How Using Progesterone Cream Can Ease the Symptoms of PMS, Perimenopause, and Menopause
Easing the Symptoms of PMS, Perimenopause, and Menopause
Most women have suffered through or will soon experience the unpleasant symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome, perimenopause, or menopause. The feelings of tension, sleeplessness, mental fogginess, irritability, cramps and headaches can severely interfere with a woman's ability to perform well at work and maintain strong relationships with family and friends. When the symptoms become too much, it's time to explore treatment options. For some women, going on birth control pills is recommended but not all women want to take synthetic hormones and worry about the effect on their bodies. Another option to consider is natural progesterone cream. Progesterone cream can be purchased over the counter, it's chemical propertiies are identical to the progesterone produced in the body, and it can offer tremendous relief from symptoms.
Causes of PMS and Perimenopause Symptoms
What is it that causes so many women to feel so rotten during the week or two leading up to their period? Although the causes of of PMS have never been scientifically proven, there are many theories. Some believe that PMS is due to the interaction of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, produced during the normal monthly cycle, with brain neurotransmitters. They say that these interactions can lead to the many unpleasant symptoms.
Others, like Dr. John Lee, author of the book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause," believes that PMS is caused by what he calls estrogen dominance. Dr. Lee believes that estrogen dominance occurs due to the many estrogen-like compounds polluting our world and also due to anovulatory cycles. When a woman doesn't ovulate during a particular menstrual cycle, there is very little progesterone produced in the body, which can lead to dominance of estrogen in the body. Dr. Lee has shown that many women routinely have anovulatory cycles due to stress and age.
Age is the primary cause of anovulatory cycles so it's no surprise that as a woman nears menopause, the cycles become less regular and estrogen dominance can be more pronounced. This, Dr. Lee suggests, is the reason for many of the symptoms of perimenopause as well.
Estrogen dominance is more about the relationship between estrogrogen and other hormones like progesterone and testosterone than it is about simply too much estrogen. When hormones are balanced, estrogen is balanced out by progesterone. If progesterone is too low, estrogen will dominate in the body and produce many uncomfortable symptoms.
Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance
The symptoms of estrogen dominance are wide ranging and can be very uncomfortable to the woman suffering through them. When I was younger I rarely had issues with PMS. My cycles were extremely regular and I'd pretty much just sail through them without incident. Howver, as I've gotten older I'm finding myself in a different situation. Suddenly, it's as if my body is betraying me. I've personally suffered through many of the symptoms below, including thyroid issues. I'm not sure if all of my symptoms are due to estrogen dominance but I do know that using natural progesterone cream along with taking other measures has helped alleviate many of them. Following are some of these symptoms:
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Allergies and sinus congestion
- Depression with anxiety
- Fat gain around the abdomen, hips, and thighs
- Foggy thinking
- Mood swings
- Water retention
- Polycystic ovaries
These are just a sampling of the many symptoms that have now been blamed on estrogen dominance. Using progesterone cream to balance your hormones can provide tremendous relief and help you feel like yourself again.

How to Use Progesterone Cream
Progesterone cream is very easy to use. Simply massage about half a teaspoon into your skin twice a day. This is done during the last half of your menstrual cycle, after you ovulate, or on about day 14 or 15 of your cycle. If you're already in menopause, you can use it from days 7-28 of your cycle with a 7 day break. The instructions for use are on the package as well.
I've actually had instances where I was feeling intense levels of premenstural tension. Almost immediately following the application of the progesterone cream, a feeling of relative calmness would come over me. It's that effective! It's also very easy to use.
Other Things to Try to Relieve PMS
In addition to using natural progesterone cream there are many other things you can do to help balance your hormones. One of these is stress reduction. As difficult as it might seem, it's imperative that you find time to laugh and relax each day and to take some time for yourself. If you're feeling too tired, take a break from working out and say no to some commitments. You don't have to do it all. Getting enough sleep is also important. Try to get to bed by ten o'clock and get eight hours of sleep. Finally, eating well is very important. Some people feel better when they eliminate gluten and other allergens from their diets. It's best to eat whole foods and cook from scratch rather than relying on processed or fast foods.
By using natural progesterone cream, managing stress levels, getting enough sleep and eating well, you can tame your hormonal issues.
