Best Way To Help Relieve Back Pain Quickly.

It Soon Creeps Up On You!

Where my body is concerned I have always been quite fit. But recently back pain has slowed me down, and left me with a sickening ache all down the back of my neck, through my lower back and legs.

Obviously I have suffered the same flu and colds as everyone else and had various illnesses over the years but my general body health has been pretty good.

When I was 33 I had a major kidney operation, and have always suffered from Asthma and Bronchitis, especially as a child.

But bone stiffness or lack of stamina seemed to have passed me by until now.

Recently I have noticed that at the grand old age of 54 I don't seem to be bouncing back quite as quickly!

I do exercises every day, but if I sit at the computer for too long, or walk to far I suffer badly the next day. As I mentioned, my back gets stiff and it can travel up to my neck too.

So, what's the best thing to relieve back pain?

Video by rmorfen.

To Exercise or Not?

Obviously most of the time exercise is the answer. But you have to pace yourself. What do you regard as exercise?

Because I don't drive, I don't see walking as an exercise. Its more of a necessity. But of course walking miles every day can take a toll on your bones and back. Add on top of that the fact that you are carrying shopping bags and then the weight adds up.

Sometimes its best to leave out your normal exercise routine, stay indoors and just rest. I know its hard when you have so many things to do, but sometimes we need to just put our feet up and take it easy.

Be careful how you sit. Try to either place your back straight against the chair, or even elevate your legs higher by placing them on a footstool. Anything to take the strain away from the back muscles.

Back Pain caused by bad posture.

Writing's a Pain!

A lot of us use the computer for work or writing for the internet like me. And of course this means hours sitting at the computer.

I know its been said before, but you must do two things to make sure you stay healthy.

1. Get up and walk around at least once an hour for about ten minutes. Stretch or exercise on the spot.

2. Make sure you get a chair that supports your back. I think that's where my bad back has come from. I tend to lean forward when keying in the work, and its pulled on the muscles in my back.

I have also started placing cushions on and around my back to support it, and put a box under my feet to raise them slightly. This way the weight is not so heavy on my legs too.

Exercise. Which ones Best?

There are many exercises that you can do for your back. Yoga is probably the best because it is gentle and can help with flexibility. Pilates is good too but only when you feel that you have loosened up your muscles and are ready to take the next step. But its said that you should only do this with the help of a professional as you have to learn the right moves properly.

Swimming is really good. As its gentle and water helps to keep you buoyant. But even taking a gentle walk can help strengthen the back muscles and also the legs.

Tai Chi is a gentle exercise and promotes physical and mental well being.

Whichever exercise you start to do always make sure you have a proper tutor to insure that you do it properly. The wrong moves can do more damage than good.

Ginger a great anti-inflammatory!

Home Remedies For Back Pain

  • Rest is the best to start with before you try any other remedy. You need to allow your back time to heal.
  • Cold Compress such as a washcloth and ice.
  • Heat. You can buy over the counter heat pads, or a good old fashioned hot water bottle is just as affective.
  • Herbal teas such as Ginger acts as an inflammatory but aspirin is also good. But always be careful not to take too much as it's a blood thinner. Always check out other medications that you use to make sure it is compatible.

The Backlife Machine.

Source

The Backlife Machine.

The latest in back pain technology is called the Backlife Machine. Its the only device that has been clinically proved to help back pain.

So How Does It Work?

If you have ever been to a Chiropractor or Osteopath you know that the one thing they do is place their arms under your legs as you lay on your back and slowly rotate your pelvis.

This is known as (CPM) or Continuous Passive Movements.

When you have lower back pain as I do, you realise that the more you try to relax as you walk, the more the muscles tense up.

The machine emulates the way Doctors control the movements and the machine is now used in hospitals and clinics all over the world. Its said that 12 minutes a day can really make a great improvement.

So, if you have tried exercises and they don't seem to work for you, then this is definitely the way to go. The Backlife Machine has helped gymnasts and other sports men and women to get back to their every day life, and even helped with their sports performances.

Backlife Machine for Back Pain

It Just Takes Time.

Just remember that back pain can last for weeks or even months. And if it isn't treated properly can cause serious problems down the line.

I am doing the exercises at the moment, and we will see how well it works. If not, I am definitely getting myself one of the Backlife Machines.

Always see your Doctor to check exactly what the problem is before starting an exercise program.

Great info there Nell. I have never had any real back pain, guess I am lucky but been having some therapy with neck pain and one of the exercises with those stretchy bands sure works my back, bet it would be a good one for those bothered so thought well I will just use it for prevention! lol

I watched a film a couple days ago about a woman named Dale over there, know her and what I mean?

You look great!

Nell, I hope that you back pain is gone. This is an interesting hub, my husband has lots of back pain, but I am not surprised at any pain he has after all that he has been through. I wrote about his accident in count down to a miracle.

