Getting Behind The Wheel Drunk

Is It Really Worth That Drink?

The picture to the right makes you sick at your stomach doesn't it? Is it enough to make you stop and think before getting behind the wheel drunk? For some, yes and for those stupid and pig headed people the answer would be no. Such a shame that someone or possibly more than one person lost their lives or have been totally disfigured by one stupid move by getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

When we are out partying away the alcohol makes you think that you are superman or superwoman and the two or three ton vehicle you are about to get in is like a tank and can not be destroyed no matter what.

Well, the photo above shows differently doesn't it. Metal bends and breaks up very easy when hitting something at a high rate of speed and we all know that speed kills one way or another.

If you think for one minute that you are protected in that vehicle, alcohol can and will prove you wrong.

Please Drink Responsibly

Back in my younger years of drinking alcohol, I do have to admit I was of those pig headed people that thought I will never get in a accident. I'm good to go and will make it home safe after a night of drinking alcohol and lots of it.

I was by far no angel I can tell you that, but you know as we get older and hopefully wiser we start to think of what we are doing before we start to do it, like driving drunk.

When I got out of those partying years with my drinking buddies and settled down and got married, I must admit, "I never drove drunk". I had enough sense to not get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. I would not step foot behind the wheel because I knew that I was too drunk to navigate a vehicle in the state I was in. There are of course, the other people that have no fear of drinking and driving. That's the cool thing to do right? WRONG!!

If you don't treasure your life enough not to drink and drive then stop for a moment and think of those people you are putting at risk by driving them home, or an innocent person or people you may hit and kill while you are driving drunk heading home or heading to one more bar as many alcoholics do. Got to hit all the bars until I am plastered and can't see straight to drive my car.

Unfortunately, I know many people that do just that. These people that used to be my drinking buddies have now fallen off the face of the earth once I changed my life around and became clean and sober. We now have nothing at all in common sad to say, but that is fine with me because that is not my life style anymore.

So just a heads up on all those out there that get behind the wheel of a car after a night out drinking alcohol, it is not worth the few hours of feeling buzzed and drunk out of your skull when you may wake up in a hospital and being told you have killed someone or maybe even a entire family while your where driving drunk.

If you were told something horrible as this, do you think you would ever be able to live with yourself again. can you imagine just how many lives would be changed and ruined by your stupid thinking and driving drunk.

You maybe one of the lucky ones that this has never happened to, but one day it just may happen to you and your fun night out driving home drunk may be your last ride, unless of course you happened to be killed also and then your last ride will be in a Hearst going to your own funeral.

GET THE POINT YET? PLEASE SAVES LIVES AND DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!

Great hub and advice. So many sad stories of injury and eath caused by drivers who thought they were capable of driving safely while drinking.

Mark,

Another powerful message that you are sending out!!! I was always the designated driver (by default, and you know the reason why) I have seen how alcohol can make stupid people even more stupid! I am glad that you were never in an accident!!

I always think about the people who have been in accidents that involve alcohol. Not so much about the drunk behind the wheel, but of the innocent people who have been killed, injured or maimed by the drunk.

Just recently, a female colleague was in an accident due to a drunk driver. Her husband was driving, she was 8 months pregnant and sitting in the front seat. There 24 month old son was sitting in a car seat in the back seat. They were in the centre of the intersection when the drunk driver came blaring through the intersection at 100 km/h (speed limit = 40 km/h in a residential zone); blind sided the drivers side of the vehicle. The impact was so forceful that it sent her husband out HER side window, the steering wheel and column pinned her sideways into the passenger door, the baby in the back was crushed against the back passenger door while the front bumper of the car pinned the baby, the car seat and the diaper bag. He survives with permanent back damage, she went into labor and delivered the baby, she has permanent back damage and their toddler son is still in a coma and has a severed spine rending him paralyzed from the neck down. The drunk driver -- what happened to him? HE WALKED AWAY WITHOUT A SCRATCH!!

Please, don't drink and drive. If you don't value your own life, value those around you. They are innocent and should not be condemned to death or a life of lesser than full because of your selfishness and stupidity.

Mark, you've done another beautiful job of bringing to light the terrible effects of alcohol on lives. xox

Thanks, the clean life. I truly appreciate your writing this hub. I was driving during the 60s when things were different. There weren't so many cars on the road, the rules were easier to get around, and people seemed happier. But that part may be my nostalgic imagination. There is no other way. As you say: don't drink and drive. Just don't!

