How to Get Disability in the U.S.
How to Get Disability
This is not for a specific insurance company but from the United States government. First what makes me exceptional at writing these type of articles. First I am extremely detail oriented. An example of this following. I am extremely intelligent and have a great memory. Also I am a perfectionist so I keep adding more that I learn and try to make it easy to understand.
Albert Einstein said “If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.” I see very complicated explanations that are completely wrong. The example of being detail oriented is the following. 32 ounces is 2 pounds but it is not a quart. Why? Almost everyone does not know why. A quart is 32 fluid ounces. There is a difference between ounces and fluid ounces. One measures weight and one measures volume.
Recent addition! You can get processed in days instead of months for certain severe medical conditions. There 225 conditions for which the process applies. Contact Compassionate Allowances Conditions.
Now when it comes to U.S. disability I like to say that that there are 2 kinds-- easy and hard. I use this since it is simple to understand. But I will also give you their explanation of it. One view of the first is that you paid your dues but got disabled. The look at the second one is that you are severely disabled and did not pay your dues.
Here is what they say about this at Social Security:
The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities.
Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.
Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.
So if you have worked long enough then you get the first one. How long? That may be closely guarded secret. I do know that you have to work for 10 years (paying taxes) to get social security income. Also I have learned that taxes work out great that for people that live a very long time and work out badly for people that don't live a long time.
To get the easy one, is much easier since you have paid your dues. Now with the hard one they want you to be very disabled and have very little or no income. I know someone on the easy one who got miner brain damage in a fight and he gets over $1,200 a month. I know one that is in the hard one. He had to prove that he has schizophrenia and gets over $700 a month.
Note that I am not a lawyer so I cannot give legal advice. Also it appears that things have changed a lot. There are 50 million people in the U. S. that have disability income. There are 319 million in the U.S. so 16% are on disability. It used to be that someone can tell someone the information that they need to know. But that cost a lot of money for people's time. Note that disability becomes (same amount) social security at age 66. See Retirement or Social Security Options and Choices.
So now a computer can take the time to take the information and you don't need to pay it. So that is the big change that has happened, you have to do it online. That can be very difficult. In fact let me give you a change. I guess it could be from stealing other's identities. Before when they gave them an address they believed it. Now they check with Experian and see what they say since they trust them, not you.
Here is what Experian says about themselves:
We are the leading global information services company, providing data and analytical tools to our clients around the world. We help businesses to manage credit risk, prevent fraud, target marketing offers and automate decision making. We also help people to check their credit report and credit score, and protect against identity theft. In 2014, we were named by Forbes magazine as one of the “World’s Most Innovative Companies.”
If you are turned down you can get an appeal by calling 1-800-772-1213. Now since this can be very complicated procedure, applying online, they have private companies that do it for you. Of course they do it for a fee. So I called one that advertised in a small town paper to see what their fee was. Their fee was to get 25% of the back amounts they owe you and they get nothing for present payments. Note that it said the average wait time to talk to a person was 1 minute. I had to wait about 10 minutes.
So you have to weigh the cost against what it will take you to try to do it yourself. You may be able (ask them first) to apply online and get turned down and then use a company like this to appeal them. They only get paid if they get the disability for you so they use all their knowledge and experience to get it from you.
So the best of luck in getting disability. I did read that some immigrants can get it. Of course that means some cannot get it. One place says they are overworked so if that is true, be kind and patient with them. That is good advice if they are not overworked. My experience shows that the federal government is the best place to work for.
I was a chemist for the U.S. federal government. Right at the beginning one wanted to show me how great it was working for the federal government. He said that one time the accounting people wanted to talk to the head of the chemistry department. They had a problem since he was not depositing his checks. He would take his pay checks and just put them in a drawer and he never deposited them since he did not need the money. So they told him to deposit the checks occasionally so they do not get too backed up.
Since you will have a lot of time if you are disabled, here is an article about what you can do to become happier. Happiness is not under the control of the conscious mind. If it was, then everyone would be extremely happy. It is under the control of the subconscious mind so you need something that has a powerful effect on the subconscious mind. See Is the Key to Being Happy Being in the Present Moment.
Also I talked about taxes being better for the person who lives longer. I have many articles about living longer. Some talk about the Silicon Valley geniuses coming up with fancy ways to live much longer. But most ways to be healthier and live longer means not being a slave to your senses. Here is an article called How to Live 30 Years Longer.
