Home Care for Sprains and Sports Injuries

When a person is versed in homeopathy they become strong in their belief that the body has the wisdom to heal itself. Whether it is to spike a fever to create an unfavorable environment for germs to multiply, or to experience soreness after an injury to give time for the muscles and tendons to heal.

We all experience injury from falls, over-lifting, over-work, and over-stretching when overenthusiastic about playing ball, tennis, running or any other sport. We are inspired when Springtime comes to go outside and really work on self improvement.

Yet, when we do not do physical stretching to prepare the body, or spending too much time or pushing oneself too hard then the body will pull back and respond in a number of ways.

Today, we will concentrate on the physical injury of a strain. When we apply too much force upon the limbs, ligaments, and muscles that attach to the bones and joints. This can occur with a straight force or twisting motion, as when playing tennis. Sometimes the strain can occur from an awkward movement and pulling the muscle in a way that is not expected or unnatural.

Even the voice can experience a strain from screaming too much at a sports event, singing too long in the chorus or for cheers, going to a range that is unaccustomed and too far a strain for the tone of the voice muscles.

If you think about it, we also strain our eye muscles by staring at the computer screen too long, especially when we don't blink and wet the eyes. We strain the eyes when we do close up work like sewing, intense reading, or miniature work, or driving long distances in the car.

We can also strain our neck muscles when sitting in the wrong position for too long, or when we wake up and say, "Gosh! I must have slept funny" and then you can barely move your head.

With the computer use, we can also get carpal tunnel syndrome in our wrists and forearms and again, strain muscles from over use and repetitive motions.

A major type of sprain and strain to the body is tendonitis also spelled tendinitis

We know that inflammation can cause pain and heat to tissues and cells in the body. It is a reaction to some irritation. The tendons that run throughout the body are composed of fibrous tissue cells that connect like rope or cords from bones to muscles.

Tennis elbow (epicondylitis) was first recognized by doctors more than 100 years ago and it is estimated that up to half of all tennis players will suffer from the condition at some point. Tennis elbow is the inflammation of the tendons in the elbow area and is caused by overuse and injury. Tennis elbow almost always effects the tendons out the outside of the elbow.

Treatment often consists of Rest, Applying Ice or Heat packs, and/or keeping the body part immobile or even consistent gentle movements.

A Few Basic Homeopathic Remedies

HANDY FOR ANY SPRAINS OR INJURIES ~~>>

Calcarea carbonicum: Sometimes we can determine the correct remedy for the body type. When the person's appearance is on the heavy side, with un-toned muscles, fair skinned and tendency for flabbiness and sweating, especially on the head at night. These Calarea types typically feel chilly and have weak ankles in general, so twisting, turning, or spraining is commonplace.

Arnica montana: At the onset of injury every homeopath or home care person reaches for arnica from their home remedy kit. It is a great remedy for shock and trauma after a slip or fall. Usually called for when there is a black and blue area that does not want to be touched. Arnica ointment may be applied externally, in addition to taking pellets by mouth.

Bellis perennis: Super remedy for stretched ligaments, and well known to help woman after giving birth when there has been great strain, force and effort to deliver a newborn. The muscles feel very sore. Strangely, we learn that this remedy favors left-sided injuries, and there could even be swelling with the inflammation.

Rhus tox: This is wonderful remedy for muscle over-use, like when you have moved into a new home or apartment and just carried a ton of boxes up and down. This remedy is great for those over-lifting strains. A hint, is that this is an acute type remedy for the Calcarea carb personality type. So, after rhus tox, it may be appropriate to follow up with the calcarea. The rhus tox injury may feel like a stiffness that hurts painfully on initial movement, but as the muscles loosen up they feel okay. Then after too much movement, they will return to the painful condition again. So, you can think about sitting in one place for a while and how stiff you feel when you first get up. Rhus tox is wonderful for arthritis symptoms when those ligaments and muscles feel a strain from wet weather, too.

Bryonia: A great remedy for when any minute or tiny movement of any kind causes extreme pain. After that fall, sprain or trauma the person wants to keep perfectly still, even to lay in the dark and not be bothered by anyone. In addition, by lying ON the painful side this is even better because then the area will not be moved at all. The bryonia types can be quite thirsty.

Ruta graveolens: This remedy is one that I automatically think of for those sports strains and sprains to ligaments. Below is a full report on the application and benefits of ruta. It is also a lovely plant to have in the garden.

Ledum: When there is severe bruising and haematoma this remedy that is from the rosemary plant can be applied externally and taken internally as pellets. Ledum has a particular sensation of pain shooting or moving upwards; like from ankle up the leg to calf or knee. It is especially useful for after a puncture type wound.

