To those who don’t know, munggo or balatong is the Tagalog name for mung beans. Others refer to mung beans as choroko, moog, mung, green or golden gram.

In the Philippines, it is common to cook munggo beans as soups. They are boiled and mashed into a starchy mixture; to be stir-fried later with tomatoes, garlic and onion.

Munggo beans can also be made into desserts or flour just like rice. They make tasty noodles and food wraps .


Munggo beans are tasty and very satisfying legumes. They offer a powerhouse of nutrition to those who enjoy them. It's amazing how few of us know the health benefits munggo beans bring.

Health benefits of munggo beans

Munggo beans are good for our cardio-vascular health. A lot of its nutritional components work together to benefit our hearts. For instance, fiber and folate help regulate our blood sugar and cholesterol levels. With 0-cholesterol, very low saturated fat contents and Vitamin C, munggo beans help reduce the risk of heart ailments as well as diabetes. Its potassium content helps regulate our blood pressure.


Munggo beans are energy-giving as well because of its protein, iron and carbohydrate contents. This is another benefit for weight watchers. Eating munggo beans will make them fuller longer with higher energy levels.

Munggo beans are anti-cancer foods. Their anti-oxidant contents, Vitamin C and Thiamine help strengthen our immune system. Thiamine also helps our body cope with stress as it promotes our defense mechanisms.

Another form of vitamin B, folate (folic acid) is another nutritional benefit we get from munggo beans. This vitamin helps in the development of an embryo during the early stages of pregnancy.

Munggo beans are good for our digestive health, as well. These beans are rich with dietary fiber which helps move our bowels. More so, munggo beans are very easy to digest which is good especially for the young ones.

What useful information you've shared here. I had no idea these were useful in making dessert and flour and are amazingly versatile and incredibly nutritious. Makes me want to sprout some mung beans. Up all the way.

I'm not sure if we have ever eaten mung beans but we are bean lovers and all types of beans have similar health benefits like the fiber, containing protein, etc. Up, useful and interesting votes + will share. Will have to see if I can find some here.
