Endoscopic Image of Esophagus with GERD
Gastro esophageal reflux disease or acid reflux is the condition of the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This gastric content due to its acidic nature damages the esophageal mucosa. Most of us would have suffered acid reflux one time or other in our lifetime. This is also termed as heartburn as you feel an uneasy burning sensation behind the sternum.
Though an occasional heartburn is rather harmless, care should be taken if this recurs once a week. Chronic acid reflux can lead to esophageal ulcer and even esophageal cancer in some cases. One of the causes of GERD is increased secretion of digestive acids which may be due to certain foods, obesity, or even tight-fitting clothing. Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, trouble swallowing, chest pain, nausea, regurgitation etc.
There are a number of treatment options available to treat this condition. Before opting medical treatment, early cases of heartburn can be corrected with changes in diet and adopting healthy eating habits. In case of chronic conditions, medication or surgery are the treatment options suggested by conventional medicinal system.
Change in diet will include avoidance of caffeine, smoking, spicy foods, fast foods, soft drinks, etc. Also a gap of two hours or more should be maintained between supper and going to bed. Elevating the head of the bed is very effective in preventing the reflux of gastric products into esophagus. Adopting the above mentioned process has been very successful in mitigating the symptoms and experiencing considerable relief in almost 95% of GERD patients.
In case of medical intervention, the common drugs are proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole etc. These are known to stop acid secretion in stomach. Other alternative is the use of antihistamines like ranitidine, famotidine etc that can reduce acid secretion in stomach. Antacids are also helpful in treating heartburn.
The Nissen fundoplication is the surgical option of choice for GERD. The process restores hiatal hernia and strengthens the sphincter muscles.