The beauty of homeopathy is the many choices for each condition. It is best to match the sensations and symptoms to the closest matching remedy. Take only one remedy at a time and watch its action before moving on to another remedy.

More About RUTA FOR SPRAINS

A Little Bit About Homeopathy

Homeopathy has been practiced over 200 years in many countries around the world. There are foundation principles explained in Hahnemann's ORGANON OF MEDICINE.

The principle of "likes cures likes" helps explain why we are matching symptoms to a particular remedy that will exhibit these same symptoms in the injured individual.

The minimum dose means that you need the smallest possible amount necessary to stimulate the body to react and promote the immune system to work toward cure.

Ruta Graveolens is a strongly scented evergreen shrub which has many homeopathic medicinal uses. It belongs to the family Rutacea and is about 20-60cm tall. It is commonly seen in Mediterranean region, Macaronesia and Australia. The leaves are blue or green in colour and it is bipinnate, or tripinnate with a feathery appearance. The flowers are yellow in colour with 4-6 petals and 1 cm diameter. The fruits are 4-5 lobed capsules with numerous seeds.

CULINARY AND NUTRITIONAL VALUE

Ruta Graveolens is been widely used in Middle Eastern Cuisine in spite of its bitter taste. The leaves and oil are used in many beverages e.g.: Italian grape spirit. It has also been widely used as an insect repellent because of its strong pungent smell. The oil has been used as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics such as soaps, creams & lotions.

MEDICINAL USES

Ruta Graveolens contain a number of active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins and essential oil. Rutin a flavonoid present in it has the ability to decrease blood capillary permeability and fragility which is concerned with its eye action. Alkaloids and Coumarins present in it have antispasmodic action. Ruta Grav is an excellent remedy for pain and soreness in the bones, joints, tendons, and cartilage. International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, Greece explains detail about its clinical power to overcome degenerative problems in the knees. Ruta Grav is used as a 1st Aid treatment for sprains, injuries, strain, bruises bones, pulled ligaments. Sprains or fractures can also be well treated using Ruta Grav. It is also a good remedy for ankle sprains, soreness in the feet, ankles, achilles heel, and lower back pain.

The Book titled ‘Homeopathy for Musculoskeleton’ includes excellent sections on symptoms associated with Ruta Grav and other important remedies

Thanks Debby Bruck, I enjoyed reading this hub and it surely can serve as an encyclopedia of natural cures. About arnica--I remember when I was a ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park back in the late 50's and early 60's I learned from an old Ute Indian that heart-leafed arnica has natural oils that are great for relieving rheumatism.

WOW! You are a dear to post this lovely comment. Wish more folks knew about these wonderful remedies for self healing. Yes. Arnica is 'Pink Sensation'

Wolf's-bane or Monkshood and was known by mountain climbers for healing, because they noticed that after walking along the trails the plants would spring back after being stepped upon.

Hey Debby that was an amazing read! Another feather in Debby's hub- crown! :-) Well, certainly the pain alleviating medicines in homeopathy have lot to do but have given little less attention in face of chronic malady treatments. Symphytum is an addition to above listed medicines I would say. Helps great deals and even orthopedic surgeons use Symphytum in homeopathic potency.

Dr Shreya ~ I would take your advise any day. I built this hub around Ruta, as I wanted to highlight it. It is true so many good remedies. Symphytum is excellent for bone healing. Now I will look closer for its use in tendonitis and other muscle sprains and strains. Back to the materia medica for me. Love, Debby

Kateso 6 years ago

Great article Debby - I have experienced the effects of the marvelous Ruta on more than one occasion and wish more people would be open to try these simple, easy to use, cost effective forms of health care.

I also broke my thumb a few years back and the hospital told me that I would definitely need physical therapy (due to the location of the break) - however after using Arnica AND Symphytum my break healed so well, the doctors were amazed - in half the time they expected AND no physcial therapy required.

Thank you for the article.

I had tendonitis in my hands due to RSI (Repetetive Sress Injury) caused by excessive typing.

I had run around allopathy doctors for 6 long years.

Bellis Perennis had literlly freed me in a week from that suffering.

Deb,

The timing of seeing this could not have been better. I had two surgeries over the Christmas holidays to repair/rebuild a compete rupture of the scapholunate. Now in a cast for 6-8 weeks I just returned from the health food store with some Ruta. I will post an update when I know my prognosis. Thx!

Hello Pete. What a lovely message. Remember that homeopathy works when symptoms match the energy of the medicine. Please document in a healing diary what you are feeling in body, mind and spirit. Take really good care of yourself, giving plenty of time to recuperate until you can gently get back to your whole active self.

