Flaxseeds, also known as Linseeds, are one of the oldest crops known to humankind. Both ancient Chinese and Egyptian societies were known to cultivate them and employ it in daily life. Flax is a unique plant that is grown for use in the textile industry and a food source. It tends to do well in cooler climates around the globe. In the West, textiles that are manufactured from flax are referred to as linen; a soft material that is light weight yet durable. Dr. Axe explains that flaxseeds encompass a plethora of health benefits due to the fact that they are a rich source of the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid, also referred to as ALA or omega-3. In addition, they are an extremely rich source of vitamin B1, dietary fiber, manganese, and micronutrients. How To Prepare and Store Ground Flaxseeds


There are two types of flaxseed, golden and brown. They are extremely similar, and both contain the same amount of necessary Omega-3 fatty acids, so it does not make much difference which one you purchase. In order to obtain the full benefits, it is extremely important that you either buy ground flaxseeds, or grind them yourself. It is easier to buy flaxseeds that are already ground, but those are not generally available in local stores. You may have to invest in an electric coffee grinder like the one below. I have found the Krups brand to be much more durable because flaxseeds tend to wear down grinders quickly so be warned.

Ground flaxseed is known to go rancid, so grind a small bowl-full at a time and freeze the rest. Flaxseeds are very good in a salad or smoothie having a nutty taste.


Conclusion

Ground flaxseeds are an abundant source of fatty acids, which provide the body with amazing health benefits. They are also a terrific source of fiber, minerals, and vitamins, and are extremely low in both cholesterol, and sodium. In my opinion, flaxseeds are a super food.
