How to improve your memory power effectively?

Unleash your brain power

’Your memory is a monster; you forget—it doesn't. It simply files things away. It keeps things for you, or hides things from you—and summons them to your recall with will of its own. You think you have a memory; but it has you!” –John Irving

‘Where did I keep my keys?’ I frantically searched for it everywhere. I squeezed my brain, but I just could not remember it. This was my nature of forgetting things. My husband used to tease me as an ‘absent minded professor’.

This was some years ago when I forgot where l kept the keys, important documents, warranty cards and make myself frenzied with worry.

But now I have learned the trick of remembering things!

When you forget about important things, it makes you tense with worry. Forgetting things makes you nerve wracked and stressed. When you keep persistently forgetting you are marked as inefficient and incompetent.

What are the common things you forget in your day to day life?

  1. Your car keys, important files and your mobile phones.
  2. You forget about the appointment you have.
  3. You promise your spouse a night out, but your tight work schedule makes you forget it.
  4. You forget the birthdays of your children and your spouse which makes them feel angry with you.
  5. You forget to lock the door and spend anxious time at your work place.

What are the reasons for your poor memory power?

  1. You do not pay attention to the essential things.
  2. You do not concentrate.
  3. You are disorganized.
  4. You are absent minded.
  5. You are not focused.

When you keep forgetting your important work in your job, you lose the trust of the management. When you forget what you learned in your school\college, it has a negative outcome in your exam results. When you forget your wedding anniversaries and the birthdays of your children\spouse, it causes unnecessary resentment.

You do not remember where you placed your keys or mobile phones because of your habit of keeping it wherever you are. It might be in your kitchen, your bedroom, your shelf, or even your bathroom. When you do not have a specific place to keep things you tend to forget about it. Always have a particular place to keep a particular thing and you will find it easy to remember it.

When I was forgetting where I kept my things, I followed this simple steps and it has helped me remember it. I keep my keys in the drawer in the TV stand and now when I think of keys I think of the TV stand. I keep my important files in a specific place which makes it easy to remember and I have a particular place for a specific thing, which has made it easy for me. Do not keep things anywhere, but have a specific place for it.

Why do you forget birthdays and anniversaries? It is because you do not register it in your mind.

Do you know that there is an alarm clock in your brain which reminds you about the important things?

You must keep telling yourself about the things to be remembered and the rest will be done by your brain power.

You can keep your brain vibrant by eating healthy food. What are the foods that energize your brain?

  1. Blueberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Broccoli
  4. Fish
  5. Dark chocolate
  6. Yogurt
  7. Nuts
  8. Eggs

You should add these to your daily diet and you will find your brain revitalizing. When you mind is confused and muddy your brain becomes inactive. Yoga and meditation can help to calm you and you will find your brain doing its optimum best.

When you are at your work, you should be completely focused on what you are doing. Your concentration should be peaked to make you remember things. A good night sleep will also help your brain to be energetic. Relax your mind by listening to good music.

Memory power makes it easy for you to do your work. When you forget your most important work, it makes you feel stressed and tensed. Keep your mind busy, not with negative thoughts but by having positive thoughts.

You should like what you are doing and you will never forget. You never forget your favorite TV shows, do you? Why is it so? It is because you like it. When you like something, you remember and this is a good trick to improve your memory power.

Mathi, I love your John Irving quote. Thanks for dealing with this topic; and for suggesting foods that help. I also wrote on this topic. My article is called "Everyday Activities to Boost Memory Power." Cheers!