Take into consideration what Dr Shreya suggested regarding symphytum, and possibly other remedies for surgery such as arnica, staphysagria, calendula and others. We only do one remedy at a time. Wishing you a swift recovery. Blessings, Debby

Michele 5 years ago

Can anyone tell me if Rhustox 30C would be more appropriate for systemic tendonitis, (enteritis inflammation of muscule, tendons attached to bone)than Ruta Gravs.

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 5 years ago Author

Dear Michele ~ As you can read here, each remedy has a complex of symptoms exhibited by the individual. The beauty of homeopathy occurs because we can try many remedies individually to test if it is a good match for the individual without side-effects. Thus, we receive feedback over the course of a month and if the remedy has no effect it is not the correct match. However, we might try a number of different potencies first. Then, move on to the next potential matching remedy. Thus, if a person has already tried the ruta grav at a low potency daily over the course of a month with no change, then they might try the rhus tox for a while. Dr Banerji gives severe cases the same remedy for years and years and has even measured pathological improvement to the tissue, like regeneration of bone and diminution of tumors. Other remedies such as hepar sulph, calcarea carb or calcarea phos may be supportive cell salts. As I said before, many homeopathic remedies may potentially fit the overall case and specific symptoms. Start writing a journal of your pains and feelings. Find a good homeopath to help you. Blessings, Debby

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 4 years ago Author

Dear Rajesh ~ It sounds like you have been though a lot for a serious condition. Your story would need to be told to a professional homeopath with all modalities, history, types of pain and what lead up to the surgery. Most doctors today use arnica for bruising, which occurs from surgical procedures. After that, the conditions which make the area feel better or worse, like position, temperature, movement and the like would need to be accessed. Please read through this article more carefully and see all the aspects that ruta addresses. Remember there are many homeopathic remedies that cover injury and an appropriate one depends upon each individual. Wishing you well on your healing journey.

Rajesh Athooli 4 years ago

Thanks a lot for your advice. The main problem I feel is the stiffness in the knee after surgery. I am undergoing physiotherapy for the past two weeks. In fact one homeopath friend advised me Ruta.

Debby Bruck profile image

Dear Rajesh - As you know, these energy medicines will not do any harm if taken only for a short amount of time and you observe your symptoms carefully. If your homeopath has given you advise, then do report back to him. I would also be pleased to learn if it helped you get through the healing after surgery. Blessings, Debby

Debby Bruck 4 years ago Author

Dear Bonty ~ I'm glad that people like you have researched homeopathy for at home care. Millions of people in India and around the world think of "Homeopathy First" as a baseline to initiate the body's own healing mechanisms.

If you have found ruta helpful for your injury, there does not seem to be a reason to change to another remedy. If the injury does not completely heal, then you might research some others. Most people know all about arnica for black and blue injuries to the soft tissues. This remedy can be purchased over the counter in creams and gels. Athletes commonly use arnica. Please review the notes above on the different homeopathic remedies available. Blessings, Debby

I have been suffering from muscles strain for 1 and half years especially in left side of the body. when I lay down on bed at night while sleeping, fits in left leg and upto hand, at same time my left side in all becomes strain and vibration/fits/trembling begin because of this situation I am out of control/unbearable/painful. after 2 or 3 minutes I recover by pressing my leg and hand. Please guide me and propose and effective medicine to resolve my this problem.

thanks

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 4 years ago Author

Dear Muhammad, Since this condition has gone on for so long, we consider it chronic, rather than a simple sprain that should have recovered over time with rest, massage, and warmth. Your body has not returned into balance and some underlying root cause may need to be discovered.

It would be wise to speak with a professional homeopath, who may be able to figure out what has happened and match this energy to a remedy.

Contact me for a reference. Sincerely, Debby

Linda M 4 years ago

Dear Debby, love this hub! I woke up two days ago having 'slept funny' and unable to move my head, with huge pain in my neck muscles. I'm unsure how this injury fits in with what you've written - whether to try Arnica (but it wasn't a fall), and Ruta seems more for tendons but this is muscular. When I work my way down your flow chart I end up with 'Ruta or Rhus'. It's not better for movement either. Help! Also, can you describe a 'tearing' pain for me? Many thanks, Linda

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 4 years ago Author

Hello Linda ~ Glad you found me here. I've had that happen to me over the years. Sleeping in an odd position, or perhaps with window open and the air or fan above blowing over the exposed face, head and neck. Then, suddenly in the morning the pain is most obvious on any type of movement. When you go to drive the car, it's difficult to turn around to check behind or the blind spot.

