How to Live Life One Day at a Time - My Mantra for Being Thankful Living

Source

One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus...

Remember the old gospel song, "One Day at a Time"? That's my mantra, my saying to help me be more positive. My saying to help me get through the day. One day at a time, sweet Jesus....

I have that very saying on my Facebook profile page. Why? Because sometimes that's the only way to get through a day.

Sure, I think about the future and make plans for it, but the fact remains that we still have to get through the day that we're in right now. Sometimes RIGHT NOW is all that matters.

I reminisce about the past, often too much. Similarly, I often worry too much about the future. Those times when I obsess too much on the past or the future are times when I have to force myself to shut off those racing thoughts and focus on now.

Today is really all we have. And if we can get through this one day, this one tough day, then tomorrow offers hope for a better day.

One day at a time....

The Way Christy Lane sang it....

One Day at a Time - the song

Here's the chorus of the song I remember from childhood.

One day at a time, sweet Jesus.

That’s all I’m asking from you.

Lord, give me the strength to do everything that I have to do.

Yesterday’s gone, sweet Jesus,

And tomorrow may never be mine.

Lord, help me today,

Show me the way,

One day at a time.

How I Try to Live One Day at a Time

There are a few things I try to do to get through a tough day. First I tell myself, "One day at a time, one day at a time." And I say it several times. Mantras are meant to be repeated. Get that mantra imprinted in your mind.

I might call my mom or a close friend to vent. Writing can often take my mind off my troubles. So does a nap! I sometimes relax with a glass of wine or two. Another choice is taking the dog for a walk. Walking--taking in the fresh air and sunshine--makes both him and me feel better! There are times (probably should be more often) when I say a prayer. And I always, always hope for a better tomorrow. What I have to do is focus. It's one day at a time, I tell myself. One day at a time....

Poem about Taking One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time

I'm home now

and I'm tired.

I look around.

Why such a mess?

Mail on the counter.

Books on the floor.

Dust, hair bunnies.

The litter box needs scooped.

I tell myself

one day at a time

one day at a time

My motto

my mantra

I tell myself most days.

It's a reminder to me

to keep on going

but can I today?

Gizmo reflecting on a beautiful day....

I go to the kitchen.

I put my coffee cup in the dishwasher.

I take out a bag of trash.

Then I sit down

and curse myself

because there is so much to do

and I can't seem to

muster up the will.

One day at a time

but this one day

I haven't done enough.

Not enough to feel good about

what I'm doing

or why I'm here.

My cats are crying.

No food since morning.

Dang, I'm sorry.

I fill their bowls.

They munch away.

It's quiet now.

Turn on the TV

and pet my dog

while the cats return

to jump on the back

of my old couch

or to flop at my feet.

One day at a time

Okay for now

I'll hang for a while

A cat nap now...

one day at a time.

#10/30

Now THIS is one day at a time....

Hahaha! Oh God! Only 10 days? I know what you mean with one day at a time..."Danng!"``~~~~~~ Vicki!

Being positive and accepting our own ways is how we can get ourselves through a long day. Oliver and Katie can be an example... Gizmo does the same: Treats one day at a time even though mommy says: "Geez! This March thingy madness challenge is taking a toll"

Great poetry my friend and thanks for being the way you are

Lord

I can so relate - while I'm not religious I do promote the same attitude:). You can only do what you can do, after that whether you worry about stuff or not - won't change reality. Don't beat yourself up is the message I hear and you're right. We all have things we wish we would have done better...or been smarter...c'est la vie:) lol

My Lord! Yes, only 10 days, now 11. The 30 in 30 is definitely a challenge. March madness is maddening at times. Thanks for the great comments about my pets! And the encouragement. You're quite a cool person the way you are, too. Thanks.

Hi Lynn,

I love your daily mantra. Day by day. That's how it ought to be. We are often too busy and even wishing we could take longer strides than the day can offer. But each day has enough to exhaust us. Good work. keep up with it.

It's easy to cram today too full of tomorrow's "ifs". And to visualize all tomorrows as gray or dark. Every day has its share of problems and solutions, and some problems are solved a little bit at a time. The key?

Don't waste today's opportunities to make the tomorrows better.

I work on this a lot. After all one the day is gone--it is gone. And it will never come back. Some days are just difficult and filled with challenges and annoyances. So when you appreciate the day you appreciate life. Voted up and Share.

It's like breaking a big goal into smaller goals and concentrating on one at a time, finishing it and moving on to the next. Great write and beautiful poem.

We need to keep reminding ourselves this mantra so as not to fall in the vicious circle of either worrying about the future or lamenting about the past, 2 things we have no control over.

Voted up, useful and beautiful. Sharing this hub.

I enjoyed this hub and think the only way to live life is one day at a time. I never accomplish everything I plan for a day but no longer stress about it. I do the important things but make sure I do something for myself every day even if it's reading a book for an hour before the kids come home. That makes each day enjoyable.

Victoria Lynn profile image

Victoria Lynn 4 years ago from Arkansas, USA Author

Thanks, rajan. You're right--we DO need to remind ourselves. Sometimes it's hard. Thanks for voting and sharing this!
