How much does laser eye treatment surgery cost?

What are the typical costs for laser eye treatment surgery? Price can vary greatly and depends on a lot of factors. But on average, it can range from $1500-$3000 for each eye. These should include all the services associated with the surgery, before and after. Depending on where you get the surgery done, it can include pretreatment testing, surgery fees, facility fees and follow up visits. Make sure to ask all the questions about what the surgery costs cover. Find out about any hidden fees as that can drive up the cost per eye.

Some factors that contribute to the laser eye treatment surgery costs are:

  1. the kind of eye laser operation you decide on as there are many types
  2. the kind of surgical instruments they will use
  3. if the post op and follow up visits are included in the total cost
  4. if your medications are extra or included
  5. where you live and in what country you're in affects the price
  6. the skills, reputation and experience of the surgeon

Since most medical health insurances view laser eye surgery as not necessary and consider it a type of cosmetic surgery, it will most likely not be covered with your insurance. Although, some medical and vision plans offer a discount, but it all depends on your plan, so check with your plan manager for specifics. If you are not covered, most places will have a payment plan or financing available to alleviate the total cost of the laser eye treatment surgery.

Beware of discount places, especially when your eyes are concerned. The outcome can be irreversible. Always read the fine print on the cost and procedure details and thoroughly research the surgeon you are considering. I'm just picturing that episode of King of Queens where Carrie gets laser eye surgery. Doug went with one of those discount places and used a coupon, and well, you'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen the episode. Here is one clip and another clip. Hopefully, you'll be a little smarter or luckier or both.