Thanks again.

Beth- OMG that is so horrible. My heart goes out to that family and to you Beth, beings you are a friend to them. You are so right, the drunk a****** never gets a scratch due to them being so limber from all the booze. I'll tell you Beth when i see someone drunk now it makes me sick and really tees me off seeing a drunk behind the wheel. I hope these hubs hit home to those that have this problem. Thanks Beth for all your support and friendship. Your the best:)

Maralexa, Thank you for your comment and yes i remember those days as well. People seemed happier as you said. I truly think that with everything going on in this world today people are so upset about money and jobs, etc that more and more are turning to drinking and or drugs to cope with their problems not thinking of the human lives that they may effect by their actions.

Nice to have met you as well.

Years ago, one of my instructors in mortuary college, Dr. Charles Petty (a fascinating and brilliant fellow) was also the Chief Medical Examiner of Dallas County Texas. Each year during holidays, a commercial would begin airing on television throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Dr. Petty would be featured, standing in a surg gown, next to an exam table in the morgue. His line was, "If you want to drink and drive this holiday season, I have a table waiting for you."

Sadly, I've been in that morgue more times than I can remember, not as a mortician, but as a transplant tissue recovery technician. The tables are often occupied by people who were either behind the wheel and inebriated, or were hit by a driver who'd been drinking.

It's always such a terrible waste of something precious, and could be so easily avoided.

Markie-valuable information. That was a powerful story that Beth shared as well. Keep up the good work. Your message is getting out there!

femmeflashpoint, First off, thank you for your comment and for putting you wonderful in site regarding drinking and driving. That was great and a wonderful idea of what Dr. Petty has done. That sure will get the point across I hope!

We have some things in common, regarding I worked in the morgue for 10years at a hospital I was employed at. Now, I am the Manager of a huge Cemetery in New Jersey and I have seen it all between the hospital and the cemetery. That should be placed on TV to open some of these drinkers that think they are indestructible and have now value of others lives.

Denise, yes Beth's story really upset me and I do pray for that family. Thanks for your comment and I will keep writing until I get the point across which may take the rest of my life, the way it is looking :(

clean life - one tour with us through a prep room or a morgue theatre could do an incredible amount of damage in all the right places.

All these years working in funeral service and transplant recovery, and it still breaks my heart and makes me angry to see death brought on by drunk drivers.

femmeflashpoint, Oh you are so right. So many people have no idea of what happens what someone looks like after someone has either had a accident do to drinking and driving or being hit by a drunk driver. They can't see past the glass and the future ahead because of being addicted to alcohol and are blinded to the outside world. Maybe when caught and given a DUI the courts should make each one visit our morgues and show exactly what happens when we drink and drive. Maybe that will wake these drunks up !!

Such a good message to share, and it would be wonderful if everyone read it and complied, but we both know what the odds of that are. I'm glad that my father and my sisters have never killed anyone despite all the accidents they had while drinking and driving. It would indeed be hard to live with yourself.

Another powerful hub that many need to read. Sadly, I do not think many really understand the consequences while drinking and driving. Just about a month ago, a well-known and loved family in our community were on thier way to a family picnic. The husband driving, wife in passenger seat, two sons ages four and seven in the back. Around 11:30am(yes, seriously) and underaged, drunk driver with his bottle of vodka still in the passenger seat slammed into them at an intersection kiliing the husband and kids on impact. The wife was still alive until their jeep blew up before the paramedics could get her out. True story and still haunts most of us.

The stupidity of drunk driving needs to end as well as under the influence of drugs.

Fantastic hub! Selfish, ignorant people who drink and drive really irk me. Especially since they kill or harm innocent people and walk away without injuries. Hopefully this hub can serve as a warning sign to the next person who considers to drive under the influence. Voted UP!

Voted up too. A very important message. I also believe it should be emphasised that no amount of alcohol is ok before driving, especially for young and inexperienced drivers. My 18-year old cousin was killed in a car accident when her friend, who had had only one drink collided with a stone gatepost. There's no un-doing the damage once it's done.

@ Vocalcoach- Thanks again for your comment. It really means a lot to me.

@ Louise- Thanks much Louise. Let me know what others you show think of it and if it hit home to anyone. Also, thank you for the UpUpup :)

@Kristif - I know the picture is bad, but in order to get this very important point across it must be shown. Hopefully it will scare the crap out of those that think they are indestructable.

