That's where Dr. Abravanel's body type diet & lifestyle nutrition plan comes in. Updated from the 1980s, Dr. Abravanel's book expounds the theory that weight gain is driven by metabolism. Your metabolism is influenced by one of four main glands in your body: thyroid, adrenal, pituitary or gonad. Which gland dominates your metabolism also controls where fat is deposited and stored on your body.

Does it sound too good to be true? That's what I thought when my friends told me about the book. I only carried 5 extra pounds on my frame that was easily hidden with clothing, so I wasn't really looking for a weight loss plan. Although I suffered from lack of energy and mood swings, I had chalked it all up to being over 40 years of age.
My friends had all lost weight, felt much more energetic and no longer complained of mood swings. Their success left me intrigued. Could this nutrition plan also work for me? I decided to investigate.
I purchased the Kindle version of Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet & Lifetime Nutrition Plan on Amazon. I read the opening chapters which included many anecdotes from Dr. Abravanel's patients on their success with his nutrition plan. Then I did the test, which clearly pointed to my metabolism type: thyroid.
At this point, I put the book down. You see, my food cravings were directly linked to my lack of energy and mood swings. According to Dr. Abravanel, it is a feeling that we crave when we eat certain foods and not the food per se. The foods we crave actually stimulate the dominate gland that drives our metabolism. This gives us a boost of energy and feeling of well being, but also causes a gradual weakening of the dominant gland. The diet requires that one at first eliminate and then drastically reduce the foods that stimulate the dominant gland.
When I learned that the foods I loved were actually hurting me, I became discouraged. Could I really eliminate or reduce the foods I craved? Dr. Abravanel asserts that we use these foods as drugs, which is why we must eliminate them until metabolic balance is achieved in the body and cravings are eliminated. Overcoming these cravings is essential to becoming and remaining a balanced, slender, healthy individual.
Interestingly enough, there is a strong connection between the foods we crave and eat and where the fat is stored on our bodies. Your main fat location is directly related to your body or metabolism type and thus the activity of your dominant gland. Like all organs, fat responds to the hormones circulating in your blood. But the fat in different parts of your body responds primarily to different hormones. That's why each body type stores fat in its own unique locations when the dominant gland begins to weaken due to overstimulation of eating the wrong types of food for your metabolism.
So your body shape is in indication of what is going on inside you. That means that fat must be removed metabolically. This diet balances your metabolism so fat can be removed from these areas, be it your hips, butt, thighs or belly.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Abravanel recognized that most of his patients needed a tailor-made diet and lifestyle change to boost their health and weight loss after he had seen fad diets fail for so many.
We each have our own unique way of processing food. Some people can eat more food without gaining weight. Each person has different needs in terms of protein, carbohydrates and fats. A common way of classifying body types is by categorizing them as ectomorph (slim and lanky), mesomorph (round and plump), mesomorph (thick and muscular). But the problem with this classification is it doesn´t tell why the person is slim, round or muscular.
Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine also have their own ways of classifying body types. All of these can be beneficial. But Dr. Abravanel´s system classifies individuals according to which of their four major glands—the pituitary, thyroid, adrnal and gonadal—are most active or dominant in their metabolism. This isn´t the first time such a system was proposed. Back in the mid part of the 20th century Dr. Henry Bieler, a physician and nutritionist, classified different metabolisms by a dominant gland that affects how food is metabolized.
This concept makes sense, as many of us have probably already noticed that we are all born with a certain body type. Dr. Abranavel takes it a step further by explaining WHY we were born with that specific body type.
Once you know your body type you will begin to better understand your metabolism and why it is quick or slow, efficient or inefficient in the way it processes food. You will also understand how your body reacts to 3 types of food: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Lastly, you will learn how to use each of these foods to boost your health and weight loss, also the weaknesses of your particular metabolism and how to combat them with diet.
Are you still doubtful? If so, commit yourself to just 30 days of Dr. Abravanel´s body type diet. If you don´t lose weight in the right places and feel much more energetic and confident after the 30 day trial period, then you can walk away and forget you ever heard about this concept. No harm done, right?

Personally, at first I found my diet to be daunting. The foods that I happen to crave turned out to be the very foods that are harmful to my metabolism. But after the initial adjustment period, I found that the diet made me feel so good and the results were so obvious that I ran out of excuses not to continue. And what´s more, I found that by tweaking the diet to my needs, it actually wasn´t so hard to continue. In fact, now I find that when I return to my old way of eating I begin to feel lethargic, moody and blah. Who wants that? As far as I am concerned, the basic principles of Dr. Abravanel´s diet keep me looking and feeling my best.
Once you know which body type you have, you will see how to strengthen your metabolism by consuming the types of foods proper for your type.
Basic Features of the Body Type Diet
1. You will have a varied, balanced and healthy diet. In Dr. Abravanel´s diet, you will never be asked to eat grapefruit every day for a month, for example. You are allowed to eat food in all of the categories with moderation, placing special emphasis on the categories that will maximize and balance your type of metabolism. It is also considered a fairly low-fat diet, with 30% or less of the calories coming from fat and only 10% from saturated fat. The diet includes protein, carbohydrates and lots of fresh produce.
2. On Dr. Abravanel´s diet, you must never lose sight of health. You won´t eat just to lose weight. You will also eat to maintain good health.
3. Always keep your body type in mind. Fad diets are often extreme, either “high carb, low fat, less protein” or “high protein, high fat and no carbs”. In this diet you won´t go to such unhealthy extremes.
Dr. Abravanel contends that the Food Pyramid puts too much emphasis on carbohydrates for most metabolism types. Certain body types can assimilate carbohydrates well while other metabolisms need more protein, as you will soon learn.
More principles of this diet:
1. Eat a wide variety of real foods including fresh produce.
2. Always eat protein and carbohydrates in the right proportion for your metabolism
3. Eat just enough fats and oils for health and taste, with a minimum of saturated fats that are found in fatty meats.
Dr. Abravanel also times your eating according to your metabolism and suggests herbal teas to balance your metabolism and promote dieting effectiveness.
Cravings tell a lot about what is going on in the metabolism. Cravings are irresistible desires for certain foods, whether they be sweet, fatty, spicy or salty. According to Dr. Abravanel, cravings are not specific. Your body may actually be craving protein and you feed it ice cream. In the end, you gain weight without providing the nutrition your body needs.
So what´s the solution? In my case, as a thyroid type, my body craves sugar. But when I feed it plenty of protein, my cravings diminish enough that I can control them. Eventually, the cravings fade enough that they become controllable desires. It just requires a little patience and perseverance to see results from the program.
