How to set goals in life? Be passionate about it!

Updated on October 16, 2013

Realistic goals!

'Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.' Denis Waitley

Do you have goals in life? Every one has some dreams about life as it is very human to have some expectations about it. But have you achieved your dreams? Or has your dreams stayed as dreams and nothing else?

It is not enough if you have dreams if you have not set a goal to achieve it. Without a goal your life will be aimless as you will meander about without reaching your destination.

What are the common goals everyone has in life?

  • You want fame
  • You want success
  • You want to be rich
  • You want to be acknowledged for your work.

If you notice you will see that the goals you have are general goals everyone in the world has and so does not have the punch needed to make it attainable. Everyone wants to be rich and everyone wants fame. You goal should not be generic, but be specific.

If you want to become rich, ask yourself these questions.

  • What am I doing to become rich?
  • Have a selected the mode to become rich?
  • Is my work good enough to attain my goal?
  • Does the field I have selected have the potential to make me rich?

You should have answers to all these questions if you want to attain your goal of being rich. Without an aim and a goal you cannot have success in life. If you work for monthly salary, how can you achieve your craving to be rich? Your salary is limited and unless you try something new your income will always be limited and inadequate.

If you want all the riches in the world to given to you in a platter, it is never going to happen. Dreams and goals without hard work will never materialize. Unless you work hard towards your aim your goal will be just in your mind and not a reality.

What the ways to achieve your goal?

1. Be realistic

You should not build castles in the air and think you will be successful one day. You should know your limitations and know what you are capable of. The capacity of everyone is limited to a particular field. Roger Federer is a great tennis player and can hope to be victorious only in that field. He cannot become a great cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar as he knows nothing of cricket. It is the same with Sachin; his greatness is limited to cricket.

So you should know what you can do and what you cannot do. I cannot hope to be successful software professional as I know nothing about the technology, but I can be good and possibly a successful writer as writing is my forte.

2. Work towards it

Is it enough if you know your capacity? Everyone has some talent, but it is the selected few who make their talent an open sesame for their affluence and success. Are you interested in doing business? It provides wonderful opportunity for you to become rich. But if you plunge into it without being prepared for it, you will lose money and cannot hope to be successful.

You should work towards it, research about it and know your customers. You should know the pulse of your customers as their mind is very fickle and switches loyalty with ease. So your goal must be to hold on to the customers by your excellent knowledge about your business.

3. Have patience

Do you think your goal can be achieved within days? It can take years before your goal sees any results. This is the reason why many of you give up in the midway. Unless you are prepared to wait and utilize the waiting time in moving ahead you will not succeed.

You want instant success which will never come and instant success always means oncoming failure as you are trapped into a complacent feeling that you are born to be victorious.

4. Relentless hard work

Nothing pays like hard work and nothing is more rewarding when your hard work finally pays off. Most of you shy away from hard work as you do not have the mindset to spend your time working. ‘I want to enjoy life and how can you expect me to be working all the time’. You want wealth but you do not want to work hard for it.

Do you think successful people achieved their success without any input of hard work? Behind their success lie their hard work and the incredible will power to win.

5. Break your goal into segments.

Setting a goal and working towards it can be overwhelming because of the magnitude of work involved. You cannot do everything at the same time. My aim is to earn money through a blog. Since I am very new to computer I did not want to plunge myself into blogging without being prepared for it.

Now I write for hub pages as a preparedness for writing for my blog and it has given me an idea of what writing is all about. I am slowly inching towards my goal and I am writing daily to polish my style and I enjoy my work passionately.

I am in the beginning stage of starting a blog and hopefully it will be live within a month or two. Do you know how long it has taken me to come to this stage? Two whole years! For a computer savvy my long period of gathering knowledge would be funny, but to someone who knew nothing about computer it is an achievement.

6. Love your work

Passion for what you do makes your interest sustained and continuous. Unless you have interest in what you do, you will not enjoy it and unless you enjoy what you are doing you will not continue doing it. If you work is incomplete, how will your goal come true?

7. You should relax

Is your mind keyed up towards your goal? It is very true that you should think and live your goal, but there is nothing to be keyed up about it. When you are keyed up, you become nervous and jittery. You should relax and do your work in a measured way, enjoying each and every moment of it. You should realize that you are walking towards your goal and one day you will achieve it.

8. Appreciate yourself

Be the first to appreciate you. Unless you know your worth you are not going to win. Did you do your work with proficiency today? Congratulate yourself and think you are very good at your work. Give yourself a treat for the good work done. When I feel I have written a good article I watch my favorite movie and thoroughly enjoy myself. I deserved it, didn’t I?

‘Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.’- Thomas Jefferson

It is your mindset which is going to take you towards your goal. Half baked ideas and half hearted attempts will never work for you. Total focus and hundred percent dedication on your part will one day bear the fruits of success which you had yearned for.
