Soybean's and their health benefits.

In the last Fifty years Soybeans have been touted as an effective ingredient in the prevention of diseases and negative conditions such as Breast Cancer, Cholesterol, Brain injuries and Diabetes. The use of Soy Beans for their health benefits has not been a recent innovation, we know that Black Soy is well established in traditional Oriental medicine as a treatment for diabetes.

Recent studies in the last decade have highlighted the versatility and effectiveness in incorporating Soy into people's diet. Soy based medicines and good dietary practices containing the Soy, could reduce the amount of money spent on other more expensive products and treatments.

Help improving Diabetic quality of life.

The practice of maintaining a healthy balanced diet, is hugely important in preventing diabetes and managing the condition. Soybeans are becoming an increasingly essential food for a healthy diabetic diet. The Soy bean does not contain starch, a complex carbohydrate whose absorption by the body raises blood sugar level. Soybeans are also low in fat, high in fibre and a good source of protein. The quality of Soy protein is almost equivalent in quality to those found in meat, milk and eggs. For an individual who suffers with a diabetic condition the incorporation of more Soya can help balance their blood sugar.

Soy contains moderate amounts of soluble fibre, which is believed to help equalize blood sugar levels in diabetics. This happens by increasing the feeling of "fullness" This combined with a reduction in the rate of carbohydrate through digestion, prevents the sugar rich Carbohydrates from overloading the bloodstream. This will improve blood sugar control and decrease the Diabetic's insulin requirements.

Regular physical activity and a healthy, balanced diet including the incorporation of Soya has been proven to be very effective in reducing the risk of developing the condition and living with type 2 conditions. Diabetes is a condition that needs effective management, the use of Soy beans in a healthy diet can decrease the risk of other chronic diseases like end stage renal disease and strokes.

Being overweight and unhealthy can increase insulin resistance within the body and makes blood sugar management more difficult to control. Health professions would suggest that keeping the right weight for your height is important in helping to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it is also essential that if you have the condition the management of your BMI will help you lead an effective lifestyle.

Heart Disease

As mentioned in the Soybean's beneficial use with the Diabetic condition, the use of Soy can lower the risk of further damage to the Heart. If the Soybean can reduce the weight of the sufferer, then the amount of stress and strain, on the damaged organ can be reduced and in time the condition could be improved. If Soy can reduce the levels of Cholesterol then the patients general health can be improved and his condition can me managed by adapting a better food diet with Soy heavily involved in maintaining the Heart's health.

Usefulness in Cancer.

At the start of the 1930's, researchers concluded that soybeans contain natural isoflavones, these compounds appeared to have an anticancer effect in people of an Asiatic ethnicity. Critic's of the use of Soybean's in the use of Cancer treatment stress that Soybean's could cause harm in mimicking the levels of estrogen that are thought to be crucial in the creation of Breast Cancer.

There have been conflicting studies over the years as to the Soybeans effect on women recovering from Cancer. The studies cite that the introduction of Soy into the women's diet can either reduce the chance of Cancer returning by as much as a third, or encourage the cancer to return by 36%. The use of Soybeans in the diet of Cancer sufferers needs further study, and it's findings in the 1930's would need revisiting to see the results in a more modern setting.

Soybeans are now used in a wide variety of products but it's use in a healthy diet has yet to be fully realised and utilized. If the Soybean can be incorporated into the global diet it could offer a very useful and cheap form of disease prevention that could raise peoples standard of living. Of course assuming the Soybean is safe for use over the long term is poor science and smacks of a quick fix or a false miracle cure. Further research in the use and application of the plant is always a prudent option. With health spending on the prevention of Cancer, Diabetes and Heart disease running into Billions, Soy offers a universal ingredient in the fight against these conditions.

Great information Asp52. Here is a little information that may help. My wife fought breast cancer for ten years. I learned a lot. Soy can mimic estrogen in its effect on the body and on cancer cells. If the breast cancer is estrogen receptor positive, that means estrogen can connect to it and feed it. The possibility is that soy could do the same thing. Therapy for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer is to block the receptor so that estrogen can't connect to the cancer cell. I hope this information helps a bit.

Good presentation and good information. Thanks.
