Herbal Solutions for Hives

Herbal options for treating hives

Hives are characterized by pale red bumps or swellings on the skin. They typically show up in clusters or groups and can appear anywhere on the body. They can be as small as corn kernels or as large as several inches. They burn, sting, but most of all they itch; incessantly. Diet, stress, or even simple infections can cause an eruption of hives, and once they are present, they are difficult to eliminate. Identifying those things that trigger your hives can be tricky, and often doctors resort to prescribing antihistamines to block the histamine response in the body that is responsible for hives in the first place.

Herbal solutions for hives run the gamut from creams to teas and everything in between. Herbal remedies offer antihistamine properties as well, and can augment a comprehensive plan by your doctor to treat your hives. If you are continually bothered by hives, consult your physician for a treatment plan, and add some herbal remedies to your hives treatment arsenal.

One of the best treatments for hives is to soak in an oatmeal bath. While you don't want to soak in a hot bath, as hot water can irritate the skin and make hives worse; you can soak in a lukewarm bath. Put two cups of old fashioned oatmeal in an old white sock and let the water from the faucet run through the sock into the tub. Additionally, you can look to commercially prepared creams containing oatmeal and apply to the itchy area.

Nettle is an example of an herb that acts as a natural antihistamine. Look for nettle capsules in most health food stores. Take two 300 milligram capsules three times a day for seven days. Discontinue the treatment if you don't see improvement in that time frame.

Green tea contains potent levels of strong antioxidants. These compounds are called catechins. These can help in stabilizing the cell membranes and preventing breakouts of hives. Drink a cup of green tea twice a day. Green tea is safe to drink indefinitely.

Smooth a thin coating of lavender essential oil onto acute cases of hives as needed. Lavender has a calming effect on the nervous system. Apply directly to the hives for relief.

Herbal solutions for hives can provide helpful relief, but if you continue to be plagued with episodes of hives, consult your physician. You may require more aggressive treatments such as steroids. Avoid taking herbal remedies without first consulting your doctor.