I believe in weightlifting, to build up and strengthen the muscles in the back. I use free weights, and exercise according to Dr. Joyce Vederal's 12 minutes a day work out. I love this book.

Voted up and shared.

Happy New Year my friend.

Nell, great article! I have suffered from occasional back pain for years and found the two things that help most of all are: 1.stretches, night and morning and 2. sleeping on a good FIRM mattress.

Voted up on your useful info, and I hope you feel better very soon!

Nell Rose profile image

Thanks beth, yes I had a bad back years ago, and it went away, but now it really is painful again. I will try the stretches out tonight before I go to bed. I do think it could be my darn mattress! lol!

Ugh, back pain is the bane of my existence. I've always struggled with it, as I got older I found out I have scoliosis and my spine is rotated a little which explained a lot of my difficulty in the past. But ever since I got rear-ended hard a few years ago in a traffic accident, my back has been all jacked up due to cracked discs in the lower back. It took months of physical therapy to get me moving again. These are some great tips. Really for me the key is to not be inactive for too long-- stretching every day, getting up every couple of hours, etc. The back machine looks really interesting.

Nell, yes, yes, try a new mattress. We had the same lumpy, dilapidated mattress since we were first married and it was pure hell on my spine. This last year we broke down and purchased a brand new mattress -and springs!- and I have not had one incidence of back problems since. I can't swear this is the cure for everyone, but it is definitely worth a try. Good luck hon! (and yes, keep up those stretches!)

Very informative hub to help someone, who has back pain!

You have mentioned some very helpful and practical tips. I had suffered with back pain few years ago. And my doctor had advised some physiotherapy, namely Diathermy and Traction to lessen the pain. After the pain was gone, then only, I was advised to do specific exercises suggested by the physiotherapist, which is now a regular routine now. As we age, we must do specific exercises for mobility of bone joints, howsoever healthy and fit we may be.

Thanks for sharing this useful hub!

I think i've told you that i have a herniated disc, L5 and it is painful at times. I am big on stretching. I bring one knee to my nose then the other, then both. You must do some serious stretching before you do this. I would like to have the Backlife machine. I am sorry to hear about your back, and you are so right-on about sitting at the computer too much, i am guilty too. BTW who was the nut who coined the phrase, " Life begins at fifty? " Hee. Take care...

lol! Ruby! yes who was that nut? they do say that fifty is the old age of youth, and the youth of old age! don't know about that, it seems to me that the second you hit fifty your body starts to yell at you! I will try the exercises as I do a lot of stretchy ones already, yes that Backlife machine would be great wouldn't it? thanks as always, nell

Great hub Nell. Sorry to hear you've been suffering from back pain. If you walk and carry heavy shopping have you considered using a backpack rather than a bag? This distributes the weight more evenly and is much better for your back

I had lower back pain a few weeks ago and it drove me mad too as I´m not used to it or having to be careful about my movements and this pain really limited me. I just took an ibuprofen but if it comes back again I will try the stretches you recommend. Hope your back gets better soon :)

Excellent hub, Nell. And you bring up a very important point about where or not to exercise. I suffer from back pain occasionally, along with some nasty sciatica. Nell, when I saw your article, I had to read it. After work today, my back has been very sore. It comes from sitting and working very hard, physically over several hours. As a writer, I, too, have issues with my back due to extensive sitting. If I don't exercise regularly, it is much worse. I do stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as seeing a chiropractor on a monthly basis. I have recently taken up swimming, and that has helped immensely.

Nell, an excellent informative hub. I was off work for four weeks last summer with this problem.

My back muscles would contract and go into spasms, anti-inflammatory drugs helped, but I also needed PPIs, I found yoga exercises very beneficial. In my case, the back pain was partly due to years of bad posture, it doesn't help being tall, also an occupational hazard in my line of work. I know many of my younger colleagues are also suffering from back pain so I'll be sharing this. The back lift machine looks interesting.p

Interesting and informative hub, Nell. Whenever I get a back twinge I immediately do some stretching exercises and knock on wood, they take care of the twinge. I am, so far, fortunate not to suffer from back problems but I have enjoyed reading your suggestions in case I ever have problems. At the computer I do support my back with a pillow on the chair and I do elevate my feet also. If I don't, by ankles will swell. LOL Oh the joys of getting older!

Hi Nell. A tip top hub as usual. The Backlife Machine is first class! My wife Pauline has had back pain for years. I bought her a machine as a surprises, it is a revelation. She uses it 3 times a week for 15 minutes. She walks much straighter / taller than she did and is ever so pleased with it. Yes it really does work. I have had to stop her lending it out to friends to let them try it out, otherwise it will be worn out:-)

Best wishes.
