What is Herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is also known as phytomedicine or botanical herbal medicine. It is used for medicinal purpose and refers to using plant’s seeds, leaves, roots, fruits and flowers. Centuries ago, herbal medicines were considered as the only medicine to cure from health related problems. Today also, people opt for Herbal medicine, since they consider it a natural means of getting relief from their health problems.

What is its history?

According to the history, plants had been used for medicinal purposes. The medicinal uses of plants are mentioned in Indian, Egyptian and ancient Chinese writings. To heal from diseases or wounds, Africans and Native Americans used herbs as their treatment and other used Ayurveda in which herbal therapies were used. Researchers discovered that people who belonged to different countries used similar plants for the same purposes. Currently, it is estimated by the World Health Organization that 80% of people from all over the world prefer to use herbal medicines regarding their health problems. In the last 20 years in USA, the cost of prescription medicines led the people to buy the herbal medicines. In Germany, 70% of Germany physicians recommend their patients to use Herbal medicine. Thus, the use of herbal medicine has increased today.

In various cases, scientists fail to find what exceptional ingredient in a particular herb works to cure the disease or illness. There are many ingredients in herbs and they work all together to produce a beneficial effect. There are many factors to determine the effectiveness of an herb. An example would be, the type of environment like, (climate, soil, bugs) in which a plant grows will affect it. Herbal medicine is beneficial in many cases. It is used to treat many diseases like, asthma, arthritis, migraine, eczema, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome and chronic fatigue. Herbal medicines are taken under the guidance of a doctor, pharmacist or a herbalist; because they are medical professionals and they will be able to suggest the most appropriate herb for you according to the symptoms.

What are the most common herbs and how are they effective in treating specific ailments?

The most common herbs are -

St. John’s wort: Studies prove that, this herb is an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression and promotes a more positive mood.

Kava kava: It is similar to St. John’s wort. This herb help to cure depression by elevating the mood and a treatment for anxiety as it will promote relaxation.

Valerian: This herb is good for those who suffer from sleep disorders and has lesser side effects as compared to sleep pills.

Gingko Biloba: This herb is used for better circulation of fluid to the brain and it is also proved that Gingko Biloba will help maintain sharp memory and can prevent from dementia.

Echinacea: This is an effective herb and has antibacterial and antiviral properties that will help fight colds and coughs. Echinacea also helps to make the immune system to become stronger.

There are some things to consider before using the herbal medicine -

  • Firstly, one must consult to the doctor or an herbalist before buying herbal products.
  • Secondly, buy herbal medicine from trustworthy stores.
  • Lastly, take only the recommended dosage for remedies.

Are there any experts in herbal medicine?

There are experts in herbal medicine and are well trained in 4-year, postgraduate institutions that combine conventional medical science with medical/clinical training in herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutrition and lifestyle counselling, such as pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and surgery. Herbalists, naturopathic physicians, pharmacists, doctors, chiropractors and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine all use herbs to treat illness.

The benefits of the herbal medicines are endless. All he therbs have their own unique quality and each one has different effect on the body. However, most often people buy herbal medicines online from the internet as it has a wide range of products and options to choose. Though, there are no harmful side-effects of these herbs, but it is important to buy the herbal medicines/products that are real and pure so that they can give perfect results.
