general but we are here and we are here now, so why not try and make the most of it and live for every second that we have? enjoy what we have while we have it because we don't know when it is going to be over.

If we worry everyday that we are going to die then in reality life is not worth living, take life by the throat and live like there is no tomorrow because one day there will be no tomorrow.

How To Extend Your Life Expectancy

These days there are many different potions and lotions that help to make us look younger than we really are and some of them are really quite effective, there are surgeries to make us thinner, younger, give us bigger or even smaller breasts. There are operations that can change a man into a woman or a woman into a man and there are operations that offer an extended life to people who have life threatening illnesses.

There is no known operation for healthy people that will extend their life expectancy by any number of years and without surgery to rely on to extend your life expectancy people have to look at other ways to extend their time on earth.

A healthy diet, exercise, and a healthy way of life may extend your life by a few years but the environment around you can also be a major factor, you could be living a healthy life style in every way but if you live in a busy city and you are inhaling car fumes all day long, your chances of getting lung cancer increase just as much as someone who smokes twenty cigarettes a day.

No matter where you live or how you live your life the air that we breath in has so much man made pollution in it that we do not know how much damage it is doing to us.

The Real Facts of Life

When egg meets sperm a new life begins, it may last a few seconds or it may last for over one hundred years but the only certainty of that new life is that one day it will come to an end.

We love, we hate, we laugh, we cry, we worry, we die

Live life to the fullest because you just don't know when it will come to an end.

Immortality is only possible in name only, Elvis Presley will live on through his music, Hitler will live on through his infamy and maybe a thousand years from now someone will read this article and I will live on.