The pain will dissipate in a day or two. But, massaging, hot cloths, gentle slow movement may losen up the neck. I'm not thinking arnica would help. Rather, rhus tox for better limbering up, BRYONIA is much worse on any movement, and ACONITE for caught in a cold wind. The ruta usually works for STRAINS. I hope that gives some clues. For physical pains, a low potency like 6X repeated every couple of hours or 6C can help the body return to normal. Let us know how you do and what you decided was best for you. All the best, Debby

Joanna 3 years ago

I've just had the plaster removed after 6-7 weeks - broken arm at the wrist. The muscles in arm and fingers are very stiff and painful from the long time without use. Would Ruta gaveolens be the appropriate remedy here to promote healing along with exercises? In what dosage? Great if u could comment. Many thanks. J

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 3 years ago Author

Hello Joanna - You seem to be saying you've had a "plaster cast" on your arm. Surely, the muscles would be stiff and even emaciated from inactivity. Usually, in a situation where we find pain on movement, I automatically think of Bryonia; and if there is pain only on initial movement that warms over time with use we think of Rhus fox.

Typically, taking a low potency such as 6C or 30C gives us a chance to realize whether the remedy has initiated some improvement. Because, if we don't see something after 1-3 days in an acute situation, then we would be looking for a different more appropriate remedy to fit the case.

Regarding dosage, many homeopaths individualize the case. The main reason to repeat the remedy is when we feel improvement, but the energy of that dose wears off over a certain amount of time. Thus, if an injury has just occurred and we feel intense pain at the time of accident, a remedy may be given every 10-15 minutes for a few doses until the energy takes hold. Then taper off to every 2-6 or more hours to repeat.

In the situation that the injury occurred many weeks or months ago, the doses typically only get repeated once or twice per day, as needed. Basically, if there is improvement, no need to repeat the dose.

I hope this answer will help guide you for self healing. Sincerely, Debby

Of course, always seek medical attention and ask your doctor for your specific situation.

saraswathi 3 years ago

Dear Debby, 2 weeks ago I injured my right foot but I am not sure how. A week ago I was prescribed ruta g. 30c for 3 days but there was only a very mild improvement. Yesterday I saw a podiatrist who discovered that the plantar plate cartilage in my foot is completely torn in half. Such an injury would take a long time to heal (if it does ie without surgery)- would taking ruta g alongside help? If so, how many times a day? Could you kindly advise?

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 3 years ago Author

Saraswathi - I do not give medical advice. A consultation by a professional homeopath would be able to assess after gathering information both subjective and objective from the client. Does the person experience pain? If so, what type of pain: burning, smarting, tearing, twisting, tender, sore, aching, pulsating, etc. and what makes it better or worse, such as pressure, stretching, movement, heat, cold or position.

Don't forget that arnica is the number one remedy for injuries. You can see finding a remedy is an art form as well as medical form. Hope you are doing better. Blessings, Debby

Dear Debby

Any advice for me? I had a fall on my left shoulder with my arm stretched to stop a ball. I tried arnica for a few days and then nothing else due to urgent priorities elsewhere. It's been 4 weeks and pain in my shoulder upper part is bad but only while moving in some particular directions. Doctor has sent me for physiotherapy but 2 sessions into it, still have to see the results? Physio says its bad muscle spasm Should I try out Ruta?

Debby Bruck profile image

Debby Bruck 3 years ago Author

Dear Victor - I'm very glad to hear you went to the doctor for an examination and were able to attend physiotherapy. A homeopathic consultation would gather a great deal of information about the quality and intensity of your pain injuries, how it affects your movement, plus emotional issues that could lead to a more precise remedy selection. With thousands of remedies from which to choose, only a discussion could bring you closer to the right choice. Since homeopathic remedies are non-toxic, gentle and act when needed. A person trying Ruta or other similar remedy from over-the-counter could determine in a day or two whether it had any effect. Good luck. Debby

Thanks for posting this! I plan to get this remedy for my collection. I forgot that Ruta Grav could be used for ligament injury. My husband just reinjured his leg tonight so I intend to start ruta grav tomorrow. Tonight we'll begin with Arnica Montana since that's all I have. He might do with a few doses of hypericum too as it seems to be a "nervy" injury.

Information about homeopathic remedies can be found in source material from the Materia Medica and are available for universal reading. I have been studying homeopathy since 1988. This information comes from my personal experience and background as a life long student of the healing arts. I attribute proper sources to their owner.

Debby Bruck 2 years ago Author

Dilip - Please find yourself a holistic practitioner who can guide you. Many people do not realize that the homeopathic potency can make a difference on whether a remedy does or does not work. Therefore, any of the selected remedies you have already tried: Bryonia, Ruta, Rhus tox may be more effective in lower or higher potency. In addition, someone may guide you regarding water doses and frequency. It is important to take a full homeopathic case to determine if there is something in the environment triggering your problem, something in the diet or other factors. The best of luck, Debby