@ Homesteadbound - Thank for reading this and I too am glad your family never hurt anyone or hurt themselves. You are right, many people will read this and just laugh and go right back to the bottle. Such a shame they just don't listen until it maybe too late.

@bwhite062007 - First off thank you for your comment and reading this although your story DID bring a tear to my eyes. What a horrible way to die and to wipe out an entire family a do to alcohol and being irresposible. If you don't mind me asking, "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE A**H*** DRIVING THAT CAR? Let me guess Nothing. That was really heart breaking to hear, I am sorry.

@ Sunshine - Thank you for commenting as well. I pray everyday that what I write will hit home and hopefully change someones life and get them out of their horrible life of addiction.

@catsimmons - I am so sorry to hear about your cousin. What a shame and the sad part with these people drinking and driving is that the passenger has no control over the car and their life is in the hands of a drunk.

@ Amynichter - thank you, and yes it is a shame to have to write things and show pictures as such. I much rather write about something more happy, but I have to continue trying my hardest to get this very important point across.

Brianna- Thanks, but I was thinking, that drunk should have been made to go to that poor family's funeral to let him see exactly what he had done to wipe out a entire family. This really bothers me because I can see in my mind what you said in the comment and I can see those innocent people in that car as it was hit. Very heart breaking to me.

I agree and so very heartbreaking. An entire family all in a days work and sadly people still make this decision. I don't think he would have made it out of that funeral as there is nothing but pure hatred for the driver and for good reason. I am a strong believer that he and others who make the same mistakes will get theirs.

the clean life profile image

the clean life 5 years ago from New Jersey Shore Author

Brianna, I can imagine that would not go over well and yes that drunk would never get out from that funeral alive. There has to be something that would punish the drunk drivers out there besides locking them up and the tax payers pay for there safe keeping. I wonder what other Countries do to their drunk drivers?

My Uncle had 3 DUI's and he had to have a breathilizer machine in his car to start it for 2 years. He was only allowed to drive this car too. If he was caught driving another car it was jail time. What sucks is that this is not a common practice. This is just something a judge set up because he needed to drive for his job. I think if more people had to go through what he did it would make for less drunk drivers.I remember a story back when I was in highschool about this lady who was standing at a street corner waiting to cross the street with her two daughters when a drunk driver struck and killed them. When the police investigated the driver he had been arrested for DUI 65 times. He had no drivers lisence it wasn't even his car. It just goes to show how flawed our system is and how selfish we have become that we don't care that we might hurt someone.

You have my vote up. I remember in high school seeing a car - if you could call it that anymore - that was towed to the local service station after having been in an accident that involved drinking. The driver was killed and the passenger left brain damaged. The image of the car is still burned in my brain, as I couldn't believe how flat it was and that two people had been in there. It really was quite horrific.

the clean life profile image

the clean life 5 years ago from New Jersey Shore Author

@ James Halpin, Thank you for the comment and having a breathilizer in the car in order to start it is a good idea but I am sure the drunks would come up with something to over ride it or use someone else to blow in it that is sober,. I'm not sure how it works, As far as the family that was killed it is unreal that that drunk had 65 DUIs and still walking our streets and driving too. He/she should of been put away years ago and throw out the keys forever and let them rot in jail. I truly believe anyone that have killed a person from drinking and driving should be made to go to the morgue or the funeral and look first hand of what they have done for the love of alcohol.

@ktrapp- Thank you so much for the Vote up and your comment. I too have seen the cars involved in drinking and driving accidents and it is enough to make you throw up.

James Halpin profile image

That was the thing though. He wasn't supposed to be driving. It wasn't even his car. He's in jail now. But it disgusts me that he had to take the lives of 3 people for someone to take notice and put him away. The problem was that there wasn't a set punishment for DUIs. Different judges would give different judgements.

I've seen the breathilizers set up different ways. But would you really want to put you mouth onsomething like that after he's been blowing in it. Its like using someone else's straw.

I tried to look up the article for the crash and I had to stop because I was just getting sick from the fact that there were thousands of DUI accidents with fatalties from repeat offenders.

@ James Halpin- Yes it is such a shame that it took the loss of 3 innocent people to put him away .Little to late now, The damage is done? He should of been put in the slammer on the 1st DUI in my opinion !
