Having a Wiccan Funeral and Wiccan Burial
A Wiccan Funeral is Possible
With many different ways of life and spirituality in the world, shouldn't there be that many ways to have a funeral? Christians have their funerals and burial rituals, as do Muslims and Jews. Why not Wiccans? Can't we have Wiccan funerals? Of course we can!
If you are Wiccan and are writing a will or simply just thinking out your Wiccan funeral, this article will present some ideas for a green and truly Wiccan funeral. Remember that it should be about what you want, so take these ideas for a Wiccan funeral or Wiccan burial and make them your very own.
Have you ever been to a funeral of a loved one? You see your loved one laying there in a rather expensive and elaborate casket, dressed in their finest suit or dress. They don't even look like they did in life...or maybe they do. But you can't help but wonder why the fancy casket and large funeral service was really necessary? Was it necessary for the family to spend thousands of dollars to have toxic chemicals pumped into their loved one's body? Was it necessary for the family to spend even more money on the casket and also on the concrete vault that the casket will be placed in? What purpose do these expensive funeral resources serve but to preserve a body that is already dead and will never contain human life again?
Have you ever known someone who has passed and had a funeral that was inherently Christian-based but yet this person wasn't necessarily a Christian in life? If you are Pagan or Wiccan, you can set the standards with your very own green Wiccan funeral. Let's get back to our natural roots and ditch the wasteful, destructive resources that modern-day funerals have become.
A Wiccan Funeral is a Green Funeral
As practicing Wiccans, we have a reverence and respect for Mother Earth. This is a respect that affects our everyday life, including how we act, what we buy, and how we live our lives in general. This outright honor for Mother Earth should continue even after we die. Our body has shut down and our souls are moving on, and so we should leave as small of a physical print on this world as possible, even in death. Why donate to the millions of tons of concrete and steel added to the earth's soil every year? Why add to the billions of gallons of toxic embalming fluids added to the weary earth? I don't know about you, but I would like the greenest funeral possible...a green Wiccan funeral and Wiccan burial. One worth remembering for its simplicity, intimacy, and prudent resourcefulness.
Now there are cemeteries popping up all over the United States known as "green cemeteries & nature preserves". They are a place where people may be buried by their loved ones in a hands-on approach, directly into the earth, and then covered with the earth...leaving their loved ones to return to the dust from whence they came. Their bodies can then be used by the earth to sustain further life...instead of polluting the earth's soil and adding to its destruction like in an average modern-day funeral.
If you are Wiccan and you love the earth and honor her as I do, you will have a Wiccan funeral that is not only intimate and spiritual but very green. Choose a close green cemetery & nature preserve closest to you and let a patch of daisies grow from your body instead of leaving a mass of concrete, stone, and toxic chemicals in the earth.
But what about cremation? Isn't that a green Wiccan funeral?, one might ask. Not necessarily. I thought that cremation was the most green Wiccan funeral one could have; however, upon further research...I was wrong. Cremation does cut down on the mass amounts of steel and concrete added to the earth but it does add to the pollutants put into the air. Now if we compare resources that get put into the ground in a normal funeral compared to the gases that seep into the air in cremation, the former would probably outweigh the latter by a long shot. But if I have my choice, I don't want to pollute neither the earth nor the air. Wrap my body in a biodegradable shroud and put me into the ground in a nature preserve. Plant a group of sunflowers over my body and let the earth flourish even in this body's death.
Wiccan Rituals for a Wiccan Funeral & Wiccan Burial
For my Wiccan funeral, I would want to write the "last rites" (if you will) or the end ritual. Why? Because who better to write an insanely spiritual ritual for a group of close friends tailored to myself than myself? Exactly! No service in a church or funeral home will be necessary nor wanted. I don't want my family being upsold an elaborate service nor all of the bells & whistles that come along with picking out & using the services of a funeral home. Let's skip all of the selling and let's let my family & friends do the actual wrapping of the shroud and the burial.
When writing your own Wiccan funeral ritual, make it as personal to yourself as you can. Include your pantheon, matron goddess and patron god. Include the elements & Mother Earth, just as you were born from the earth's womb...you will return to the earth's womb. Write the ritual so that it is long enough but not too long. You want to make it light-hearted and thought-provoking...not boring and monotonous. Make it your own.
When planning the Wiccan burial, have your loved ones literally push the dirt over your shrouded body once you've been lowered into the ground. They can leave flowers or letters with you.
As for a gravestone, concrete or stone isn't necessary. Many people choose wooden gravemarkers. These are biodegradable and completely of-nature. They can visit the site at any time and see a beautiful and serene part of the world. This will remind them of you and your beautiful life & soul. This scenario is opposed to your loved ones visiting you amongst a field of stone and dead flowers. Which would you prefer?
