Herbal Solutions for Low Immunity

If you find that you are constantly getting sick from the latest virus, you have two options, complain, or tackle the problem of low immunity. The second option will help you stay healthy. When your immune system is functioning properly, it is able to fight off the onslaught of various bugs, viruses, bacteria, yeast and so forth. A compromised immune system is much like a fort with no soldiers. There is little to no protection when you have a low functioning immune system.

There are several factors that can lead to low immune system function. Chief among these are: lifestyle, pollution, poor diet, inadequate vitamin or mineral intake, poor sleep and stress. In essence by the time your body has dealt with all of the effects of these harmful elements; it has little left over to fight with.

Herbal medicine can help your immune system in two ways. First if you become sick, herbal remedies can lessen the duration and intensity of an illness. Secondly, herbal remedies can build up and bolster your immune system. These types of herbs are taken "tonically" or are considered "strengtheners", over the long term, they improve your immune system.

Astragalus is a popular immune booster herb that originates in China. It is rich in polysaccharides, which increase the activity of many different kinds of immune system cell, including macrophages, T-lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. Astragalus is best used for long term, chronic low immunity. It takes several months for it to be effective, and works in the bone marrow where your immune cells are made. Look for astragalus tea, tincture or supplements in local health food stores and take according to package directions.

Ginseng is a potent long term immune system booster. Ginseng comes in a standardized extract in capsule form. Look for ginseng supplements that contain 5 percent ginsenosides. It is optimal to start out with lower doses taken between meals, and work your way up to the 5 percent. A typical consumption cycle is 3 weeks on, then 2 weeks off.

Reishi are a type of mushroom that helps to overcome low immunity. These potent mushrooms are highly esteemed in the Orient. Look for encapsulated reishi in local health food stores, and take according to directions. Not only will reishi help your immune system, it also helps with overall energy levels.
