Goals In Life

Finding an inner peace is not easy. Sometimes you need to go through many things in life to realize what life is all about. Some people really have to learn the hard way. Some are lucky to know from the start what they want to do with their lives.

It's Your Life

Where do you stand? Who do you blame if you aren't successful in life? Maybe you had a bad childhood. Maybe you never could do what you wanted to do becuase of your financial situation. Maybe you could have done more in your youth to have a better life now. I'm sure we all could have done something different in the past. We could have made other choises. We could have lived a better life without alcohol or drugs. We could have studied more. We could have worked harder. We could have been more helpful to people around us.

Do you know what? It's never too late to change. If you feel you haven't reached any of your goals in life yet, there's still time to do it. Maybe some people don't even have a goal. Start today and think about where you want to be in five years, in ten years and in twenty years from now.

Remember, this is your life. You were born and given a life. It's up to you to do something with it, something you want. It really is. Don't let anyone else tell you what to do. Some good advice along the way is always a positive thing, but you need to choose your own way and believe in what you are doing even if nobody else is.

My Life

I had the opportunity to grow up with two parents and three older siblings. My childhood wasn't hard, but my parents were absent and they worked many hours a week. I never knew what to do with my life. I went to school, I did what my friends did and just followed along the crowd. I never knew what to do when I had finished school. I had not really planned anything. I just wanted to grow up and have my own family and find a job that could pay my bills.

Miss Scary

I was scared of my English and German teacher. She always used to say: ”You have to know what to do with your life”. As an eighteen year old I didn't know that. I just remember her round, brown eyes staring at me and my friends who were sitting in the class room. She always wore her dark brown hair in a ponytail. She was a person we respected and you never argued with her. The fact that I should know what to do with my life felt like a big pressure on me. Somehow I can understand her today. Somehow she just wanted to help us. Somehow she made her students believe in themselves, but she also made some of us insecure. I would have wanted to be one of the students with a goal, but I was just a dreamer. In the life of my English and German teacher, there was no room for dreamers like me. I'm sure she affected me somehow. She was a good teacher. She made me study hard and I was afraid to say something wrong in English or German. If you gave her the wrong answer, she stared at you with those big, brown eyes and you knew you had to give her an explanation to why you didn't know the correct answer. Scary. She was Miss Scary.

The same year I graduated, I moved to Switzerland to improve my German and I continued to study the language for a couple of years. I now write hubs in English and I know I learned most of my English when Ms. Scary was my teacher. She must have done something good, but still I don't really know what to do with my life.

Maybe Ms. Scary just helped me along the way. I had been interested in learning languages before I had her as a teacher. As I got older, my interest in other countries and in people from other cultures increased. I'm glad I learned the languages I did. It has helped me to communicate with more people. Thanks the the Internet, the possibilities to meet people now are unlimited.

Reaching One Goal And Aiming For The Next

I have reached the goal to have a family and a job. I'm there now. Now I've come to a point in my life where I want to do something more. I'm asking myself :”Is this life?”. Yes, the life I have is now and I try to remember to live every day. Some days I just feel that there isn't enough time to do all the things I would like to. Some days even my own son wants to do this and that before he goes to bed in the evening, but there's no time. Working long days also affects my children. I wish I could be one of the moms who drops their kids at Kindergarten at 8.30 am and pick them up at 12.30 pm every day. I'm not one of those moms. Many days of the week my children need to wake up 6.15 am and they come home at 4 pm. There's not much time left of the day when you've had dinner.

That's why I'm asking myself now: ”Does it have to be this way and for how many years?”. I'm not sure if there's an answer to this. I just know that this year is going to be hard for me and my family because of my work and studies and because of the long working days my children's dad has. He's also building our house most evenings and on weekends. The house will be finished and I will finish my studies. I can see the light in that tunnel. What's next then?

I really want to do something I enjoy and I really want to spend more time with my children. I want them to have present parents. Maybe I can start my own company and decide when and how much to work. That's a dream I'm having. That's my goal for now. I'm not a good planner, but I really need a goal to aim for. In five years from now, I don't want to have someone telling me what to do.

Hi Made, great thoughts to ponder. A clear reminder for all of us. I think we all have met in here for a reason. Our community grows strong and we can check our throughts along with our fears and hopes. I really want to see that House of yours finished. That Magnus looks like a strong dude (man). Wishing you the best for you, your son and your husband. Take care Madeleine!

I'm sorry, but anyone who pressures an 18 year-old to "know" what they want to do for the rest of their life has their own issues. Some 18 year-olds do know, most don't. Some may get through 30 or 40 years doing something because of the pressure of people like her or the people in their own family, etc. Make no mistake, those people can still enjoy things and may even make a good living-- but they still don't know what to "do" with their lives. Lose the pressure and go with your own flow. Or not. I hope your life fits you, but don't stop dreaming. Good luck, Made. And, no, I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.

At my age and my situation all I can do is type. But my life... other people's dream. When I was young this was not my goal, nor were any of my successes. God passed me some balls and I ran with them.

Bill, this was a hub I just started to write. Sometimes words just come to me and I need to sit down and start writing. I never planned to write this hub. I'm sure you are a big inspiration for my writing and my positive thinking lately. I love and try to live by the PIPO-rule. Have a great week! I'll try to catch up with some of your hubs this week. :)

UnnamedHarald, I think the possibilities to do thinks you like and enjoy are unlimited. I just find it hard to choose one thing, and why should I? I would be so bored working on the same place for 30 years like some people do. Maybe they are happy with what they are doing and that's fine for me. I have had different jobs, studied different things and there are still so many things I want to learn and do. Thank you! :)

Beautiful hub, Made.

There are many a times that what we desire we do not achieve it. It sure is heart breaking but then I feel some other cross road will open up for us. Thus, finding peace in what opens up for us is the way to go rather than lamenting over the road that got blocked due to some hurdle.

take care, my friend!

Hi Ruchira, sometimes we have to choose between one way or the other. Sometimes we regret choises we have made. I really like to think that there is a purpuse for a ll the decisions we make. Thank you so much for taking time to read and leave an interesting comment. Take care! :)
